Chapter 2

Author: Honey Potato
I would always be grateful to Christopher. If it hadn't been for him, I would've died in that river back then.

I never would have escaped that remote town, never would have made it into a top university, or become someone Mr. Sterling truly valued.

But I'd also spent years feeling guilty. If he hadn't saved me, he never would've ended up frail and walking with a permanent limp.

His hatred and resentment toward me suddenly seemed completely justified.

"Marvin, everyone thinks you're so smart and lucky. But I think you're just an idiot."

Christopher threw me onto the hotel bed, patted my cheek, and sneered. "You were always the perfect kid. My parents were always comparing me to you.

"I hated you. That's why I shoved you into the river. I didn't pull you out until I saw your parents running over.

"After that, your whole family treated me like a hero. Even my own parents finally looked at me differently."

He continued, "I faked that limp for 20 years, and during that time, you bent over backward for me without ever questioning it. Every time I saw the guilt in your eyes, I could barely stop myself from laughing."

I ground my teeth, but I couldn't move a muscle.

So, that was it. For two decades, I'd treated my worst enemy as my closest friend.

"Tomorrow's your wedding day. As your best friend, I've got a special gift waiting for you," Christopher said.

He spent a while searching for my phone but couldn't find it. In the end, he clicked his tongue in annoyance.

At that moment, the door opened. I couldn't move a single limb.

Everything my wedding ring had warned me about was unfolding before my eyes.

"Chris," someone called out.

I used every ounce of strength I had to pry my eyes open. A woman in silk sleepwear stepped inside and nestled against Christopher's chest.

My breath hitched.

It was Annabelle, my fiancee, who had always kept me at arm's length and spoke to me with nothing but cold indifference.

I watched as Christopher slipped an arm around her waist.

"Chris, do you like this set?" Annabelle asked, her voice dripping with sweetness.

So, those revealing sleepwear photos I'd caught a glimpse of on his phone earlier had come from her.

"I love it."

Christopher pulled Annabelle onto his lap and sat beside me. They were so close that I could feel the warmth coming off them.

"Wait… Will he wake up?"

"The bed could cave in, and he wouldn't even stir."

Christopher kissed Annabelle hard and added, "Come on, sweetheart. You know my leg. I'll need you to do the work."

The two of them carried on right beside me.

A metallic taste rose in my mouth. If my wedding ring hadn't warned me, I'd have spent the rest of my life feeling guilty for them.

Then, Annabelle spoke. "Once my dad loses all faith in him tomorrow, I'll fake a mental breakdown and get myself hospitalized.

"A few months later, when my belly starts to show, you propose. Then we can finally be together for real."

She continued talking through their plans for the future, while Christopher smiled smugly.

"I was the one who met you first. Your dad's so old-fashioned. He just picked some guy and expected you to marry him. If he really loved you, he never would've done that."

Meanwhile, I stared blankly at them, tangled up in each other.

A few minutes later, Christopher helped Annabelle get dressed, then said, "The people I called are here. Let's go to your room."

"But my dad's home."

"Isn't that what makes it more exciting?"

Just like that, they walked away, chatting and laughing.

Moments later, the door opened again, and a blend of perfumes drifted into the room.

Then, someone ripped my shirt open, sending the buttons flying.

I stared at the ceiling and swore inwardly, "Christopher and Annabelle, you'd better pray I don't survive tonight. Because if I do, I'll destroy you both."

I immediately took my parents to the best hospital in the city for a full checkup after the farce ended. I finally breathed a sigh of relief after learning that their health was fine aside from slight blood pressure fluctuations.I wanted to buy a bigger house in the city and have my parents move in with me, hoping that they could enjoy a more comfortable life here. They, however, stayed for only a few days before insisting on returning to our hometown in the countryside because they felt out of place. Dad simply smiled and said, "Your mom and I don't feel comfortable staying in the city. We're much better off back home with our vegetable garden and our modest fields." I didn't press them to stay. I spent the remaining days showing them around the city's top attractions instead. I personally drove them back to the familiar remote town in the countryside after buying plenty of health supplements and local delicacies for them to take home.My career took off the moment I returned t

