Chapter 2

Author: Shiyu
As soon as she finished speaking, tears started streaming down Clarine's cheeks.

Right away, all three of them were fussing over her.

My mother hurried over, pulled Clarine into her arms, and gently patted her back to soothe her.

My father frowned. "Theona, stop sulking. Be the bigger person. You're our only biological daughter. Everything we have will be yours one day. Your sister just wants one trip. That's all she's asking for."

Was that really all she wanted? Then why had she taken everything from me?

My father never gave me a cent in allowance, yet he'd bought Clarine several cars.

My mother said Clarine was her daughter too, and she wouldn't neglect her just because I'd come home. Instead, she showered Clarine with even more love and attention.

For every dress my mother bought me, she bought ten for Clarine so she wouldn't feel left out. When Clarine said she liked a doll I'd bought with my scholarship money, my mother simply took it from me and gave it to her. She always remembered Clarine's favorite foods, yet somehow forgot that both of us were allergic to pineapple.

Clarine sniffled. "Mom, Dad, it's okay. I really don't mind. But Wrangel Island is so far away. What if something happens to Theona when she's there all alone?"

Loic reached over and wiped the tears from Clarine's face as if it were the most natural thing in the world. "Don't worry. Theona's been through plenty since she was a kid. She knows how to take care of herself. But you've always had people looking after you. How could we let you go somewhere like that alone?"

A place like that.

Every word of it dripped with contempt.

How ironic. They knew perfectly well how remote Wrangel Island was. They knew something could happen to me out there, yet they'd still ganged up on me and rigged the draw.

All because they wanted to give Clarine a trip of her own. All because they were afraid I'd embarrass them.

Humiliation and disappointment washed over me. I couldn't stay there any longer. If I did, I'd burst into tears.

I took a step toward my room.

Loic tensed up. He moved in front of Clarine and watched me warily. "Theona, what do you think you're doing?"

I looked at the man I was supposed to marry in a few months and felt completely let down.

"Relax, Loic. I'm only going to my room to pack." I laughed, mostly at myself.

What they didn't know was that I wouldn't be making this trip alone.

My advisor, Dr. Ellen Marsh, was leading a team to Wrangel Island in the High Arctic to film a documentary on polar bears. She'd invited me to join them.

This was an exceptionally rare polar research expedition. My name would go down in the field's history.

I'd turned her down twice because I wanted to go to Hawaii with my family. I'd even considered walking away from the research I loved just to stay close to them.

But there was no point in telling them any of that now.

I could live without a graduation trip. I could live without my family and the man I loved by my side. I still had work I loved and a future of my own.

When Loic realized I was only going to pack, he finally stepped aside.

But just as I headed for my room, my mother stopped me. "Theona, your sister had an eczema flare-up recently, and her doctor said she needed more sunlight. Your room gets the most sun, so we let her move in there for now."

With graduation coming up, I'd been so busy with the work Ellen had given me that I'd practically been living at the lab.

I had no idea my room had already been handed over to someone else.

"Your sister has so many clothes and bags that we turned her bedroom into a walk-in closet." My mother looked a little uncomfortable.

"What about me? Where's my room?" My voice came out low and flat.

My father actually pointed to the shabby, damp storage room outside.

I went over and opened the door. My things had been thrown together in a messy heap.

The teddy bear my adoptive mom had sewn for me more than ten years ago had been tossed onto the floor, covered in dust.

I picked it up, brushed off the dust, and suddenly thought of my room back at my adoptive parents' house.

Their house wasn't big, but they'd given me the biggest, brightest room. They'd filled it with my favorite flowers and toys my adoptive mom had sewn by hand. I was afraid of the dark, so she'd kept making me little toys to keep me company at night.

An aching sadness welled up in my chest, and before I could stop myself, tears began to fall.

When Loic saw me crying, he looked flustered, almost pained.

He came over and patted my back. "It's okay, Theona. Just let Clarine have the room. We'll have our own place once we're married anyway."

I didn't say a word. I just kept packing.

For the next two years, I put down roots on Wrangel Island. Our team completed several long-term field studies and filled in major gaps in the data on the island's ecosystem. I also helped film and produce several nature documentaries. One of them was selected for screening at an international nature documentary festival and even won an award in the natural history category. My research papers were published one after another. Our team was also invited to partner with several conservation groups on a college outreach tour to teach people about science and conservation. Two years later, I was no longer the girl people laughed at, the one her own family didn't want. I was now a field researcher, standing onstage and presenting my own work. The day I returned to my alma mater to give a talk, I was surprised to spot Clarine at the edge of the crowd. Her clothes were ragged, her hair a mess, and her face filthy. One of her legs was badly injured, and she sat huddled by the side of the road.

