Chapter 5

Author: Blue Carberry
"Officer Newman, you've got to be kidding me, right?" I asked.

Ethan didn't say a word, just kept his piercing gaze fixed on me. His stare sent a freezing shiver straight down my spine.

"Charlie, I know this is incredibly hard to process right now, but the cameras don't lie."

He turned his computer monitor toward me. The footage was paused on a clip of me—and only me—walking into my building.

I stared blankly at the screen.

It was true. The streets had been empty that night, and I was the only person captured on camera. And right there in my hands, I was carrying that exact gift box.

My memory began to fracture, and I desperately tried to piece it back together, but nothing made sense.

"C-Could the footage have been tampered with?" I asked, my voice trembling as I clutched at the final straw.

"If this person could successfully impersonate my wife, she could easily hack into a security system. Hacker tech is insanely advanced these days…"

Ethan let out a slow sigh, a flicker of pity crossing his face. "Charlie, you can alter timestamps, but the person in that frame is undeniably you, and that box is undeniably in your hands.

"Are you suggesting a killer specifically chose an object you handled, managed to bypass every single camera to slip into your apartment, and left absolutely zero physical evidence behind?"

He leaned forward. "What kind of master criminal has that level of counter-surveillance capability? And all of that just to frame an ordinary, stay-at-home guy?"

Ethan's words hit me like a bucket of ice water.

I opened my mouth, but no sound came out.

Yet, I knew my memory wasn't playing tricks on me. Someone had been in my home that night.

Suddenly, a spark ignited in my brain. "I took pictures that night!"

I bolted upright, knocking my chair backward with a loud clang. "We took photos during dinner! Alayna is right there in the frame! The photo will have the timestamp!"

With frantic hands, I scrambled to open my phone's gallery and shoved the screen toward him. "Look! This has to prove it!"

Ethan took the phone, exchanging a quick look with his partner.

The screen clearly displayed the metadata for the photo. "April 1, 2026, 9:47 pm."

When zoomed in, Alayna's face was perfectly clear. She was smiling at the camera, raising a wine glass, with the gift box sitting right next to her hand.

The interrogation room plunged into a heavy silence.

As Ethan stared at the image, his brow furrowed into a tight knot.

He looked back at the surveillance footage, then back to the photo.

On one side stood the absolute objectivity of the security cameras, proving no one had entered.

On the other side stood a hard digital file, proving the dinner had actually happened.

The two pieces of evidence sat side by side like two parallel universes, grinding the investigation to a complete halt.

No one spoke. The only movement in the room was the red digits of the digital wall clock, silently ticking away the seconds.

I slumped into my chair, completely drained of energy. My mind was a tangled web of chaos.

When I closed my eyes, all I could see was Alayna's face, warping back and forth between her usual gentle smile and the cold look in her eyes under the candlelight that night.

The images blurred together until I couldn't tell what was real anymore.

Suddenly, a sharp knock shattered the silence, and a female officer burst into the room.

The folder in her hand seemed to weigh a ton. Her face was deathly pale—visibly worse off than mine.

"Captain Newman, the expedited lab results just came back."

Ethan snatched the report from her hands and skimmed through the lines of text.

In a fraction of a second, his pupils dilated with absolute shock. "The DNA from the severed hand… matches Alayna?"

Janice's expression twisted in rage. Already in the throes of withdrawal, she was a bundle of nerves, and my words acted like a match tossed into a powder keg.I turned and walked away.By the time I reached the elevator, the sound of breaking glass echoed down the hallway behind me.The drugs were theirs to begin with. Their demises were of their own making.I had simply given them a gentle nudge.…Three days later, the police released their official statement.Alayna's missing person case was closed. Her remains had been recovered from an abandoned factory in the suburbs. The forensic report confirmed it was a homicide.Because both prime suspects, Ray and Janice, were dead, the criminal case was legally dismissed. The briefing was concise. It simply stated that Ray had gotten into an argument with Alayna over their relationship and accidentally killed her. He then conspired with Janice to dispose of the body and frame me.Later, a dispute over splitting their assets trig

