Chapter 3

Auteur: Mimi Winterrest
My stomach churned. I rushed to the bathroom, clung to the toilet, and started retching violently.

Nothing came out except a mouthful of bitter bile.

I looked at myself in the mirror—my eyes bloodshot, my face deathly pale—and suddenly felt that the peace and happiness I'd had over the past four years were nothing more than a bubble.

It had looked so dazzling and almost too perfect to be real. But now that it had burst, there was nothing left but emptiness.

I didn't cry. My anger and shock left no room for tears.

I picked up my phone again and opened Gavin's account. I was looking for clues in the photos where no one's face was visible. However, in one photo, a half-open window offered a faint glimpse of the top of a tower outside. It was the Starwave TV Tower, Hilburg's most recognizable landmark.

In another photo, the corner of a distinctive chain coffee shop sign could be seen.

And another photo captured the lion statues at the entrance of a residential complex.

In less than half an hour, I had tracked Gavin down to the upscale gated community of Camellia Woods in Hilburg, less than two miles from a major theme park.

Without hesitation, I changed into comfortable sportswear, grabbed my car keys along with all my documents, and walked into the garage.

The moment I started the engine, I felt strangely calm and focused. I didn't want to confront them over the phone or listen to more of their lies and excuses; I had to see it for myself.

I wanted to see how the woman I had fought so hard to save and the friend I had trusted with all my life could betray me behind my back, crush my dignity, and build a happy family of their own.

My hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly that my knuckles turned white.

More than a decade of memories flashed through my mind like scenes from a movie.

When Clara was 16, her father had assaulted her until her head bled. She hid in my guest room, clutching my sleeve helplessly and whispering, "Tom, you're all I have."

At 22, when she accepted my proposal and slipped the engagement ring onto her finger, tears shimmered in her eyes. She had said, "Gavin, I'll love you with everything I have for the rest of my life."

Just last week, while she was blow-drying my hair, she smiled and said, "Honey, let's have a baby. A little boy who looks just like you."

I also recalled memories with Gavin, who had once pounded his chest in our college dorm and told me, "Tom, if anyone ever tries to mess with you, I'll beat them up!"

He was also the one who hugged me at the airport before he supposedly left the country, his eyes red with emotion, saying, "Tom, promise me you'll be happy."

Those memories blended, eventually settling on that photo of two hands clasped together in the post and that devastating line beneath it.

"She comes to see us all the time now. The three of us are so happy together."

Clara, I never knew you were this good at pretending.

I arrived at the theme park and found a place nearby to settle in, waiting for my chance.

The next morning, Gavin posted, "Good morning! Off to the theme park! Dressed my little sweetheart in the cutest bunny outfit today!"

He had taken the selfie from the passenger seat, and I immediately recognized the familiar interior of Clara's black Maybach.

I waited at the entrance of the theme park, ready to catch them when they arrived.

I watched her through the glass in silence. This was the woman I had loved for over a decade—the woman whose life I had saved twice."Clara, do you know?" I finally spoke, my voice calm as it echoed through the empty room. "That day at the theme park... if you had told me the truth right away and shown even the slightest bit of remorse... maybe I'd have only asked for a breakup and let you go."But what did you do instead? You enjoyed the life you had with me while still holding on to the one you built with Gavin. You kept lying to me, all just to protect yourself." Clara closed her eyes sorrowfully as tears streamed down her face."Tom... I was wrong. I know I was wrong. Please, give me one more chance. I'm begging you. For the sake of everything we've been through since we were kids..." pleaded Clara. My eyes burned as tears threatened to fall."Clara, do you remember what you asked me all those years ago?"I slowly stepped closer to the glass, staring into her eyes as I sai

