Chapter 3

Author: Starlet
“You wish. Eric has not been well lately. He needs supplements to recover. You have lived here for years, so you should repay some of that debt.”

Eric leaned against the couch and looked at me with a sickly expression.

“That’s right. I’ve only managed because Stacy has been taking care of me.”

Wendy gently tucked the blanket around him, then said to me in a commanding tone, “Mom is getting old, and Eric is sick. Stop causing trouble.”

A cold laugh echoed in my mind.

When I collapsed in the office from overworking, she did not even call once.

When Ken had a high fever and was hospitalized, she never came to see him.

My mother-in-law always looked down on me. She treated us with cold indifference.

Wendy focused entirely on her career and ignored the family.

So, why should I stay and serve them?

I clenched my teeth, picked up my son, and headed for the bedroom.

As I passed the living room, I heard Wendy and Eric talking.

“Darling, if you had not stepped in as Stacy, I would not know how to go on.”

Her voice softened as she said, “I’m here. I won’t leave you alone. I’ll stay with you. I convinced Mom too. Otherwise, how would she agree to let me pretend to be Stacy?”

My nails dug into my palm until blood oozed out.

So, Eric and Wendy had been involved for a long time. Even my mother-in-law was in on it.

Their relationship started earlier than I imagined, while I remained completely in the dark.

As I looked at my sleeping son, I told myself that I would endure this farce for a little longer. Soon, we would leave this place.

Sure enough, the next day, I received a transfer order to the Calinorma branch. I could report there at any time.

I immediately packed my things.

Just as I reached the door, Wendy appeared with a grim expression.

Her gaze locked onto the ticket in my hand. Her voice turned cold.

“Where are you going?”

I slipped the ticket into my pocket and shielded Ken behind me.

“That’s none of your business, Stacy.”

I emphasized her sister’s name.

Her expression froze for a moment, then softened.

“Don’t be upset. If you stay, I can help take care of Ken.”

I looked at her coldly. “No need. From today on, we’ll have nothing to do with your family.”

I grabbed my son and moved to leave.

She rushed forward, snatched my briefcase, and pulled out the ticket.

Without hesitation, she tore it into pieces and looked down at me.

“I’m doing this for your own good. You’re taking care of a child alone. You don’t know Calinorma well. You’re better off staying here. At least you will have support.”

As I watched the shredded pieces of the ticket fall, anger surged through me.

I shoved her aside. “Stop pretending. You know I am your brother-in-law, so stay away from me.”

Instead of backing off, she stepped closer. Her eyes were cold.

“You should think about this carefully. My family has supported you all these years. And you think you can just leave? Not that easy.”

I let out a mocking laugh.

In my previous life and at the hospital, I begged her to save my son, yet she refused.

When I wanted to leave, they all tried to stop me.

“Who do you think you are? My wife? My son and I will leave whenever we want. You don’t get to interfere.”

She frowned, then suddenly softened her tone.

“Are you misunderstanding something? Even if Wendy is gone, we’re still family.”

Before she could finish, I slapped her.

She staggered, and her face twisted with fury.

“You dare hit me? You are definitely not leaving today!”

She grabbed my wrist and dragged me toward the room while I struggled.

At that moment, a commotion came from outside, followed by the door being pushed open.

When she saw who it was, her face turned deathly pale.

A few minutes later, Eric came out first. The moment he saw her, he rushed over and hugged her.“Are you okay, honey?”She shoved him away.“Who are you calling that? I’m Wendy, not your wife!”Panic flashed in his eyes.“What are you saying? I just convinced the police that we’re legally married.”She froze as if struck by lightning. My mother-in-law hurried over and whispered mysteriously, “Don’t worry. I handled everything. They won’t suspect that you pretended to be Stacy.”I let out a cold laugh. She thought she had found witnesses to prove her identity. She did not realize they were lying for her while feeling proud of it.The police came out and said sternly, “You are suspected of unlawful detention and fraud. You will be held legally responsible. As for your job, that depends on your company.”Everyone knew she would not keep it.She broke down and shouted, “Why are you lying? Why will you not tell the truth?”Eric looked startled and said aggrieved, “What do you

I shook off her hand. I looked at her with a mocking expression.“My wife is dead. What are you pretending for? Do you think this will fool me?”She raised her left arm.“Look, this birthmark proves it—”I cut her off.“What does that prove? Twins can have the same birthmarks.”She grew more anxious and tried to drag me away.I struggled hard. Catching her off guard, I shoved her aside and ran toward the parking exit. She chased after me in anger and grabbed my arm again. Suddenly, blinding headlights lit up the area.Several security guards rushed over and restrained her with practiced efficiency. The surveillance cameras had flagged something unusual, and security arrived just in time. They immediately called the police and asked with concern, “Are you alright?”Before I could answer, she screamed hysterically, “What are you doing? I ran into Wendy again at the hospital.I had just finished giving my son his medicine, and Vanessa was helping to watch over him.As I stepped out of the ward, a cold voice came from behind.“Who is this woman?”Wendy stood beside Eric. Her eyes were dark as she stared at us.I did not want to deal with her and pulled Vanessa along to leave. However, she quickly caught up and grabbed my arm.“I’m talking to you!”I turned around, shook her off in disgust, and said coldly, “What right do you have to question me, Stacy?”She instinctively glanced at Eric.“You’re my brother-in-law. Of course, I can ask! My sister has only recently passed, and you are already with another woman. Do you have no shame?”I ignored her and tried to leave. She stepped in front of Vanessa and looked down at her.“Do you even know what kind of person he is? He has a child. After his wife died, he immediately started looking for new women to take her place. If he is interested in you, maybe he is ju

After Wendy’s death, my mother-in-law rushed to the insurance company to claim compensation. However, she did not know there was another policy. She shoved me hard and screamed,“What do you mean by ‘your compensation’?”“I am her mother. This money should go to me. What kind of idiot gave it to you?!”I clenched my teeth and stared at the documents, desperately thinking of a way to take them back.Just then, more people poured in from outside, and a stern voice rang out, saying, “This is compensation issued by the company according to its policy. Is there a problem?”It was President White from Wendy’s company. He walked in with several security guards.Seeing the chaotic scene, his face darkened.“The accidental death insurance compensation issued by the company belongs to Leo and his son. No one is allowed to take it.”The burly guards stood at the door, and everyone fell silent.Wendy immediately put on a pitiful expression and stepped forward.“You have been deceived.”

Eric stood at the doorway. Several colleagues from the company were behind him.He let out a sharp exclamation. His gaze turned cold when he saw Wendy gripping my wrist.“What are you doing?”The others exchanged looks and began whispering.“Is that not her brother-in-law? Why are they tangled up like that?”“Unbelievable. She just passed, and these two are already involved.”The moment Wendy saw Eric, panic flashed across her face. She let go of me and hurried to his side.“You misunderstood. He wouldn’t stop harassing me.”She pointed at me, and her face was filled with indignation.“He insisted that I was Wendy and even asked me to take her place and take care of him. He said he cannot live without a woman!”My heart sank instantly. The way she accused me was exactly the same as before. She looked at me with disgust while clinging to Eric’s arm.His expression darkened as he cursed at me.“You piece of trash!
