Chapter 4

Author: Perfect Timing
The baby's voice was thick with tears.

[Mommy, if you'd opened the door sooner, Daddy wouldn't be in danger right now...]

The floating comments immediately fired back.

[Shut up! Your grandparents aren't the dangerous ones. Emily is!]

I snapped, "Understanding? What exactly am I supposed to understand? That he's in there cheating on me?"

With a cold laugh, I continued, "When I went to the bathroom just now, did that woman sneak out? And now you're trying to get me into the room so she can slip out through the back door later, is that it?"

The floating comments instantly erupted in approval.

[Smart! That's exactly what you should say!]

[Whatever you do, don't go in there! Under no circumstances should you be the one opening that door!]

The baby was crying so hard he could barely speak.

[Mommy, this won't work! If they realize you're playing with them, things will end very badly!]

My in-laws' faces turned ashen.

My father-in-law barked angrily, "What nonsense are you talking about? What woman? Have you worked yourself into a state?"

Just then, my eyes caught the shadow beneath the gap under the bedroom door.

Someone was standing behind it.

Almost at the same moment, my mother-in-law reached for the doorknob.

Alarm bells went off in my head.

I lunged forward and shoved her away.

Caught completely off guard, she fell to the floor.

My father-in-law rushed to help her up, cursing under his breath.

The floating comments panicked.

[What are you doing? Let the old woman open it! Then you can run!]

[Exactly! Why are you acting like some saint now? For all you know, they're all in this together!]

Something wasn't right...

In my previous life, the moment I opened the door, a knife pierced my heart.

That woman hadn't cared who opened the door.

She attacked indiscriminately.

And Herman had been sitting on the bed, watching it all happen with that mocking look in his eyes...

As I was piecing everything together, two loud knocks suddenly came from the front door.

Bang. Bang.

"What the hell has gotten into you?"

My father-in-law helped my mother-in-law to her feet.

His face was dark with anger as he pointed a finger at me.

"Everything was fine, and you just had to start making wild accusations."

The floating comments continued scrolling frantically.

[Someone's knocking at the door now? Who could that be?]

[Don't scare me like this!]

My heart tightened.

I stepped over and looked through the peephole.

The person standing outside was Emily.

I stumbled back two steps in shock.

The baby's voice instantly filled with joy.

[Mommy, look! I told you Emily wasn't inside! They're lying! They're all lying!]

My mind went blank.

If Emily was standing outside the front door, then the person behind the bedroom door...

Could it really be Herman?

The floating comments continued arguing desperately.

[Impossible! Herman is on the bed.]

[Emily must have climbed out the window! She's working with Herman to trap you from both sides! Grab a knife and run!]

"Who is it?" my in-laws called from behind me.

Suddenly, I remembered the woman who stabbed me through the heart in my previous life.

And Herman sitting on the bed with that strange smile on his face...

A terrifying thought surfaced in my mind.

I twisted the doorknob and yanked the door open.

The floating comments exploded instantly.

[Don't open it! Run!]

The moment the door swung open, I saw Emily's raised hand.

It drove straight toward my chest.

How do they still have the nerve to demand money?]The baby's gentle voice drifted into my mind.[Mommy, don't listen to them.]Just as I was about to respond, my father-in-law grabbed the phone."If you take even a cent

After giving my statement at the police station, the officers repeatedly questioned me."How did you know Herman Cooperhad been murdered? Most people would have gone straight to the bedroom when they got home, wouldn't they?"The floating comments immediately joined in.[Yeah, seriously. How did you figure it out?][Exactly! Even we didn't see the truth. We almost got you killed!]The baby's voice was equally curious.[Mommy, how did you know something had happened to Daddy?]I lowered my eyes.I didn't mention the floating comments or the baby's thoughts."I smelled blood. Call it intuition."The police eventually uncovered the truth.Herman was having an affair with a woman named Lena Hart. When Lena became pregnant, fear got the better of him, and he pushed her down a flight of stairs, causing her to lose the baby.Consumed by hatred, Lena secretly entered the house while Herman was preparing his surprise and took her revenge. The moment I heard the name "Lena Hart," my heart skippe
