Chapter 4

Author: Perfect Timing
Tanya's face turned livid in an instant.

How could her fat, embarrassing daughter openly berate her in front of the childhood sweetheart she cherished most—now an accomplished man, no less? It was nothing short of sheer humiliation.

She completely ignored the snark in Harry's comment and immediately deemed Melanie a rude, unreasonable brat. Meanwhile, as her father, I became the culprit for raising such an insolent and embarrassing daughter.

It didn't help that our appearances never met her beauty standards. Her resentment toward us had been building for a long time. So, all her old grievances and fresh anger exploded in our faces at once.

No matter how much I tried to explain afterward, or how Melanie apologized for "rudely" defending me, Tanya refused to listen.

In the end, she was swayed by Harry's advice.

"She's still young. You must start working on her figure and character early. Sending them to a professional facility to shape her up will do her good in the long run."

Under the noble-sounding pretexts of doing what was best for us, helping us achieve the perfect figure, and taming our unruly personalities, Tanya made her cruel decision.

She sent Melanie and me away to a weight-loss training camp in a remote area. The place was known for its strict rules and harsh living conditions.

In her eyes, it was perhaps the perfect solution to pack us up and send us away. She could punish us for talking back and humiliating her, all while supposedly reforming us for our sake.

No one could've imagined this trip would send Melanie and me tumbling into a living hell, from which there would be no escape.

Those humiliating and agonizing memories surged through my mind like an icy tide.

One scene after another flashed before my eyes, until they all froze on Melanie's pale, emaciated face—how she slowly lost all signs of life.

The overwhelming grief and despair shattered what little remained of my already fragile nerves. A sudden, tearing pain tore through my chest.

My heart, already damaged by prolonged starvation and overexertion at the training camp, felt as though it were being ripped apart.

My vision went black. My body began convulsing violently beyond my control, and then I collapsed onto the cold, hard floor.

Before my consciousness sank into darkness, I heard Tanya's familiar cold voice. "What are you trying to pull this time? To farm sympathy? Enough with the act!"

…

The next time I opened my eyes, I found myself lying in a hospital bed, an IV needle inserted into the back of my hand.

Seeing that I was awake, Tanya merely remarked flatly, "I had no idea you had heart disease. I wonder if Melanie might inherit it."

I was utterly defeated by then. I reached out and grabbed the hem of her clothes. "Tanya, haven't you always wanted a divorce? I'll agree to it now! We can get divorced right away! Let's do it today!"

Afraid she might not believe me, or think I was playing some ridiculous hard-to-get game, I hurriedly added, "I can sign the papers immediately! I won't take anything from our marital assets!

"All my assets, my shares in the company, I-I'll give them all up! Just let me go! Let me leave this place, and I'll give you everything! Please, I'm begging you…"

My voice broke with emotion as I repeated desperately, "I can give up everything—everything except Melanie's ashes..."

The word "ashes" shifted Tanya's expression. "Ashes? Whose ashes? Say that again?"

The crowd burst into a frenzy, instinctively scattering to either side and clearing a path down the middle.A skeletal figure appeared before them, clad in rags, with hair matted like dead grass and a putrid stench rising from his body. He looked like a vengeful demon that had crawled straight out of hell.It was Harry. Somehow, he had managed to escape from the equally brutal training camp Tanya had sent him to.Clutched in his hand was a knife he had gotten from somewhere. Rust covered the blade, yet the light still reflected menacingly against it.Harry fixed his bloodshot eyes on Tanya, who stood at the front of the crowd, just as stunned as everyone else. His face twisted with a grotesque mixture of love, hatred, jealousy, and madness. He advanced toward her step by step, screaming like a madman, "I loved you so much, Tanya! I waited for you for years! Why wouldn't you choose me? Why would you rather marry that worthless loser and even have that bastard with him?"His voice

