Chapter 5

Penulis: Sweet Pomelo Tea
Less than ten minutes after the statement was published by the Wellington Group, my mom shared the link in our family group chat.

Dad replied with a single word: [Good.]

Claire told the public relations department to pay to get it trending. She wanted to establish Ryan as the family's son as quickly as possible. Meanwhile, Natalie shared a preview of the wedding.

I was the only one who stayed silent. Nobody thought that was strange.

No matter how badly they had treated me in the past, I had always come home for dinner. I kept fixing Claire's project problems and stayed at my parents' side when they were sick.

They were used to it.

"Leon might get angry, but he would never leave."

At dawn, Dad sent me a client handoff form through the family chat: [Finish organizing this in three days. Ryan's taking over the project, so don't hold anything back.]

Claire messaged me right after my dad talked with me: [Come back to the office this afternoon. Ryan doesn't know some of the clients well. Go with him when he meets them.]

Natalie sent me the wedding guest list: [Remove your friends, then redo the seating chart the way Ryan wants it and send it back before eleven.]

I did not reply to any of them.

Soon, my bedroom door swung open.

Mom came in and took the only blanket off my bed. "Ryan was up half the night crying about how hard his mattress is. You'll have to do without this for now."

As she reached the door, she tossed a set of keys onto the bed beside me.

"The alteration for his suit is finished. Pick it up this afternoon. Come home early to cook dinner. Ryan wants your fish fillet with the tangy glaze."

I looked at the keys and said, "He already got his memory back."

Mom paused.

"Does getting his memory back mean he doesn't need to eat? Leon, don't think we don't know what's going through your head. You think we're all siding with Ryan, so you're deliberately giving us a hard time."

She sighed gently, sounding almost patient.

"Once you calm down, you'll understand that only family will always have a place for you."

After she closed the door, I heard Ryan laughing downstairs.

The media were coming to film his first interview since recovering his memory.

Dad had contacted the reporters for him.

Claire had prepared the project documents.

Natalie was driving him there herself.

As they left, Ryan took Mom's arm and smiled. "Will Leon really make glazed fish fillet tonight?"

Mom answered for me. "He's stubborn, but he has never broken a promise to you."

Their car drove out of the courtyard.

Not one of them came upstairs to check on me. Not one of them knew I had already packed my bags. I handed copies of my client documents to my lawyer, Grant Sanders, instead of sending them to Claire.

That was my work. Ryan didn't get to use it to secure his position at the company.

I laid out the access card for the residence, my employee badge, and the keys to the marital house Natalie and I had planned to share. I also placed my engagement ring and the keys for collecting Ryan's suit on the living room's coffee table.

The front door closed quietly behind me. I pulled my suitcase through the courtyard without looking back.

My phone kept ringing on the way to the airport. I switched off all message notifications.

As the plane was taking off along the runway, the lights outside stretched into blurred lines.

When the plane broke through the clouds, every bond to my family sank into the darkness with those distant lights.

The signing ceremony went ahead as scheduled. Beacon Tech had completed every technical test, and Summit Group's Liverian project officially began. Applause filled the venue when the contracts were exchanged. Peter stood beside me. "When I first invited you to join us, I thought I'd have to wait another six months. What made you change your mind so suddenly?" I looked toward the audience. "I finally understood that some places aren't homes, just habits that keep you trapped." Peter handed me the pen for the signing without asking anything else. "Then I'm glad you found your way out." When it was time for the team photograph, I instinctively started moving to the side. My colleagues laughed and pushed me into the center. "Leon, if you're not going to stand in the middle, who is?" The camera flashed. I did not step back again. In the photo, everyone had a relaxed smile on their faces. Nobody needed me to give up my place, and nobody told me that standing in the center m

The day before the signing of the project, Grant arranged for the last of my belongings to be returned. We met in a conference room at a notary's office. They had already been waiting for a long time when I arrived. On the table were an inventory, bank records, and several sealed boxes. Natalie had returned all the money I had contributed to our wedding account and paid for the damage to my books, picture frames, and suit. The signed agreement ending our engagement was placed on top. "I got the deposit back from the hotel meant for the honeymoon, too," she said quietly. "I also bought another suit exactly like the original." "There's no need," I said. I crossed that item off the list. "The suit someone else wore means nothing to me. Neither does a new one." Natalie looked down and said nothing else. Claire pushed the restored watch toward me. Its broken glass had been replaced, and the repaired mechanism was ticking again. It still had its original dial, cracks and all. D

Two months later, I flew back with Summit Group's team. Our new project was ready to launch, and the signing ceremony had been scheduled at the international conference center downtown. However, someone had apparently leaked my itinerary. Before the plane landed, my assistant told me that my family and Natalie were all waiting at the airport's arrivals area. I kept to our planned route and told the team to use the exit for business class passengers. When the doors opened, I saw them at once. Mom held a heavy coat. The weather had just turned cold, and she probably still remembered that I was scared of the cold. Claire held my work notebook. Dad stood at the back, his posture not as straight as it used to be. Natalie carried a bouquet of white roses. They had once been my favorite flowers. She had never remembered that in the three years we were engaged. Now that she did, it was too late. Mom stepped forward. "Leon, it's cold outside." My assistant helped me put on

Ryan did not show much sorrow on the day he was removed from his position. He simply took off his employee badge and knocked everything in his office off to the floor. "Happy now?" Claire stood in the doorway. "Taking credit for someone else's work and misleading the media are both grounds for firing you." "Oh, that sounds so, very noble," Ryan said as he pulled an envelope of documents from his drawer and threw it at Claire's feet. "You think getting rid of me will bring Leon back?" Inside were a notice withdrawing a board appointment and a draft agreement to place company shares in trust. A year after I was reunited with the family, Dad had intended to put me on the board and transfer five percent of the company's shares to me. After the accident, he had withdrawn the appointment and marked those shares for Ryan's trust instead. Dad had signed the documents. Claire's expression changed as she looked up. "Dad said he was only postponing it." Ryan sneered. "He lied to

After all the guests had left, my family remained at the hotel. The jacket was still lying in a heap on the stage. Dad sat in the front row. He suddenly looked so much older now. Mom covered her face. "Ryan was right. We didn't just find out today that he had just recovered his memory." Claire closed her eyes. In the third week after the accident, Ryan had correctly named the floor my office was on. I had only moved to that office after returning to the family. She had known something was wrong even then, but Ryan had cried and said he had only dreamed about it, so she had chosen to believe him. Mom had also noticed long ago how easily he opened the storage cabinet that had been changed during the renovation. And Natalie had known he had recovered at least part of his memory when he recited the new lock code to our house. Dad had seen the doctor's report from Ryan's checkup before the engagement party. It stated that Ryan had no ongoing memory impairment. They had not b

The day originally set for the engagement ceremony arrived. Ryan put on my suit early that morning. His eyes were red from crying. He had the stylist cover it up with makeup and insisted on opening the banquet hall. "The invitations have already gone out, so we can't let everyone laugh at us." By the time Natalie reached the hotel, plenty of guests were already seated. Ryan approached her, adjusting his cuffs. "Natalie, I know you've been upset lately. After the ceremony, we'll go find Leon together. If we all talk to him, I'm sure he'll come home." Natalie looked at the suit. The red wine stains along the bottom had been cleaned off, and the missing buttons had been replaced. But she still remembered me asking her how I looked when I first tried it on. She had been busy replying to work messages and said absent-mindedly, "They're all the same." Now she understood that they were not. With someone else wearing the suit, the ceremony could never be the same. "The ceremony
