Chapter 4

Author: Starry
A sharp, indescribable bitterness rose in my chest. My footsteps faltered, and I stayed frozen in the doorway.

A few minutes later, Selena emerged, supporting Preston as they walked out. I did a quick examination and confirmed his condition had indeed worsened. I directed Selena to help him into the ambulance I'd arranged on the way over.

Before we wheeled him into the operating room, Preston suddenly grabbed my hand. "Dr. Holt, you're the best surgeon in the state. Could you please perform my surgery?"

The medical staff nearby knew bits and pieces about my personal life. Seeing this situation unfold, one of them immediately stepped forward.

"Mr. Jones, Dr. Holt hasn't treated you before and isn't familiar with your case history. Perhaps another doctor should handle this. All of our orthopedic surgeons are highly qualified—"

But no matter how much they tried to persuade him, Preston clung stubbornly to my hand. "My injury is serious, and Lena is really worried about me. I don't trust anyone else. Please, Dr. Holt. Just this once."

He lifted his head toward Selena with a pitiful, pleading look. Selena hesitated, then turned to me. "Zacky, could you please?"

She probably didn't even realize she'd called me Zacky. Since things fell apart between us, I hadn't heard that name from her lips in two years. Now I was hearing it again, and only because of Preston.

I lowered my head, forcing myself to stay steady. "What if I said no?"

Selena fell silent for a moment. Then she reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a crumpled piece of paper.

It was a wish coupon I'd written for her when we first started dating as teenagers. In still-clumsy handwriting, it read, "Use this wish coupon, and Zack Holt will unconditionally grant Selena Sloane any one request."

"What if I use this?"

No matter how badly we'd fought before, no matter how many arguments or divorce threats we'd thrown around, I'd never felt afraid—because I knew Selena had this coupon. She could use it as a get-out-of-jail-free card for our marriage, a way to keep us from truly falling apart.

But now, for Preston's sake, she was using up this final chance.

"Fine, Selena. Don't say I didn't warn you."

I snatched the paper from her hand and walked into the operating room without looking back, afraid I'd lose it if I stayed any longer.

Preston's condition was genuinely critical. The internal bone structure had shifted, and the wire from the previous fixation had gone off-course. After 16 straight hours in surgery, I managed to save his lower back and legs.

When I finally stepped out of the operating room, dizziness washed over me. I could barely walk straight. Passing by the break room, I overheard the nurses huddled together, whispering.

"Dr. Holt is so pathetic. He actually operated on his wife's boy toy. I can't believe he'd put up with that!"

"He probably can't bear to lose his wife's money. But after this, he'll definitely be replaced."

"I heard the guy hurt his back in his wife's bed, if you know what I mean."

I stopped walking. Through the glass window, I saw Selena sitting at Preston's bedside, laughing and chatting with him. They looked so intimate and harmonious, like a real married couple.

A sharp, piercing pain tore through my chest. Suddenly, everything went black, and I felt myself collapsing.

Startled cries erupted around me. Selena finally looked in my direction. But by the time she rushed toward me in panic, I'd already fallen into a familiar embrace.

In that moment, Selena froze in place, her face deathly pale.

The younger Selena watched us, a look of relief spreading across her face. Her body began to fade, slowly becoming transparent as she dissolved into the air."Zacky, be happy. And you, 30-year-old me, if you mess up again, I'll find a way back from whatever timeline I'm in just to haunt you."After she disappeared, a letter remained on the couch. My hands shook as I picked it up and opened it. Her handwriting covered the page, careful and deliberate."Selena, by the time you read this, I'll be gone. I know you made so many mistakes and caused Zacky so much pain. I feel that guilt for you."You have to remember what mattered when we were young. Remember how hard you fought to marry Zacky. Remember that he's the most important person in your life, the one who should always come first."Never make him cry again. Never neglect him. Never let him suffer. Spoil him. Love him the way I do."Zacky, I'm sorry you went through all of that. I know your heart hurts, but please believe me. Th