In that instant, the scene descended into chaos. James' expression turned grim as he immediately ordered the bodyguards to restore order before sending the blood-covered Annabelle to the hospital. In the meantime, the police officers stepped forward and handcuffed Christopher. He was covered in blood and in a terrible state, but he still refused to accept defeat. He gritted his teeth as he walked past me and hissed, "You'd better not think you've won, Marvin! I was the first person to see Mr. Sterling fall into the river back then. "If I hadn't hesitated, I would have been the one who saved him. I would have been the one who rose to success! You took everything from me, Marvin!"I found him utterly pathetic as I looked at his shameless, unapologetic face. "You didn't hesitate back then, Christopher."I coldly called out his lie, saying, "You saw that Mr. Sterling was stuck in that car back then and that the current was strong. You didn't want to deal with it and were terrified of

Christopher almost fell to the ground as his legs gave out, but he refused to back down. "You don't get to pretend that you're the victim here, Marvin! It doesn't matter if the video is real! "What about the 30 million dollars you still owe the debt collectors? It's clearly written in the loan agreement! You're nothing but a scumbag, Marvin!""You actually have the nerve to mention that 30 million dollars, huh?" I asked with a sneer before I took out a thick stack of investigation documents and threw them right at his face. "I hired someone to look into your background from the last few years as soon as I sobered up last night. Did you really think you left no evidence behind, Christopher?"Among the scattered documents were his gambling transaction records from overseas gambling platforms.I then turned to the crowd and said in a firm, steady voice, "Christopher became a degenerate gambler long ago! He completely gambled away all the savings I lent him over the years for his st

"Dad!" I exclaimed as I caught him before he hit the ground. Mom screamed and rushed over, tears streaming down her face as she shook Dad's shoulders.I instantly felt my blood run cold at that moment. In that same instant, the giant screen lit up, and instead of playing the footage that was meant to expose my "crimes", it played a recording filled with explicit moans and flirtatious voices."Chris, do you like this set?""I love it… Come on, sweetheart. You know my condition. I'll need you to do all the work."In that instant, everyone fell silent, and only the shameless conversation between Annabelle and Christopher on the screen echoed through the ballroom."Once my dad loses all faith in him tomorrow, I'll fake a mental breakdown and get myself hospitalized. A few months later, when my belly starts to show, you propose. Then we can finally be together for real.""Turn it off! Turn it off!" Annabelle's proud expression disappeared in an instant, her face turning pale. She scr

The man held the loan agreement high for everyone to see. There, in black and white, was my name listed as the borrower, complete with my signature and fingerprint. My head snapped toward Christopher. I had hidden my phone, but clearly, he'd planned for that too. He'd already found another way to saddle me with millions of dollars in debt. The guests immediately broke into an uproar. "Wait, what's going on?" someone asked. "The Sterlings' future son-in-law owes 30 million dollars?""So, saving Mr. Sterling back then was just a calculated move? And marrying Annabelle was all about getting the family fortune, wasn't it?"Another commented, "Marvin always seemed like such a decent guy. Who could've guessed he was a scumbag? 30 million dollars… What did he spend it on? Don't tell me he blew it gambling.""Oh, that's not even the worst of it. I overheard the bridesmaids this morning saying he supposedly…"Just then, the debt collectors stepped in front of me. I shook my head. "

By the time I could move again, the sun was already shining brightly outside. Underwear was scattered across the room, and the air reeked of a sickening stench.Yet, I didn't have time to worry about the mess. I quickly found my phone and called the wedding planner. "Cancel the wedding now!"The wedding planner replied, "I'm sorry, Mr. Shaw, but Ms. Sterling specifically instructed us yesterday not to make any changes to the wedding arrangements."I checked the time. I'd barely stepped away from the bed when the door burst open. "Marvin, the groomsmen are already waiting at the hall. You're the groom, and you're the one who's late. What the hell are you doing?" As Christopher spoke, he looked around the room in apparent shock. "Have you lost your mind? How could you do something like this the night before your wedding?"He hurried over to the bed, looking every bit the disappointed friend. If I hadn't seen what happened the night before, I'd never have believed he could put o
