Chapter 2

Autor: Perfect Timing
My in-laws were visibly taken aback by my question.

A moment later, they forced casual smiles and tried to smooth things over.

"Oh, it's nothing. Herman probably stepped out to pick something up. He should be back soon. You've been away on business for so long. You must be exhausted. Go put your luggage in the bedroom and get some rest."

Just like in my previous life, they had no idea what was actually happening inside the bedroom.

They simply assumed their son was preparing a surprise and played along, waiting for me to open the door and receive it.

But I didn't dare take the risk.

I could practically see Emily hiding behind the door, a knife clenched in her hand, waiting for the moment I stepped inside so she could drive it straight through my heart.

"No rush. I'll put my luggage away later. I want to rest for a bit first."

As I spoke, I left my suitcase where it was and turned toward the couch.

My in-laws hurried after me.

"Oh, come on. How long does it take to put away a suitcase? You should get everything settled first."

The floating comments scrolled across my vision.

[These two clueless old fools are making things worse. They have no idea you'll die the second you walk in there!]

[Just stall for time. Every second counts. Find a chance to get out of there!]

The baby's voice sounded tearful.

[Mommy, are you really going to believe those comments? Daddy's lying unconscious on the floor right now. It's so cold. He'll freeze to death!]

This time, I trusted neither side.

"Mom, Dad, I'm really tired. The luggage can wait," I insisted.

My in-laws saw how firm I was. They worried that any further urging might spoil Herman's surprise, so they reluctantly fell silent and sat down with me on the couch

At that moment, I noticed a bag of candy on the coffee table and froze.

"Who bought this? You two can't have sweets because of your blood sugar, and neither Herman nor I like sugary things."

My father-in-law sighed.

"Herman asked us to get it. His blood sugar dropped while he was changing a lightbulb last time, and he nearly passed out. The doctor told us to keep candy around the house from now on."

The baby immediately seized the opportunity.

[Mommy, did you hear that? I wasn't lying. Daddy really does have low blood sugar. He's in danger right now! Have you forgotten how much Daddy has loved you all these years?]

The floating comments fired back at once.

[Don't let them fool you! Even if he has low blood sugar, he wouldn't just pass out. We saw everything clearly. Emily's in the room, and Herman is sitting on the bed!]

[The baby inside you doesn't know anything. He's making it all up!]

The voices in my head grew louder and louder, nearly tearing my sanity apart.

I pressed hard against my throbbing temples.

Something wasn't right...

This wasn't right at all.

Herman had always been attentive and caring toward me, and Emily absolutely hated him.

I remembered it clearly.

One time, Herman accidentally brushed against Emily's handbag.

Emily's expression changed instantly.

Although she forced herself not to make a scene, I saw with my own eyes how she turned around and threw the bag straight into the trash afterward.

With a personality like hers, how could she possibly have an affair with Herman?

Besides, Herman had always been shy and reserved.

Other than me, he could barely hold a conversation with another woman.

Cheating was the last thing I would ever associate with him.

But the floating comments sounded so certain, and the baby was crying so desperately...

Who was telling the truth?

"Cindy, why do you look so pale?" my mother-in-law asked with concern, pulling me back to reality.

I forced a smile.

"I'm fine. Just a little tired. I'm going to use the bathroom."

After entering the bathroom, I turned on the faucet and splashed cold water across my face several times.

The icy droplets ran down my cheeks, clearing some of the fog from my mind.

Just as I lifted my head and reached for a towel, something caught the corner of my eye.

A familiar shirt was sticking out of the laundry hamper.

It was one of Herman's favorites.

A sudden sense of dread washed over me.

My hands trembled as I pulled the shirt out.

A bright red lipstick mark stood out on the chest of the shirt.

I recognized the color and texture immediately.

It was Emily's favorite lipstick.

