Chapter 2

Author: Maureen Lynn
After a moment’s hesitation, Nova had no choice but to sigh heavily and sign her name.

“Lucien, you’re really too domineering. Being with you is just so stifling.

“Stef is really different from you…”

I did not give her a chance to keep rambling. Instead, I turned and walked out of the office.

Nova had probably long forgotten that I was the one who had kept this company afloat from the very beginning.

It was I who, bit by bit, had grown the company from a small workshop into what it is today.

As the company grew strong and successful, her pride grew with it. At some point, she had fallen for a younger assistant and started to resent my assertiveness.

If I had not been so assertive, her company would have gone out of business long ago!

Back at my desk, I took a deep breath, turned on my computer, and prepared to finish the unfinished project proposal.

However, the moment I opened my computer, I immediately noticed something wrong.

My permissions as Sales Manager had been restricted. I could no longer access the project files for our key clients.

Without any hesitation, I immediately called HR.

“What’s going on? Is there a system glitch?”

I demanded sternly. But all I got in response was a cold, dismissive “job reassignment” from HR.

In an instant, it dawned on me. It was Nova’s doing.

No wonder everyone at the office had been acting so awkwardly toward me earlier. It seemed Nova had already announced this so-called “job reassignment” long ago!

I hung up the phone immediately. Just as I was about to stand up to demand an explanation, Stef beat me to it and walked over to my desk.

When he saw me, he feigned surprise and covered his mouth. “Oh my gosh, Lucien, you’re at work this early today? It’s only 1:00 p.m.”

Hearing his insincere remark, I could not help but frown.

Sales was a profession with inherently irregular hours. After all, we visited client offices every day. It would be unsurprising to see us rarely present at the office.

As the top salesperson, I worked flexible hours and did not need to clock in. That was an unwritten rule in this company.

When I did not respond, Stef thought I was feeling guilty, so he raised his voice even higher and continued.

“This morning, the company took a close look at last month’s attendance records and found that you, Lucien, were either late or left early almost every day last month. Even so, you still earn a higher salary than anyone else in the entire office!

“Ms. Potter got so angry that she adjusted your position and transferred some of your projects to me.”

I scoffed. “Transferred them to you? What could you possibly do?”

To my surprise, Stef let out a cold laugh and looked at me with disdain. “Ms. Potter has the utmost confidence in my abilities.

“After all, last month, my sales figures were top in the entire company, while yours were at the bottom!”

I was stunned.

I had clearly closed a 5-million-dollar deal last month, did I not?

“That’s right, Stef is really impressive. He closed several major deals for the company last year.

“Stef has never ignored the company’s rules and regulations either, unlike Lucien. He’s always late or leaves early. He’s a real pain in the neck.”

The whispers of my colleagues reached my ears. My doubts grew heavier and heavier.

I looked at Stef. His eyes flashed with a barely perceptible flicker of panic.

I immediately caught on.

Without that last lifeline, Potter Corp quickly reached the end of the road. Not long after, I heard the news that Potter Corp was about to file for bankruptcy.Quite a few of my former colleagues even reached out to me, hoping to switch to Lightscape.Although I remembered how they had once shifted allegiances at the drop of a hat, I still followed procedure and arranged interviews for the capable ones, which helped bring quite a few talented people into Lightscape.Between recruiting and collaborating with overseas companies, I was running around nonstop every day.Seeing how hard I was working, Claire feared I might drop dead at my desk. So she insisted on giving me two days off and even drove me home herself.Unexpectedly, just as I reached my front door, I spotted a haggard figure crouching there from a distance.I thought it might be a criminal and was about to pull out my phone to call the police when I heard a familiar voice.“You’re back.” I looked closely and realized

