Chapter 1

After I sent the message, the conversation in the room kept going.

"I'm betting the newest Chanel items that Samuel will agree to the divorce."

"I don't think he will. He loves Penny way too much. There's no way he'd go through with it."

"Oh, please. He's just a simp for her. He always listens to her."

"For anyone who loses, it'll be a pair of Chanel items each." Penelope Rivera's voice came through, cool and crisp.

The room erupted into laughter. I hurried out of there as fast as I could.

Just then, a message showed up on my phone.

"Seriously?" it said.

"Yeah."

Six months ago, Penelope set her sights on Theodore Schneider, some Z-list actor.

She went all in by pouring resources into him and buying him cars and mansions in Acetropolis. His downtown villa was packed with sports cars he had always dreamed of.

Yet he still kept her at arm's length. She stayed patient as she pursued him day after day. Still, he firmly insisted that he wouldn't be her secret lover.

Donning that season's hottest limited release, Theodore flushed red with anger as he shouted, "Penny, I know you've been treating me like a king. I'm into you too, but I'm not gonna be 'the other man'!"

Having been in the business world for years, Penelope had seen countless men. Most of them practically threw themselves at her, knowing how rich she was.

Theodore, on the other hand, was different. He had his principles. No matter how much money she threw his way, he still stood his ground, which amused her.

She was so intrigued that she tossed me aside, again and again. I could still remember the first time she did it.

It was my birthday, and Penelope had actually come home for once. Dressed to the nines, she was holding my favorite kind of cake. Right when I was making a wish, her phone rang all of a sudden. She got up to take the call and promised she'd be right back to celebrate with me.

Yet, after she got off the call, she turned to leave, claiming it was urgent. I believed her.

After ten minutes, a friend request popped up on my phone. The person didn't send a message, even after I accepted the request.

Curious, I tapped into the person's profile. His entire feed was filled with photos of him and Penelope. That was when I realized she was cheating on me.

I went to her, phone in hand, demanding an answer. Yet, she claimed that they were just friends and nothing more.

I didn't believe her, but she said that I was being a nuisance. "Does it matter? You'll always be my husband. Isn't that enough?"

I was stunned. Was it that nothing else mattered as long as I was her husband in name? Hadn't she said she loved me the most?

My heart ached as if something was stuck in there. Yet, I barely had the strength to even argue.

This persisted until she handed me the divorce papers in a room full of people. "Just sign them for show. It's to keep Teddy happy."

I signed them without saying a word and walked out.

...

She came home later, reeking of alcohol as always. "Why aren't you sleeping yet?"

I looked up at her. That was the first time I spoke to her that day. "I'm not tired."

"Even so, you still need to sleep. The doctor said you need more rest."

I didn't spare her a glance. I just turned and headed for the bedroom.

"Wait." She stopped me. "I need to talk to you… tomorrow."

After dinner, Wendy picked up her phone and dialed home. While I was out on the balcony, I overheard her calmly say, "Dad, it's me… Yeah… We ran into Penelope today."On the other end, Mr. Hamilton sounded tense. "What's wrong? Is Sam okay?""There are marks on his wrist." Her tone remained composed, but I could hear the underlying iciness. "She caused a scene at the cafe and splashed coffee on me."Mrs. Hamilton grabbed the phone, panic rising in her voice. "What? How's Samuel? Is he hurt? Is he okay? Does he need to go to the hospital?""Mom, calm down," Wendy reassured. "He's fine; he's just kind of shaken. I gave him some warm milk, and he's feeling much better now.""That poor young man…" Mrs. Hamilton sounded heartbroken. "Can he talk right now? I'd like to say a few words to him.""Give him some time to rest first." Wendy glanced toward the balcony. "By the way, Dad, aren't the Riveras bidding on that Easturean project?"Mr. Hamilton caught on immediately. "I see. I'll ge

