Chapter 2

Autor: Mimi Winterrest
I was shaking all over, and I had bitten my lower lip so hard I could taste blood.

With trembling hands, I tapped on the poster's profile.

It loaded for a brief moment before a notification popped up.

"You cannot view this user's profile due to their privacy settings."

He had blocked my account.

The username was "Gavster".

I knew it was Gavin Johnson, my best friend. It was the nickname his family used for him.

We had been college roommates for four years and were like brothers; we were close enough to share almost anything. Besides Clara, he was the person I trusted most.

I introduced her to him in freshman year.

I never imagined that it would be the biggest mistake of my life.

Forcing myself to calm down, I closed the app, switched to a burner account I had never used before, and opened his profile again.

There were hundreds, maybe thousands, of posts. Each one felt like another deliberate cut, tearing me apart piece by piece.

"The baby kicked today. I felt her belly, and she got teary-eyed, saying this is the proof of our love."

The photo showed two hands resting on a rounded pregnant belly.

The woman's wrist bore that same faint scar.

"Our first trip as a family of three. As long as she's by my side, I'm not afraid of anything."

The photo showed a sunny beach. A little girl, no more than two or three years old, was held in the man's arms.

Beside him stood a woman with only the lower half of her face and her gentle smile visible.

I recognized that jawline and that smile immediately. I had kissed those lips countless times. They were as familiar to me as my own reflection.

I couldn't help but keep scrolling Gavin's posts.

Every photo and every caption lined up perfectly with my memories, exposing the truth behind all her lies.

Three years ago, during the Labor Day holiday, Clara told me she had to spend several months out of town overseeing a project.

In reality, she had been staying in the neighboring state with Gavin while she waited to give birth to his child.

On my birthday two years ago, she told me her flight had been delayed, and she couldn't make it home on time.

The truth was, Gavin had taken their daughter to the hospital because she had a high fever, and Clara had stayed with them there all night.

Last month, on our wedding anniversary, she gave me a Rolex. But behind my back, she bought Gavin a Porsche and posted, "A reward for my greatest hero."

The post that disturbed me the most was this. "The marriage certificate his wife and I have is the real one."

I immediately opened the drawer and pulled out the marriage certificate Clara and I had kept. It was an official record of our marriage, signed by both of us.

Beside it was our wedding photo, the two of us smiling like we had a future together.

I couldn't believe she would go that far to deceive me.

Then I remembered our college graduation party. Everyone was celebrating that night, and Gavin kept pushing drinks on me.

I'd never been able to hold my liquor, so after just a few drinks, everything went black.

When I woke up the next morning, I was in a hotel room with a splitting headache.

Clara was sitting beside the bed, her eyes bloodshot as she gripped my hand tightly and said, "Tom… I drank too much last night. I didn't take good care of you. I'm so sorry."

At that time, I thought she was blaming herself for not stopping me from drinking so much.

But looking back, I realized that apology had nothing to do with my drunken state.

She had been apologizing because while I lay unconscious that night, she was sleeping with my best friend in the room next door.

Not long after that, Gavin came to me with tears welling in his eyes, saying he had been dumped and wanted to go abroad to get his mind off things.

Like a fool, I even went to the airport to see him off, hugging him goodbye with a lump in my throat and telling him to take care of himself.

But he had never left the country.

He'd been living in the neighboring state, raising the child he had with Clara and enjoying her love and care.

All the while, he also shamelessly mocked me online—the husband who had no idea he was being betrayed.

I watched her through the glass in silence. This was the woman I had loved for over a decade—the woman whose life I had saved twice."Clara, do you know?" I finally spoke, my voice calm as it echoed through the empty room. "That day at the theme park... if you had told me the truth right away and shown even the slightest bit of remorse... maybe I'd have only asked for a breakup and let you go."But what did you do instead? You enjoyed the life you had with me while still holding on to the one you built with Gavin. You kept lying to me, all just to protect yourself." Clara closed her eyes sorrowfully as tears streamed down her face."Tom... I was wrong. I know I was wrong. Please, give me one more chance. I'm begging you. For the sake of everything we've been through since we were kids..." pleaded Clara. My eyes burned as tears threatened to fall."Clara, do you remember what you asked me all those years ago?"I slowly stepped closer to the glass, staring into her eyes as I sai