Loic confessed that he and Clarine had a history. "But even so, you're the only one I've ever loved," he said. "Clarine is so vicious. If I'd known what she did to you, I never would have gotten mixed up with her!"I found Loic's hypocrisy disgusting. More than anything, I regretted how blind I'd once been. How had I ever fallen for a man like this? And this time, Loic hadn't reached out just to win me back. What he really wanted was for me to talk my parents into backing off from the Beaumont family. That was when I learned Clarine had gone straight to Loic after being thrown out.Loic knew staying involved with Clarine would only hurt him, so of course he shut the door in her face."But she's completely insane. That night, when I was drunk, she actually recorded a video... She-she leaked it. She wants to take me down with her." Loic sounded like he was falling apart. To make this two-timing jerk pay for what he'd done to me, my father cut off all business ties with the Beaumont famil

The work had been progressing steadily since I arrived on Wrangel Island.Every morning, I headed out with the team. We tracked the polar bears' movements, set up cameras, checked the equipment, and waited patiently for the perfect shot.Watching and filming polar bears was slow, tedious work. But for the first time in my life, my days felt truly full.No one was telling me who I was supposed to be. No one was looking at me with disappointment or judging my choices.I could wait quietly on the ice for hours just to get one precious shot. And when I captured rare behavior on camera, I was as happy as a kid.I was enjoying this life more and more.Busy, free, and finally, truly my own.My parents never stopped looking for me. After going to great lengths, they finally got in touch with Ellen. They asked where I was and begged me to forgive them and come home.Ellen didn't know what to do, so she handed me the phone. Without a word, I shook my head and hung up.I'd given up on them comple

My father had people searching for me everywhere. But even after two whole days, they still hadn't found a trace of me.My mother clutched her phone and called me again and again. Every call went straight to voicemail. Then the essential oils I'd ordered for her arrived.Back when I first came home, my mother had trouble sleeping. So I secretly learned massage techniques and tried different essential oils to help her sleep. Every night, I'd massage her until she drifted off.My mother clutched the bottle of oil to her chest as tears rolled down her cheeks."So all this time, Theona... she'd been doing all of this for me." The more my mother thought about it, the more her heart ached. My father began remembering things too.No matter how late he came home from business dinners, I'd leave a light on and wait up with something for his hangover. After people mocked me at that dinner party, I practiced proper etiquette like my life depended on it. All I wanted was to make sure I'd never emb

That night, the wind picked up. My mother opened the door and came out to look for me, but I was nowhere to be seen. All she found was the beautifully wrapped box sitting by the door. She opened it. Inside was a scarf from a small, high-end label, one she absolutely loved."Well, that was sweet of Theona..." My mother smiled, feeling a little touched. She called me over and over, but I never answered. Her messages went unanswered too. Suddenly, she had a bad feeling.Just then, Clarine came out too, arm in arm with my father. Loic trailed behind them."Where's Theona?" My father still sounded stern, but when he saw the scarf in my mother's hands, his voice lost its edge. Before my mother could answer, Clarine jumped in. "Mom, Dad, Theona has no respect for either of you. Dad told her to stay here and think about what she'd done, but she ran off somewhere to have fun instead."She was trying to get my father worked up. But this time, my mother didn't go along with her."Theona must have

By the time I found the ring, it was getting dark, and I was frozen through.Shivering, I climbed out of the pond. Warm light spilled from the house. Inside, they were gathered around the table like one big happy family.I wanted to go in and take a hot shower, but the door was locked from the inside.Through the window, I could see the food on the table. Every dish was one of Clarine's favorites.Loic peeled a shrimp and held it to Clarine's lips. My mother sighed regretfully. "Maybe we should've waited a little longer before bringing Theona home. You might've fallen for Clarine by then, and she wouldn't have had to go through all this heartbreak."Loic smiled and playfully pinched Clarine's cheek. "Who knows? Maybe being your brother-in-law means I'll get to stay in your life longer than I ever would've as your boyfriend."In that moment, I felt sick to my stomach.Suddenly, I remembered the time Loic got drunk and blurted out Clarine's name while holding me in his arms. He'd said he