The recording cut off abruptly. The same heavy, suffocating silence that had filled the interrogation room now blanked the bedroom around us.I stood out on the balcony, watching the police lights flicker against the pavement below.Alayna's voice kept echoing in my ears. "You know how he is. He works from home all day. He has no social life and no friends. He can't survive without me."So that was who I was to her.All those years of tenderness, playful banter, and endless devotion over our eight-year marriage were all an act."Charlie," Ethan called out softly.I turned around, my face entirely blank."There's another recording on Ray's phone." He tapped the screen again. This time, it was Ray and a different woman. Her voice was raspy, carrying a distinct southern drawl."Everything is taken care of. He didn't suspect a thing."Ray answered, "Janice, are you sure he didn't notice?"Janice. My eyes narrowed."Relax. I know Alayna's face better than anyone. People have b

"How did he die?" I asked. The tech officer shook his head. "Forensics is still processing the scene, but initial signs point to homicide. The estimated time of death is four to five days ago."Four to five days ago. That meant late March or early April. Right around the time Alayna supposedly left for her trip and right when the impostor showed up at my apartment."Captain Newman wants me to bring you over to identify something. Also, they tracked down the guest who registered for Room 308 at the budget hotel.""Who was it?""Janice Watson. Alayna's sister."Janice.The name struck my brain like a bolt of lightning.Alayna did have a sister, three years her junior. I had only met her twice, back at our wedding. I heard she had moved down south years ago, fell into drug addiction, and the family had cut ties with her long ago.Why on earth was she here?20 minutes later, the police cruiser pulled up outside Westwood Serenity Residences.Ray's apartment was on the sixth floo

My heart hammered violently against my ribs.Ray Stevenson. I had never heard this name in my life.Naomi unlocked her phone, pulled up a photograph, and slid it over to me. "Do you recognize him?"The picture showed a young man with a mullet and a gentle, clean-cut face. He had a strikingly handsome smile.I shook my head, but my hands wouldn't stop shaking.Ethan looked at me, softening his voice a fraction. "Charlie, what I'm about to say is going to be difficult to hear, but you need to brace yourself. Based on the evidence we've gathered so far, it is highly probable that Alayna was having an extramarital affair. This man, Ray, was her lover."I opened my mouth, but my throat felt completely blocked. An affair. A lover. The words coming from Ethan hit me, but it felt like they were passing through a layer of something, as if they never fully reached me.It didn't make sense. None of it made sense. We had been married for eight years. This was the woman who squeezed toot

My face was entirely bloodless, and my eyes were ringed with a bright red. I looked like a ghost. But the real ghost was currently hiding out there in the dark.It didn't take long for the tech team to bring back a second report."The security footage was definitely tampered with," the tech officer, Kevin Clark, said as he pointed to the monitor. On the screen, the alleyway outside my building was completely empty, and the timestamp was ticking along steadily."On the surface, it looks seamless. But we analyzed the underlying metadata. The timestamp is a virtual stream overlaid after the fact, and the source file shows clear signs of frame-rate rewriting.""Which means…" Ethan kept his eyes glued to the monitor."This video showing that nobody entered or left was spliced in over the original footage.""Exactly. What's more, we traced the server logs," Kevin added, his fingers flying across his keyboard. "Between 7:00 pm and 10:00 pm on April 1st, there was an anomalous remote a

"The hand belongs to… Alayna?"Ethan's words felt like a sudden crack of thunder striking me right in the skull. My ears rang violently, and the overhead lights blurred into a blinding haze. Then, another thought pierced my mind like an icicle. That hand had been brutally hacked off. How much agony must Alayna have been in?I looked down at my own hands, and a sudden memory flashed of the raw streak of red on the impostor's arm.Where did that scratch come from?My stomach churned violently. I covered my mouth, bent over, and began to dry-heave.Tears and sweat slicked my face as I sat there curled up, shivering uncontrollably.Ethan handed me a cup of warm water with a look of genuine pity in his eyes.I forced my head up, knowing I must look completely pathetic. "Then… what about my wife? Has she been… murdered? And who… who was the person on the phone just now?"Ethan didn't answer right away. He motioned for his partner to stay by my side, then got up and walked out while
