Chapter 2

Author: Nameless
Cindy brushed her hand across my cheek and said, "Don't worry. I'll keep you alive."

Her mentor had performed heart transplants before, so she was confident that she could pull this off. "Once Tristan recovers, your whole family will finally accept you. And I'll be right there with you."

She and her colleagues worked through the surgery with focused precision. After a long time, Cindy removed a heart from my body. She didn't even stop to look at it before rushing it into Tristan's operating room.

My chest was still open, my body lying alone on the operating table. The shrill flatline from the monitor woke the doctor left on watch.

"He's dead? I thought he had two hearts."

One of Cindy's colleagues couldn't make sense of it.

"You actually believed Dr. Green when she said that?" Kelly Thompson answered.

"Good riddance. He did so many awful things and wouldn't lift a finger to save Dr. Green's husband. On top of that, he tried to make a move on her."

"So what do we do now?"

"He's dead. Wait for someone to come collect the body. If nobody claims him, let the morgue deal with it," Kelly added.

And with that, every doctor in the room walked out.

Cindy was fully focused on Tristan's surgery. Even though she was confident, this was her first time performing a heart transplant on her own. But after several hours, she successfully finished the procedure.

When it was done, she followed Tristan back to his room. It wasn't until he was settled in that she remembered me. She was about to head back to the operating room when she ran into a colleague who'd assisted her in the hallway.

"Where's my husband?"

The colleague thought for a moment. "He's already in the room, isn't he? Don't worry. There's always someone keeping an eye on post-op patients. The nurses on the floor will take care of him."

Cindy didn't realize that something about the answer didn't add up. She figured her colleague was right. With her working here, the nurses would at least keep an eye on things. So she went back to her office and got back to work.

A day later, Tristan woke up. Cindy was at his bedside.

"Tristan, you're finally awake."

The moment he saw her, he broke down crying. Cindy pulled him into a hug. "It's okay. The surgery went well. Your heart won't give you any more trouble."

Tristan pressed his hand against his chest. Knowing the disease that had plagued him for years was finally gone, he clung to Cindy and sobbed. She told him to calm down, that he couldn't let his emotions spike like this, and rubbed his back to soothe him.

One of the nurses on the floor saw them and teased him. "Dr. Green really does take good care of her husband."

Cindy froze when she heard that. She thought of me, still in another room down the hall, and started to explain. "Oh, you've got it wrong. He's not my—"

But Tristan clutched his chest at just the right moment, cutting her off. Cindy had no choice but to pat his back instead.

"I told you to stop crying. All you need to do right now is rest so you can recover."

Something about seeing him like that made her suddenly think of me. She realized that she hadn't seen me at all since the surgery.

"Tristan, get some rest. I'm going to go check on Hayden."

She started to stand, but Tristan grabbed her hand and said, "I had this surgery behind our parents' backs, and right now is the most critical part of recovery. I don't have anyone here with me, and I'm worried I won't heal properly."

He looked so pale that Cindy's resolve softened. She figured that the doctors and nurses on the floor would look after me, if only as a courtesy to her, so she let it go.

Tristan continued to wail, "I can't believe how horrible Hayden is! All I did was take one of his hearts! Why did he come up with these fake messages to trick you when he's perfectly fine?"Mom couldn't stand listening to him any longer. She walked over and slapped him hard across the face.He couldn't believe she'd just hit him."Did you just hit me because of Hayden? But why? What's so good about him? He's just some worthless bastard that doesn't even have a family who wants him!" Tristan screamed, his tone nastier than his words.Cindy couldn't hold back either. She seized Tristan by the throat with both hands, shrieking, "And who do you think you are, huh? Do you seriously think I wanted Hayden to donate his heart to you because I cared about you? Do you think I'd even feel like talking to you if it hadn't been for his heart?"She had a strange feeling when she first met Tristan, one that she couldn't put into words. It was as if just the sight of him gave her the urge to subm

