Conrad turned me down at once.

"Violet, your father gave his life to save mine. I took you in to repay him, not to use you as a bargaining chip in some marriage deal."

He looked at me the way a father looks at his daughter. "The man in Italy spent five years in exile, and he still came back and seized power. He's more dangerous than you can imagine. Violet, I want you to marry for love, not become a pawn in someone else's power struggle."

I clenched my fists. My chest ached.

I'd always known how much he cared. He wanted me to have choices, so he'd raised the family's most promising boys alongside me, hoping something would grow between us.

But every one of my knights in shining armor had chosen to stand by another woman.

They'd made their choice. I had no reason to stay and wait for any of them.

"Don, I've made up my mind. The Nelson family needs this marriage, and I'm willing to go."

Conrad's expression darkened. He looked close to losing his temper.

"Who told you about this? Eli? Tristan? Christian? All of them? Those boys have completely forgotten their place!"

He was about to call them in and demand answers, but I stopped him. "No one," I said quietly. "I overheard it."

I'd overheard them talk about marrying me off while they comforted Serena.

Conrad sighed. "If anyone gives you a hard time, you come to me. I'll take care of it."

I saw the gray showing in his hair and gave him a guilty smile. "Thank you, Don."

I had kept everything about Serena from him.

If he ever found out they'd all turned on me because of her, the boys who'd been by my side since childhood would face his wrath.

They had once treated me so well that I still couldn't bear to see them punished.

Whenever I wanted afternoon tea at the Ritz, they chartered a private flight to take me there.

I was allergic to pollen, so they tore out every flower on the estate and planted the cedar trees I liked instead.

Whatever I said, they believed me without question and always took my side.

But after Serena arrived, whenever she got upset, they assumed I'd done something wrong. They stopped listening to my side of the story.

Eli said I needed to grow up.

Tristan dragged me over to Serena and made me apologize.

Even when I was in tears over how unfair it was, Christian still blamed me. "You were wrong this time."

Their words weren't especially harsh, but they hurt more than any scolding could.

It wasn't that they protected Serena. What hurt was the way their trust in me faded, little by little, after she arrived.

The people who used to believe me no matter what had taken someone else's side for good. Fine. I didn't want them anymore.

Conrad steered the conversation elsewhere. "I won't agree to this marriage. Violet, you're an adult now. It's time you chose one of the three boys I raised as my sons."

I shook my head and gave a rueful laugh. "I've always thought of them as brothers."

I looked at him, pleading. "Don, after all these years, you're my real father as far as I'm concerned. I want to do this. I promise I'll take care of myself."

He was moved, but he still wouldn't give in. "Don't decide something like this on impulse, Violet. Come see me again in three days."

I nodded, then asked him to keep it from my brothers.

When I left his study, Christian was waiting by the door. A lipstick mark stood out on his cheek.

I stared at it until Christian finally noticed. He had always cared about his appearance, but he didn't get angry. He just smiled fondly. "That's Serena's way of saying thanks. She's always so affectionate."

I forced down the bitterness in my chest and played along. "Right."

That threw him. He knew I had never liked Serena, and he'd been braced for me to make a huge scene.

But he didn't press me. Instead, he took a beautifully carved turquoise pendant from his pocket and handed it to me.

"Happy 18th birthday, Violet!"

He kissed my forehead. "This stone's been blessed. It'll catch any bad luck before it reaches you."

My heart pounded so hard it felt like it might burst out of my chest.

I decided to tell him how I felt, as I'd meant to at my birthday party, even though I was leaving in three days.

But before I could say a word, Christian stopped me cold.

"Violet, in three days you'll have to choose a fiancé. Don't pick me."

He ruffled my hair. His voice was still deep and tender, the voice that always made my heart race. "You've got plenty of people around you. You don't need me. But Serena only has me."

