Chapter 5

作者: Bright Lights
In the comments section, there was one reply where Cara referred to herself as Warren's girlfriend.

Everything she had done for Warren now, she had once done for me. She was having such a good time that she probably wouldn't be back anytime soon.

Just as I was heading to my usual restaurant with the divorce decree, intending to celebrate by myself, I unexpectedly heard laughter and conversation from Cara's family and Warren.

Inside the private dining room, Cara's mother, Daisy Brown, held Warren's hand affectionately and looked at Cara.

She said, "Listen to me. Don't miss out on a good man like Warren. Hurry up and divorce Julian. All these years, he's been mediocre at the company and never amounted to much. He's been living off you, like a useless freeloader. I can't even hold my head up when I go out to play poker with my friends.

"I've heard Warren is very outstanding. Not only is he capable at work, but he's also popular at the company. Sometimes, he can even keep an eye on things you don't notice. If I had such a capable son-in-law, I'd be proud to tell everyone."

Through the crack in the door, I saw Warren lower his head shyly while carefully observing Cara's reaction.

She remained silent for two seconds before hesitantly lifting her glass to take a sip. "Julian and I have been married for ten years. If we divorced now, people will talk."

She didn't explain why I had supposedly never amounted to much all these years. Nor did she explain whose shoulders Warren had stepped on to obtain those achievements and projects.

I clenched my fists and was about to push the door open when Cara's younger brother, Carl Lavigne, spoke from inside.

"What are you afraid of, Cara? People get divorced left and right these days. Forget ten years. People can still get divorced whenever they want after spending 20 years together.

"I don't want Julian as my brother-in-law. He's so embarrassing. My classmates always make fun of me behind my back for having a freeloader brother-in-law."

"Exactly." Cara's younger sister, Carly Lavigne, chimed in. "Why don't you just marry Warren? He's way better than Julian. I don't want my classmates laughing at me again when college starts."

The only reason Carl and Carly had gotten into college was that I had constantly helped them find tutors, contacted educational institutions on their behalf, and even personally tutored them in their coursework.

Now that they had made it through college applications, they turned around and said I wasn't good enough.

I chuckled coldly and thought how expected it was that the most ungrateful people were all from one family. Even their excuses for looking down on me were identical.

They all thought I was an embarrassment. But they seemed to have forgotten that back when I was investing money and effort into the company, Daisy constantly praised me as the most wonderful son-in-law she could ever have.

Whenever she met an acquaintance outside, she couldn't wait to sing my praises and tell everyone that Cara was so fortunate to have married me.

Now that the company was thriving and Cara's net worth had risen accordingly, they turned their backs on me right away.

I reached up and pushed the door open.

Then, I instructed the server who had been leading me to my room. "There's no need to get me another private room. I'll just eat here."

Upon hearing my voice, everyone turned to look.

Without exception, shock appeared on all of their faces. Cara lifted her glass to conceal her awkwardness, though the flash of tension in her eyes did not escape me.

A moment later, she recovered and questioned me with a frown. "Shouldn't you be at the company handling work? What are you doing here?"

Judging by the puzzled look on her face, she still didn't know that I had already resigned.

But on the day I resigned, the employees had been gossiping everywhere. I didn't believe for a second that they hadn't passed the news on to Warren.

Cara spent every day attached to him. How could she not know?

Even if Warren had intentionally concealed it, HR still had to report the whole resignation process to her via email. So, there was no way she could have been unaware.

If it had been Warren, who was someone she cherished, she probably would have noticed immediately.

I met her gaze and answered calmly, "I resigned. I can go wherever I want."

"Who gave you permission to resign?" Cara demanded instinctively, showing no concern whatsoever for why I had resigned.

Cara recounted miserably, "I could only cut my losses and turn Warren over to the police. The company is a complete mess now. Even if you won't help me, can't you come back for the company's sake? Half of your life's work is in it too."Julian, you're all I have left now."As she spoke, she wore an expression of immense regret. "If only I had listened to you back then and fired Warren, maybe none of this would have happened. You're responsible too. You knew Warren wasn't a good guy. Why didn't you keep exposing him and insist on revealing his true nature?"Hearing the sudden accusation, I laughed. How many times had I exposed him? How many pieces of evidence had I put right in front of her? Which one of those had she ever believed?I retorted, "Stop fooling yourself. No matter how many times I insisted, you would still have chosen to believe Warren without hesitation. You never would have believed me, would you? You always thought his life was difficult, so you instinctively sympa