Tristan had stolen my parents from me, and then he stole Cindy, too. Perhaps I was never meant to exist in this world.Cindy returned to Tristan's hospital room with my phone in her hand. There were questions she needed him to answer. From the moment he woke up, he noticed the pensive, tormented looks on Mom's and Dad's faces. When they saw that he'd regained consciousness, they didn't immediately crowd in to fuss over him. They simply sat to the side and sighed.Tristan turned to Margaret, who also remained silent. He started to wonder if I'd suddenly popped out of nowhere and said something to them. But he quickly dismissed that possibility. He was certain that if I'd shown up, Mom and Dad would force me to apologize to him for disappearing for days without coming to see him. Moreover, Uncle Brian and Aunt Edna were still standing outside the hospital room. He knew that they wouldn't leave until they got the money. He was still trying to figure out the situation when Cindy ente

Kelly's heart settled back in place when she saw that it was Cindy who had come barreling in."What are you doing here? Aren't you supposed to be accompanying your husband?" Kelly asked.Ignoring the question, Cindy stormed up to Kelly and grabbed her, questioning, "Were you the one who signed off on releasing the patient in Bed 8?"The moment Kelly realized Cindy was talking about me, she remembered everything Tristan had said about me. She scrunched her nose in disdain before replying, "What about it? He's dead, so isn't it a given that his body should be released?" She kept talking while Cindy stared at her in horror."Weren't you the one who did the surgery? He stopped breathing the moment you stepped away from the operating table."Cindy slowly released her grip on Kelly, repeatedly shaking her head. "No. You're lying to me. That's not what happened!"Thinking that Cindy was simply remorseful over my death, Kelly tried to comfort her."Don't feel bad about it. Your husban

The rest of the hospital staff snapped into action, swiftly ushering everyone else out of the hospital room. Standing outside the door, Cindy kept her eyes locked on Uncle Brian and Aunt Edna.Although my parents were concerned about Tristan's condition, there was something even more important to get to the bottom of first.Uncle Brian and Aunt Edna frantically racked their brains for a way to explain away this situation. Then, without warning, Margaret dropped to her knees before my parents."Gary, Janice, I'm so sorry. I've done a great harm to your family."Everything had happened so fast that Cindy hadn't even wrapped her head around it all. She stepped forward to try to help Margaret back onto her feet, only for Margaret to launch into a recount of the past.Cindy listened as Margaret explained that when Cindy was a child, she had a weak heart. The family had to find a heart donor for her, and by chance, they found me.They had paid Uncle Brian and Aunt Edna a large sum of m

The hospital staff were puzzled. As far as they knew, Cindy's husband was the patient in Bed 32 who had just undergone heart surgery."My husband has already been discharged. He was in Bed 8," Cindy declared.Upon hearing that, one of the doctors dropped the medical chart in his hands. It hit the floor with a loud clatter. Dr. Roth shot that doctor a look of displeasure, and the latter hastily picked it up again.Just as the atmosphere turned a little awkward, the door opened. My parents walked in, followed by Uncle Brian and Aunt Edna.Seeing a room full of doctors, they assumed that these people had come to check on Tristan's condition. Mom and Dad hurried forward at once."Doctor, how's my son doing?"Aunt Edna followed closely behind. She'd come over to the hospital to ask me for money. She'd camped outside my house for several days without catching sight of me, so she had no choice but to call Mom and Dad. When she heard that Tristan had undergone heart surgery, she and Uncl

Cindy froze. "What surgery are you talking about, Dr. Langston?"Dr. Langston hadn't expected that reaction from her. He said, "The heart transplant. The one you had when you were a young girl."The office went quiet for a moment before someone burst in. "Dr. Green, you need to come quick. There's a fight in Bed 32."Tristan was in Bed 32, so Cindy took off running when she heard that. She could hear the shouting before she even made it through the door."Don't you dare deny it. My nephew donated a heart to your daughter."Cindy rushed in and pulled the two people apart. When Margaret Fields saw her daughter, her eyes immediately welled up with tears. The other woman, the one who'd been pulled away, spotted Cindy and started yelling again."It's you. My nephew Hayden's heart is inside you."Cindy stared at the woman in disbelief, and she suddenly recalled my words."What's going on here?"My parents had just walked into the room and found Aunt Edna screaming at Cindy.