I pressed charges against Clara for bigamy and fraud.Although the fake marriage certificate allowed her to slip through a legal loophole, she and Gavin had lived as husband and wife for years and even had a child together. There was no denying that she had committed bigamy. On the afternoon the court summons was issued, I received a call from an unknown number. The moment I answered, Clara's panicked cries and Gavin's angry shouting came through the phone."Tom Rieger! Are you happy now? Do you have to push us to the edge?" Gavin roared. "My reputation is ruined! How is my child supposed to hold her head up after this? You're a monster!""I'm a monster?" I said coldly. "Gavin, when you flaunted the life you stole from me online and sent anonymous accusations to my company, did you give a damn about my reputation? Did you even care how much damage you were doing to me?""I'll kill you! I swear I'll kill you!" Gavin exploded.A heavy crash came from the other end of the line, fo

I returned to my hometown that very night, back to my parents'.I locked myself in my room, refusing to eat or drink, just mindlessly scrolling through my phone.Knowing Gavin's character, he was never the type to let something like this slide. Sure enough, early the next morning, I received a call from my boss."Tom, what's going on?" my boss asked, his tone heavy and serious. "Someone sent an anonymous email to the company with photos attached, accusing you of being the other man."I couldn't help but sneer inwardly, "Gavin, I knew you'd pull this trick."I explained to my boss, "Sir, I'm not the other man. I'll handle this properly. To avoid bringing any trouble to the company, I'd like to submit my resignation."After hanging up, I checked every social media platform and local forum I could find.Gavin had already spread the article smearing me across every major social platform. He even paid people to dig up my personal information, exposing my real name and workplace onl

Those words struck Clara like a devastating blow. She jerked her head up. Her face turned pale instantly, and her eyes flickered with shock. When Clara was in middle school, her parents went through a messy divorce. She had tried to stop them, only to be beaten black and blue by her father and thrown out of the house.I happened to see her on the street while taking out the trash, so I brought her into my house and settled her in the guest room. She sat there trembling, refusing to say a word.Later that night, when I returned to my room, she suddenly grabbed my arm, looking at me with the same sorrow and desperation in her eyes."Tom, are you going to abandon me, too?"I snapped back to reality when Clara suddenly shoved Gavin away and threw herself at my feet, clutching my legs as her voice broke with tears."No... No, Tom, that's not true! I'm not abandoning you! I've never wanted to leave you! Tom, please don't look at me like that. Please... don't leave me..."She broke do

Their so-called home was a luxury riverfront residence in Hilburg, one of the most prestigious addresses in town. The moment I stepped inside, I let out a bitter laugh. The interior was almost identical to my home. No, to be precise, that place felt warmer, more like a real home than the one I had with Clara. In the entryway sat the smart shoe cabinet with motion sensors that I had recently been eyeing online but never got around to buying. Somehow, it was already installed there. On the coffee table in the living room was a scented candle from the niche brand I loved.Every little thing I'd ever mentioned to make our home more comfortable was right there. Then it hit me that Clara had been buying two of everything all along. One for our home, just to placate me. The other for that house, to make Gavin happy. The most painful irony was the huge wedding portrait hanging behind the couch. In the photo, Gavin was smiling brightly as Clara kissed his cheek, with the Ihory sunset

The moment Gavin saw me, his expression froze. His eyes widened in shock, his mouth fell open, and every trace of color drained from his face, leaving him terribly pale. His phone slipped from his hand and hit the ground with a loud clatter.Just then, Clara stepped out of the line with two ice creams in hand. "Naomi! Gavin! I got the ice cream!" She called out with a smile, then followed Gavin's frozen stare. When she spotted me just ten feet away, staring at her coldly, her smile died on her lips.Around us, the crowd remained lively, filled with laughter and chatter, while an unbearable silence settled between the three of us.Gavin looked at me as if he couldn't believe his eyes. He instinctively took half a step back and clutched the hem of his shirt.I gave them a polite smile that was almost unsettling in its calmness."Well, what a coincidence," I said flatly."I didn't expect to see you here." My voice was low, but every word carried. "Aren't you going to invite me