The last trace of vitality drained from Tanya's face when she heard my words. Gripping my arm, she shook her head violently. "No! We're not divorcing! Bryan, we're not doing that!"As if I were the last lifeline within reach of a drowning person, she clung to my emaciated body, sobbing and pleading incoherently."Can't we start over? Please? I know I messed up—I really do! I'll make it up to you! From now on, I'll treat you right. We'll have another child. I'll love them just as much as I loved Melanie! Please?"I let her hold me, my body as rigid and cold as a stone.Only after her sobs had subsided a little did I speak. My voice was almost cruel in its calmness. "It's too late, Tanya. After everything they did to me at that training camp, I'm already ruined."I didn't spell out what I meant by "I'm already ruined", but the implication was clear enough. I could no longer have sex.Tanya's arms stiffened around me. She looked up at me in disbelief, tears in her eyes. The last gli

When I opened my eyes, my mind was still hazy.Tanya practically threw herself at my bedside, grabbing my arm with a monstrous grip. Her eyes were wide, bloodshot, and wild with agitation."I know now, Bryan! I know everything!"She shook me violently. "It was Harry! That bastard was behind it all! That son of a bitch was the one pulling the strings! He secretly paid off those people at the training camp to torture you and Melanie!"He worked her to death! He killed Melanie! It was him! It was all him!"Her voice broke with sobs. "Did you hear me? It wasn't me! I swear I never meant for any of this to happen! He deceived me! I was blinded by my own foolishness, and I believed every damn lie he told me!"I had no idea they'd abuse you at that camp! I didn't know Melanie would die!"Tanya seized my shoulders, forcing me to look at her. Tears streamed down her face in fat, glistening drops. "Bryan, look me in the eyes! Please, believe me! I'm begging you!"I know I was wrong—I rea

I lay feverish in my hospital bed, drifting in and out of consciousness. The bleak, oppressive shadows of the training camp kept flashing before my eyes, along with Melanie's face growing paler and more gaunt with each passing day…"Get up!"The hospital room door was shoved open.Tanya strode in, her expression as apathetic as ever. She didn't even spare a glance at my flushed cheeks or my frail condition.Instead, she marched straight to my bedside, grabbed my arm, and yanked me out of bed."Come with me!"Her grip was firm, leaving no room for argument. My head spun from the sudden movement. My body was so weak that I could barely stand, and I slumped helplessly against her grip."Where are we going?""Grandma's dying. She wants to see you one last time."There wasn't a trace of emotion in Tanya's voice, only impatience. She practically dragged me out of my hospital room and hauled me, stumbling, into the ICU where Grandma lay.Grandma lay on the bed, barely clinging to l

I was left alone in the hospital room. I lay back down on the bed and stared blankly at the ceiling. It was a sea of white, so much like Melanie's face when she passed away. After months of brutal training and prolonged starvation, every last trace of color was gone from her cheeks. She lay on that hard, narrow bed, so emaciated that she was little more than skin and bones. Her face was as pale as parchment paper. Even breathing had become a struggle, yet she still summoned the last of her strength to clutch my hand."Dad, I really wish… I could see Mom…" she wheezed, struggling to catch her breath. "I've lost weight. I really have. 30 pounds! Even the instructor said I'm pretty now… If only Mom could see me now… She would finally like me."Choking back my sobs, I nodded. My heart felt as though it was being repeatedly twisted with a knife, but I couldn't utter a word.Melanie looked at me and whispered, "I'm sorry, Dad. I don't think I can stay with you anymore…"She tried to s

It was as if I hadn't heard Tanya's question at all. I stared blankly at the stark white ceiling, stubbornly repeating myself."Don't worry, Tanya. Once we divorce, I'll take it with me and disappear. I swear I won't interfere in your life with Mr. Lieberman ever again. You'll never have to see me—"A vicious slap across my face cut me off mid-sentence.Tanya's eyes were bloodshot. She lunged at me and clamped both hands around my throat, continuing to demand an answer. "I'm asking you what you meant! What ashes? Whose ashes?"She shook my head violently, her voice shrill with fury. "You're vile! How dare you curse Melanie with words like that? Huh? Answer me! Is she such an eyesore to you that you want her dead? Is that it?"Suffocation overwhelmed me instantly. The terror of being on the verge of death haunted me again, more vivid and intense than when my heart failed me earlier.I was too weak to fight back. All I could manage was a few broken sounds as my hands instinctively