Sure enough, on the day she was supposed to meet with Jaime, Nova arrived at the venue early. She had expected Jaime to show up as planned for the meeting, but what they got instead was Jaime’s questions.“Who are you? Where is Lucien?”Nova was shocked that Jaime knew my name and silently cursed Stef for not doing his job properly. She forced a smile and said, “I’m the head of Potter Corp. I’m here to represent the company for this collaboration.”Unexpectedly, Jaime did not give her any leeway and snapped back. “I don’t care who you are. Lucien was the one who negotiated with me earlier, and he’s the only one who knows the details. I’ll only speak to Lucien.”Those few words sent a cold sweat pouring down Nova’s forehead. Just as she was agonizing over what to do, Stef made a foolish decision.“Jaime, I am Lucien. Let’s discuss the partnership!” he said enthusiastically to Jaime.Jaime raised an eyebrow and finally shifted his gaze to Stef, who was standing nearby. Jaime’s ey

Stef chimed in sarcastically from the side. “Our dear Lucien really is something else. He always manages to find a patron at every company he joins. He’s already snagged a new woman in no time.”He intended to drive a wedge between my new colleagues and myself, but they were not falling for it at all. Instead, they started mocking him behind his back.“That guy is Potter Corp’s new sales manager, right?”“I heard that as soon as he took over, all of Potter Corp’s clients ran away, and now the company can’t even cover its expenses.”“Did this guy actually push Lucien out? Is Ms. Potter blind?”Those few remarks left Stef red-faced with shame. But no matter how hard he tried, he could not think of a way to refute the claims.I smirked calmly. “Ms. Potter, didn’t we make this perfectly clear last time? Why did you bring Stef here today? Did you come here specifically to gatecrash this meeting?”“Lucien, I’m giving you one last chance,” Nova continued, as stubborn as a mule. “If you

Over the past few days, Claire Sonmer from Lightscape, had invited me at least three times and offered terms I simply could not refuse. But I had always been afraid that Claire might turn out to be another Nova. Such individuals would cut me off after I had run out of use for them. So I never agreed just yet. However, after being provoked by Nova and Stef, I came to my senses. If I did not have a better platform to develop myself, those two would continue to be a pain in my neck. The only way to solve this problem completely was to ruin their reputations and leave them with nothing. However, Claire was unexpectedly sincere.“I know what happened to you at your previous company. It was very unfair to you.“I have great admiration for your abilities. If you’re willing to join us, I can give you a 30% stake in the company.“You won’t be my subordinate. You’ll be a shareholder.”There were no manipulative tactics. Just a substantial equity stake. That finally eliminated the last s

To no surprise, most clients expressed their willingness to continue working with me and asked me to contact them as soon as I had settled down in my new company.Stef and Nova quickly lost their composure. Shortly after returning from the New Year’s holidays, they received several notices from partners terminating their contracts. They did not last more than a few days before Nova brought Stef to my door.“We were wrong about this,” Nova said, softening her tone for the first time ever. While suppressing her emotions, she asked. “Did you cause this mess with our partners?”I shrugged it off. “How could that be? I’m just a lowly salesperson. I don’t have that kind of influence.”“Lucien, you piece of trash!” Stef lunged forward to grab my shirt, but I shoved him away forcefully.I frowned and looked at Nova. “What exactly are you trying to accomplish by bringing this madman here today?”Nova sensed my impatience. She immediately pulled Stef back and forced a smile. “This company

I turned and walked back to my desk. I started to pack up my things with mechanical efficiency. “Lucien, can’t you be a little less impulsive?” Nova frowned. “The job market is so bad right now. You’re in your thirties. No company is going to hire you if you quit now.”I brushed her hand aside. “Ms. Potter, we’re divorced. My business has nothing to do with you.“Besides, you should be more concerned about how Stef will handle the project from now on.” I smiled at her coldly. “After all, you know just how ‘capable’ he is.”Stumped by my retort, Nova said awkwardly, “In that case, make sure you hand over your work to Stef properly. Don’t pull any stunts on me.”“What’s there to hand over?” I said sarcastically. “After all, I’m just a lowly salesperson. On the other hand, Mr. Law is a brilliant high achiever. Having him manage the company is a blessing for you. I wish you all the best in growing the business and achieving even greater heights!”With that, I opened my laptop withou