Some internet users even dug up the company where I worked. The office phone was flooded with calls, and my boss tactfully suggested that I "take some time off."People even began waiting outside the apartment building where I was temporarily staying, holding signs that read "Murderer."My phone rang.My father-in-law's name flashed across the screen. The moment I answered, my mother-in-law's hysterical voice exploded through the speaker."Cindy! You must walk away with nothing! Not a single dollar of Herman's money belongs to you!"The floating comments raced across my vision.[Have these two completely lost their minds? Their son cheated, and they're still acting this self-righteous?][Don't be afraid, Cindy. The law is on your side!][Herman brought this on himself. How do they still have the nerve to demand money?]The baby's gentle voice drifted into my mind.[Mommy, don't listen to them.]Just as I was about to respond, my father-in-law grabbed the phone."If you take even a cent

After giving my statement at the police station, the officers repeatedly questioned me."How did you know Herman Cooperhad been murdered? Most people would have gone straight to the bedroom when they got home, wouldn't they?"The floating comments immediately joined in.[Yeah, seriously. How did you figure it out?][Exactly! Even we didn't see the truth. We almost got you killed!]The baby's voice was equally curious.[Mommy, how did you know something had happened to Daddy?]I lowered my eyes.I didn't mention the floating comments or the baby's thoughts."I smelled blood. Call it intuition."The police eventually uncovered the truth.Herman was having an affair with a woman named Lena Hart. When Lena became pregnant, fear got the better of him, and he pushed her down a flight of stairs, causing her to lose the baby.Consumed by hatred, Lena secretly entered the house while Herman was preparing his surprise and took her revenge. The moment I heard the name "Lena Hart," my heart skippe

The bedroom door swung all the way open.A woman covered in blood stood in the shadows, a bloodstained knife still clutched in her hand.My in-laws gasped in horror.Emily let out a startled cry as well.Through the gap behind the woman, Herman could be seen sitting on the bed.A strange smile hung on his face as he stared straight at us."Herman, what are you doing?!" my in-laws shouted in panic. They tried to rush into the room, but I stopped them."Don't go over there."My voice trembled."He's already dead."The floating comments exploded across my vision.[Yeah. His pupils are completely dilated. He's been dead for a while.][Oh my God, is this woman a psychopath?]Herman had been dead for a long time.In my previous life, I saw him exactly like this.He was dead with his eyes open and that eerie smile frozen on his face. The woman licked the blood from the tip of her knife and smiled darkly."Smart girl. That's right. I killed him. But you should be thanking me."The baby cried i

The baby screamed in terror inside my womb, but the searing pain I expected never came.Instead, Emily lightly punched me in the chest and laughed."You came back without telling me? And you didn't even reply to my messages!"The floating comments froze instantly.[What the hell is going on? Wasn't Emily supposed to have a knife?][Wasn't she in the bedroom?][Exactly! How did she get out here? Did she climb out a window or something?]There was no way she could have climbed out a window. We lived on the twelfth floor. And from beginning to end, the woman inside the bedroom could never have been Emily. In my previous life, I never got a clear look at the woman who stabbed me.The comments told me it was Emily, and I simply accepted it without question. The baby shouted excitedly.[I knew it! Daddy would never cheat!]My in-laws hurried over."Emily, thank goodness you're here. Talk some sense into Cindy. She started causing a scene the moment she got home."Emily looked at me in confus

The baby's voice was thick with tears.[Mommy, if you'd opened the door sooner, Daddy wouldn't be in danger right now...]The floating comments immediately fired back.[Shut up! Your grandparents aren't the dangerous ones. Emily is!]I snapped, "Understanding? What exactly am I supposed to understand? That he's in there cheating on me?"With a cold laugh, I continued, "When I went to the bathroom just now, did that woman sneak out? And now you're trying to get me into the room so she can slip out through the back door later, is that it?"The floating comments instantly erupted in approval.[Smart! That's exactly what you should say!][Whatever you do, don't go in there! Under no circumstances should you be the one opening that door!]The baby was crying so hard he could barely speak.[Mommy, this won't work! If they realize you're playing with them, things will end very badly!]My in-laws' faces turned ashen. My father-in-law barked angrily, "What nonsense are you talking about? What w

My heart sank.[See? That lipstick mark is all the proof you need. Those two have been sleeping together for a long time!][What a scumbag! Run! Divorce him! Why keep a man like that around?][And that little liar in your belly? Get rid of him too! He's been defending that cheating jerk the whole time!]The floating comments flooded my vision like they had gone insane. Every word dripped with malice, stabbing straight into my heart.[Mommy... that's impossible... Daddy would never...]The baby's tearful voice argued back in broken fragments.I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.None of the arguments and explanations seemed to matter anymore. The evidence was right in front of me.The lipstick mark on that shirt unquestionably belonged to Emily. All my thoughts felt like a joke in the face of that lipstick stain.Expressionless, I opened the bathroom door and returned to the couch."What's wrong, Cindy? You look awful," my mother-in-law asked, noticing something was off.I slumped o