On our wedding anniversary, an anonymous package arrived from New York. When I opened it, I found the turquoise pendant.A small card was tucked inside the box. It read, "I hope you're always happy, with nothing in the world to worry about."Expressionless, I closed the box and dropped it straight into the trash.I'd already decided never to look back. There was no reason to stay tied to anyone from my past.Later, the same unknown number called me three times. The first two times, I ignored it and let it ring until it stopped on its own.The third time, I finally picked up.I didn't pick up because I still had feelings for him. I picked up because it was time to end things between us for good. When the call connected, I heard Christian's drunken voice on the other end. "Violet."He said my name softly, then fell silent. I heard a bottle clink against a glass now and then, and the sound of quiet crying.I didn't say anything. A few minutes later, he spoke again. "Violet, how have you b

I stopped following what happened to them. I had more important things to do.I was sitting in on an internal Moretti family meeting with Vittorio. The elders lined both sides of the long table, and each of them wielded enough influence to shape the family's decisions.Three days earlier, while going through some files, I'd spotted a loophole in a contract Vittorio was reviewing.I pointed out the problem and suggested how to fix it.Vittorio listened. He didn't dismiss me the way everyone else had. He took my analysis seriously.I'd graduated from one of America's top law schools. I had the skills to handle complex legal problems. But back in the Nelson family, the three boys I grew up with had always treated me like a little girl who needed to be protected. They kept me away from power and money, as though my world should hold nothing but jewelry, gowns, and a sheltered life on the estate.Vittorio gave me a completely different choice. He asked me to be his legal counsel. When I hes

"And then another Serena shows up? I'm not some pet that comes running whenever you wave your hand."For a second, Christian stopped breathing."That won't happen, I promise you. I know my own heart now. I only love you, Violet!"I laughed. "If loving me means taking what's mine and giving it to another woman, I don't want your love. There's no room for you in my heart anymore. Whatever we had is over. And you just say you'll take me away, like it's nothing? What about the Nelson family? Is that how you repay the Don for raising you?"I held up my hand to show him my diamond ring. Vittorio and I had spent three days picking out our wedding rings."I'm Violet Moretti now. You should keep your distance."With that, I signaled the driver to go.Not long after the car pulled away, Eli texted, "If anyone ever gives you a hard time, come home to me. I'll always have your back."I didn't reply. I blocked his number too.Christian didn't give up.He kept trying to talk me into abandoning the m

When the helicopter touched down at the estate on Moretti Island, I was so nervous I couldn't stop twisting the hem of my top.Vittorio Moretti was known for his brutality. I doubted life with him would be easy. But the Nelson family's shipping routes across the Atlantic were in trouble, and Conrad needed Vittorio's investment to keep the business afloat.I took a deep breath and reminded myself that Vittorio wanted this marriage too. He was counting on Conrad to help him break into the American market. If anything happened to me, the deal would fall apart, and he'd never let that happen. The moment my eyes met Vittorio's, my heart began to pound harder than ever.He stood before the main doors. His dark overcoat made his shoulders look even broader, and his face was cold and hard. When he looked our way, everyone around him fell silent. The island's morning air was damp and chilly. I'd barely stepped out of the helicopter when the wind made me shiver.Vittorio glanced at me, took off

When Christian found Serena, she was in my room, ordering the staff to fill it with flowers.Someone said quietly, "Ms. Lane is allergic to pollen."Serena was no longer acting timid and helpless, as she always did around him. She lifted her chin. "Of course I know."She snickered. "Even better if Violet goes crying to Christian again. Everybody's on my side anyway. It'll teach her where she stands."Serena turned around, pleased with herself, and came face-to-face with Christian standing in the doorway, his expression dark. Her face went deathly pale."Christian," Serena stammered. "When did you get here? Why didn't you say anything?"Christian looked ready to explode.Around him, Serena had always been so meek and careful. Her teary eyes and vague hints had won his trust and turned him against me.He never imagined it had all been an act. When he finally spoke, his voice was cold enough to make her shake. "Say something? So you could put on that pitiful act for me again?"Serena trie

The next morning, Christian stood in my empty room, holding the breakfast he had made for me himself.Unease crept over him, far too late.He opened our text thread and wrote, "Where are you? I got it wrong yesterday. I'm sorry."Ten minutes passed without a reply. Before, I never would have left one of his messages unanswered for so long.He frowned, pushed down his anxiety, and texted again, "Violet? Stop sulking. If you hadn't been going after Serena all this time, I never would have gotten it wrong."A red exclamation mark appeared beside his message: Not Delivered.Christian gripped his phone tighter, anger rising. He still thought I was throwing a tantrum. When his calls wouldn't go through either, he realized I'd blocked his number too and finally panicked.Eli suddenly burst in. All his usual calm and control were gone. Looking almost feral with rage, he seized Christian by the collar."Violet agreed to marry into the Moretti family! Did you even know?"The words hit Christian