Whenever I wanted to take a break, Cara always found some excuse to tell me to keep going. It wasn't until much later that I realized my perseverance had bought her time to go on dates with Warren. While they were out together, I was sitting in front of the keyboard, typing furiously away and working myself to the bone.It was ridiculous. Now, it was finally time for me to take a break for my own sake. After sending me a few messages, Cara went quiet again. That had always been the extent of her patience and determination.Just when I thought things had finally ended between us, I unexpectedly received a call from her on the night my flower shop opened.I had just wrapped the last bouquet when Cara's name suddenly appeared on my screen. I had no intention of answering, but the ribbon from the bouquet accidentally brushed the answer button. The call connected because of the phone's laggy system."Hello, are you Ms. Lavigne's husband? She's passed out drunk at our bar. Could you

Cara didn't think much of it and handed me a slice of cake.I didn't take it, saying, "No thanks. I'm allergic to dairy cream."With that much frosting, it was obvious it had been chosen for Warren's tastes. She awkwardly smiled and set it down.I glanced at the time and gestured toward the clock. "If you have something to say, just say it. I want to get some rest. I have a train to catch tomorrow."She suddenly looked up and asked, "Where are you going?"Seeing the reluctance in her eyes, I swallowed before answering, "Back to my hometown.""Then I'll go with you. I'll buy a ticket right now." Cara pulled out her phone and opened a ticket-booking app.For a moment, I couldn't understand what she was trying to do.Taking a deep breath, I said, "Once I go back, I'm not coming here again. There's no need for you to follow me."Her finger paused above the payment button. Only then did she realize that I was leaving for good.Back when I first came to this city, it was because of

"He grew up surrounded by rumors and gossip, and yet you're using such underhanded tactics to harm him. How can you be so heartless?" Cara accused.Once again, I didn't say a single word. Even so, Cara placed all the blame on me."Did Warren really have such a hard life growing up?" Carl and Carly asked curiously.Cara patiently explained Warren's past to Daisy and the Lavigne siblings, occasionally glaring at me.They instantly felt a lot of sympathy for him."My gosh! When did Julian become such a vicious person? Warren is already sensitive and insecure by nature, and he still tried to harm him!"As Cara talked about Warren's experiences of being bullied, I saw her eyes soften with pity. But all of that had been fabricated by Warren. It was merely a way to cover up the fact that he had once bullied others and to paint himself as a victim.I had investigated the matter long ago and even placed the evidence right in front of Cara. Not only did she refuse to believe me, but she

I was definitely taking the car back. As for the savings accumulated over the past ten years, we each got half of those according to the law. It was the same for the company shares."We should still check. If he's lying to us, we'll suffer a huge loss," Daisy urged.Cara hesitated for a few seconds before suddenly looking at me as if she had thought of something. Feeling impatient with her slow response, Daisy took the phone from her and began checking herself.Within a few minutes, both the bank and the company's finance department had called back. Not a single cent of Cara's assets was missing.Seeing that everything had been made clear, I prepared to leave."Oh, right. Warren is driving my car. Please have it cleaned and returned to me. It's already been sold," I said.I had already found a buyer the night before.Just as I pulled open the door, Cara suddenly spoke."Wait."I thought she still had questions. But what she said next, however, left me in disbelief. She paused

Cara froze. As her gaze landed on the divorce decree in front of her, she looked surprised. The others exchanged glances and instantly looked delighted, especially Carl and Carly."Why didn't you tell us, Cara? We were even discussing with Mom how to persuade you to get divorced. This is great! We're going to have a new brother-in-law!"Daisy's anger also subsided considerably. The look she gave me was less disdainful, and she even started blaming Cara. She complained, "Cara, you should've told me you got divorced. You made me waste so much of my breath to convince you."Cara snapped out of it and immediately denied it. "I didn't divorce him.""Then this must be a fake decree. He brought a fake divorce decree to scare you. Does he really think you can't live without him? Haha!"Carl and Carly burst into laughter. Warren laughed as well.Cara snatched the divorce decree from me and tore it apart in front of everyone. She scattered the pieces at my feet like trash."Julian, you

Hearing that, Daisy looked surprised. The moment she realized I was unemployed, she immediately chimed in, "Julian, have you got no shame at all?