When we ate together, Selena would pick out the things I didn't like and give me the best pieces of her omelet, just like she used to do at 18.But I couldn't just forgive and forget overnight. Everything that had happened left scars that ran deep and refused to fade. When she tried to hold my hand, I instinctively pulled away. When she tried to get close, I found excuses to keep my distance. When she wanted to stay in the bedroom at night, I coldly told her to sleep in the guest room."Zacky, I know you haven't forgiven me yet. That's okay. I can wait—however long it takes, until you're ready to let me back in."I didn't respond. I just turned and walked into the bedroom, shutting the door behind me.Not long after that, I was in my room reading one evening when I heard a muffled thud from the living room. I rushed out and found the younger Selena leaning against the couch. Her face was pale, sweat was beading on her forehead, and her eyes were unfocused."What's wrong?"I hurr

Selena immediately called the police and turned Preston over to the authorities. At the same time, she held a press conference to publicly clarify what had happened, explained Preston's con, and presented all the relevant evidence.Because she handled it so quickly, the company's plans to go public weren't affected at all. In fact, her transparency earned even more trust from investors and the public. After dealing with everything, Selena gathered all the evidence along with a divorce agreement and rushed to my place. She pushed open the door and saw the younger version and me sitting on the couch. She hesitated before walking over."Zacky, I'm sorry. I know I was wrong."She placed the evidence in front of me. "Preston told me you didn't care about me anymore. He said you only cared about your career and didn't want to deal with me. I was confused, and I believed him. That's why I fought with you and moved out."Then he staged that injury, and I fell for it again. I thought it wa

The younger Selena hesitated before speaking. However, we quickly found more records. The earliest diagnosis in his lower back injury file predated the car accident by nearly two months. In other words, when he supposedly hurt himself saving Selena in that crash, the injury had already existed."I knew something was off about him!"The younger version was seething. "He already had an old back injury. He calculated everything perfectly. He waited until my older self was fighting with you, timed it with the company going public, deliberately got close to her, and then lied about getting hurt saving her—all so she'd feel obligated to take care of him!"From the moment he approached Selena, this had been a complete scam. He hadn't just betrayed her feelings and trust. He'd staged a fake car accident and even manipulated me into performing surgery on him.Suddenly I remembered finding traces of old damage during the operation. At the time, I'd assumed they were from some earlier mino

The younger and older versions of Selena were two identical people with completely different attitudes toward me.I thought about my exhaustion in the operating room, how the older Selena pulled out that wish coupon to plead with me, and the way she laughed and chatted with Preston. My mind was a tangled mess, but in the end, I still didn't acknowledge her.Once my condition improved, I got myself discharged from the hospital. The younger Selena insisted on accompanying me home, holding my hand the entire way, afraid that I might collapse again. As we reached the building entrance, she suddenly leaned close to my ear and lowered her voice."Zacky, I think there's something off about Preston's injury. I've been thinking about it. It's too convenient that he had a relapse right when you finished surgery. And the way my older self treats him so well, but he still isn't satisfied? Something doesn't add up. I want to investigate him."Something clicked, but I didn't say anything. I jus

Third-Person POV18-year-old Selena, wearing a surgical mask, held Zack tightly and whirled around to shout at her older self."Are you blind? Can't you see Zacky's completely exhausted? He just spent 16 hours in the operating room, and you spent the whole time fussing over some other man. You didn't even notice he was about to collapse!"The older Selena stood rooted to the spot, her face ashen. The tenderness from moments ago vanished completely, replaced by panic and helplessness. She took two steps forward, reaching out to take Zack. "Let me. I'll take him to a room.""You don't deserve to!"The younger Selena shoved her hand away, making her stumble backward several steps. "The moment you made Zacky operate on that man, you lost the right to touch him!"She looked down at Zack's unconscious form on her back, her eyes full of heartache, though her voice remained ice-cold."If you actually cared about him, you wouldn't have watched him work himself to the point of collapsin