I pressed charges against Clara for bigamy and fraud.Although the fake marriage certificate allowed her to slip through a legal loophole, she and Gavin had lived as husband and wife for years and even had a child together. There was no denying that she had committed bigamy. On the afternoon the court summons was issued, I received a call from an unknown number. The moment I answered, Clara's panicked cries and Gavin's angry shouting came through the phone."Tom Rieger! Are you happy now? Do you have to push us to the edge?" Gavin roared. "My reputation is ruined! How is my child supposed to hold her head up after this? You're a monster!""I'm a monster?" I said coldly. "Gavin, when you flaunted the life you stole from me online and sent anonymous accusations to my company, did you give a damn about my reputation? Did you even care how much damage you were doing to me?""I'll kill you! I swear I'll kill you!" Gavin exploded.A heavy crash came from the other end of the line, fo

I returned to my hometown that very night, back to my parents'.I locked myself in my room, refusing to eat or drink, just mindlessly scrolling through my phone.Knowing Gavin's character, he was never the type to let something like this slide. Sure enough, early the next morning, I received a call from my boss."Tom, what's going on?" my boss asked, his tone heavy and serious. "Someone sent an anonymous email to the company with photos attached, accusing you of being the other man."I couldn't help but sneer inwardly, "Gavin, I knew you'd pull this trick."I explained to my boss, "Sir, I'm not the other man. I'll handle this properly. To avoid bringing any trouble to the company, I'd like to submit my resignation."After hanging up, I checked every social media platform and local forum I could find.Gavin had already spread the article smearing me across every major social platform. He even paid people to dig up my personal information, exposing my real name and workplace onl

Those words struck Clara like a devastating blow. She jerked her head up. Her face turned pale instantly, and her eyes flickered with shock. When Clara was in middle school, her parents went through a messy divorce. She had tried to stop them, only to be beaten black and blue by her father and thrown out of the house.I happened to see her on the street while taking out the trash, so I brought her into my house and settled her in the guest room. She sat there trembling, refusing to say a word.Later that night, when I returned to my room, she suddenly grabbed my arm, looking at me with the same sorrow and desperation in her eyes."Tom, are you going to abandon me, too?"I snapped back to reality when Clara suddenly shoved Gavin away and threw herself at my feet, clutching my legs as her voice broke with tears."No... No, Tom, that's not true! I'm not abandoning you! I've never wanted to leave you! Tom, please don't look at me like that. Please... don't leave me..."She broke do

Their so-called home was a luxury riverfront residence in Hilburg, one of the most prestigious addresses in town. The moment I stepped inside, I let out a bitter laugh. The interior was almost identical to my home. No, to be precise, that place felt warmer, more like a real home than the one I had with Clara. In the entryway sat the smart shoe cabinet with motion sensors that I had recently been eyeing online but never got around to buying. Somehow, it was already installed there. On the coffee table in the living room was a scented candle from the niche brand I loved.Every little thing I'd ever mentioned to make our home more comfortable was right there. Then it hit me that Clara had been buying two of everything all along. One for our home, just to placate me. The other for that house, to make Gavin happy. The most painful irony was the huge wedding portrait hanging behind the couch. In the photo, Gavin was smiling brightly as Clara kissed his cheek, with the Ihory sunset

The moment Gavin saw me, his expression froze. His eyes widened in shock, his mouth fell open, and every trace of color drained from his face, leaving him terribly pale. His phone slipped from his hand and hit the ground with a loud clatter.Just then, Clara stepped out of the line with two ice creams in hand. "Naomi! Gavin! I got the ice cream!" She called out with a smile, then followed Gavin's frozen stare. When she spotted me just ten feet away, staring at her coldly, her smile died on her lips.Around us, the crowd remained lively, filled with laughter and chatter, while an unbearable silence settled between the three of us.Gavin looked at me as if he couldn't believe his eyes. He instinctively took half a step back and clutched the hem of his shirt.I gave them a polite smile that was almost unsettling in its calmness."Well, what a coincidence," I said flatly."I didn't expect to see you here." My voice was low, but every word carried. "Aren't you going to invite me
