Prologue

Prologue.

*  Everyone at school thought we were sisters….. *

   Ella's POV.

I got to school that morning, and was surprised at the hateful stares my schoolmates threw at me.

  It was so obvious that some started gossiping and pointing out their fingers at me.

' What's going on? ' I thought.

As it was still 7 am on a Wednesday, which happens to be a sports day in my school.

The morning assembly hadn't commenced yet, which I was very thankful for.

Ignoring the hateful stares, I walked to the School canteen and got myself some donuts and a bottle of milk, that would serve as my breakfast as I was in too much of a hurry to eat earlier.

   I sat down quietly in the not-so-crowded canteen, and ate my breakfast silently.

When I was satisfied, I stood up and was about to head back to class, as it was almost time for the morning assembly.

Staring at my wristwatch, I was alarmed at the number of minutes I had spent, though it wasn't my fault as I got more than enough donuts. 

I had just taken about three steps, when my bun was tugged from behind and before I could comprehend what was going on.

A palm connected with my left cheeks, leaving a sting.

I stood Frozen in shock on realizing that the culprit was none other than my Best friend, Eva.

" Why did you hit me, Eva? " I ended up stuttering out of confusion.

" Really? You still have the guts to ask me that after what you have done, Slut? " her blue eyes were blazing red with unshed tears and rage.

I was completely stunned by this.

  ' What's going on? '

" I don't understand what you are talking about, what happened? "

" Tch, tch, I should have known that you are not only a slut, but also a pretender and a bitch! " Several printed pictures came into view, following her words.

She threw them all at me, with disgust.

By now a little crowd had already gathered around us, but I was too preoccupied to pay much attention to that..

I crouched to pick up the pictures, I became frozen in shock by the images.

    ' No wonder, Eva is so mad at me now. ' My brain felt foggy, staring at the images in front of me.  ‘ How can this be? ’ staring straight at me were pictures of myself being intimate with a guy, who was none other than Eva's crush, whom she was planning to say yes to, today.

I tried to search my memory for how it came to this, but it was blank.

All I remembered was being at a club with Eva the other day. It was our favorite club, due to its serene atmosphere.

It was there, Eva brought up the topic of how her longtime crush, Williams Godwin, asked her out, out of nowhere.

“ What was your response? ” I inquired, taking  sips of my lemonade tea.

“ I haven't given  him one yet. ” Her response surprised me, shouldn't she be super excited that her crush proposed to her at last?

“ Why not? ”

“ I'm worried about our friendship, I don't want anything to come between us. ” I felt my heart aching, realizing just how much she cared about our friendship, even to the extent of sacrificing her own happiness.

‘ What did I do to deserve a best friend like this? ’ I had asked myself.

In the minutes that followed, I implored her to follow her heart, as it knows what's best.

She agreed to do so, after my reassurance that her relationship with him won't affect our friendship.

We were still conversing, when she received an urgent call from her mom, while she left, I stayed behind to enjoy the dance performance that was ongoing.

I ordered another glass of lemonade as the performance continued. I had a few words exchanged with the bartender while he prepared my order.

That was the last thing I knew, before waking up earlier with a slight headache. Not thinking too much, I had taken a painkiller after downing a glass of warm milk, which I took with a small pack of biscuits.

‘ So, how did all of this happen? ’

“ What are you thinking about now, Ella? ” Eva's words interrupted my thoughts, I stared up at her and wasn't surprised to see her still red eyes staring hatefully at me. “  Never would I have expected you of all people to betray me. What have I ever done to deserve this? ” I stayed silent as the intensity of her words hit me. “  If I had offended you, you should have told me and I would have apologized sincerely and even kowtowed if an apology is not enough. ”  She paused, taking a sharp breath as tears streamed down her face.

I felt like my heart was being pricked by a thousand needles.

" Why did you do this to me, Ella? Do I deserve this? For the first time,  I wanted to enter a relationship, but what did you do? You betrayed me, Ella! How could you?  Don't you have a heart at all? You claimed that you see me as your other half, but is this how to treat your other half? ” I guess my silence aggravated her as her voice rose by a few decibels. “ Answer Me, Ella! Don't act dumb! ”

" I... I am sorry, Ella, I don't know anything about this, I—  "

" You don't? ” She interrupted my words before I could complete them, “ How could you still deny when all the evidence is right in front of us? Do you want to deny the fact that you were being intimate with my crush in the club? Was that why you didn't want to leave the clubhouse earlier and stayed behind? Is this what you have been planning all along? Tell me Ella!Speak up! "

" Please Trust me, Eva. I don't know anything about this.  Please, believe me, Eva. " I pleaded, my face already tear-stained, but I couldn't care less about my looks now.

" Believe you? Do you have proof? " She asked.

" I don't, but Steva do you think, I could do something as cruel as this to you? What do you think I'll gain from it? We've been through a lot together, and I never betrayed you so why would I now?  You have to believe me, Eva.  I don't know anything about this, I am innocent! " I advanced towards her, but she took several steps backwards. I paused, clenching my fists. ‘ Why did it have to come this way? ’

" I don't believe you, Ella. ” She paused, giving a maniacal laugh. “ Who would have thought that one day, you'll betray my trust all because of a guy. I always thought you were innocent, who would have thought that you are nothing, but a wolf in sheep's clothing. I would never have realized that I was best friends with a slut, if this hadn't happened.  ”  Her words were like fiery knives stabbing into the depth of my heart.

I had never felt so insulted in my entire life, my eyes saw red as my palm acted on impulse and connected with her right cheeks.

The area turned red immediately, flinching in pain, she stared at my outstretched hand with pain in her orbs.

" I never knew that a day would come that you'll raise your hand at me after betraying me, Ella. " Her words came out with utter disgust.

" I... I am innocent. " I insisted.

" Innocent, Do you think I'll believe you after this? ” She gave a maniacal laugh. “  Besides, who gave you the right to slap me, you crazy bitch? ” Before I could react, her palm was raised to hit me, but I reacted at impulse and held it.

She struggled to get her hand out of my hold, but failed and when I finally released her hands.

   She pushed me to the ground and I fell, but not before dragging her down with me and soon we got physical, pulling at each other's hair and slapping each other's faces.

" Two of you! To the Principal's office, now! " An authoritative voice brought us out of our reverie and by the time realization dawned on us it was too late.