Wendy brought me to meet her business partners."This is my husband," she said, holding my hand as she introduced me confidently.I greeted everyone around me. No one looked at me with curiosity or judgment. They just spoke to me as if I were anyone else.Back when I was with Penelope, everyone around her knew I was autistic. She claimed that this was to protect me. In reality, though, no one wanted to talk to me at all because they knew I had autism. Slowly, it made my condition worse.Wendy's voice made me snap out of my thoughts. "Stay here and wait for me, Sam. I'm going to the restroom."I nodded and found a seat at the cafe. Just as I sat down, I saw Penelope. The moment she spotted me, she shoved the door open and stormed over to my table. Her nails nearly penetrated my skin when she grabbed my wrist."You sure have the guts, huh, Samuel Graham?" Her shrill voice drew stares from customers around us. "Fresh out of a divorce, and you're already clinging to the Hamiltons?"

I thought things were finally over between me and Penelope. Clearly, Penelope thought otherwise. She posted a photo on her Instagram. It was of her kissing Theodore on a yacht deck. The caption said, "Love you".I kept scrolling. The comment section was buzzing."Penny finally went public!""Isn't that the viral hottie lately?""Ms. Rivera has great taste! When's the wedding?"Amanda's comments caught my eye the most. "Penny has finally found true love! I hope a certain someone sees this.""That autistic guy? He's no match," someone replied."Exactly. He can't even string a full sentence together.""Is Penny serious this time?"Penelope herself replied to the last comment. "Definitely."More comments poured in. "When are we getting invited to the wedding?"I quietly turned off my phone and went back to tending my plants. I heard Wendy's footsteps coming from the bathroom. Accompanying her was the faint scent of her shampoo.Seeing that I was upset, she cupped my dirt-smear

With Wendy's help, I adjusted to life overseas in no time.I carried a cake home. Lately, her work had eased up, and she often got home earlier than I did. I counted the steps as I walked up the stairs, remembering how she mentioned she'd make red wine beef stew tonight.Just as I slid the key into the lock, the door opened from the inside.Wendy stood in the doorway, wearing my favorite beige loungewear. She held a pot of white gardenias that were about to bloom."Gardenias!" I blurted out, nearly dropping the cake box.The familiar aroma washed over me, and I reached out carefully to touch the white buds. The delicate texture of the petals beneath my finger brought back a certain memory. I recalled how Penelope had hurled my carefully nurtured jasmine out of the balcony."For you." Wendy leaned against the doorframe, the sunset showering her in gold.I looked at her, my throat tightening. "Are you sure?""Why wouldn't I be?" she replied with a smile as she took the cake box f

At the boarding gate, Wendy took out a small metal tin. "Peppermints," she said, unwrapping one. "Suck on it so that your ears won't hurt during takeoff."I popped it into my mouth and let the coolness spread across my tongue. As the plane began to move, she took my hand."Get some rest." She dimmed the reading light. "I'll wake you up when we land."Her lashes cast tiny shadows under the dim lights, reminding me of that fern at home that hated the sun.I closed my eyes and heard her softly tell the flight attendant, "Could you adjust the heat? My husband's afraid of the cold."Her voice had returned to her usual gentle tone.My phone buzzed in my pocket. I didn't need to check to know who it was. Penelope had sent her last message the night before. "How long do you think she'll put up with you?"I hadn't replied. At this moment, I decided to shove my phone to the bottom of my backpack.…When the morning light in Baurisse shone in through the curtains, I was watering the

As soon as Penelope, the heiress of the Rivera family, got divorced, the news spread through high society like wildfire."Have you heard? Penelope Rivera got divorced!""Of course. They just finished signing the papers last week.""Honestly, good for her. Marrying someone with autism? That's just setting herself up for misery. That guy can't even socialize like a normal human being, let alone run the family business.""Still, that's harsh of Penelope. I heard he's not in great shape. Now that they're divorced, no one's taking care of him.""You don't get it. Families like the Riveras can't tolerate a son-in-law who can't even attend a gala. This was bound to happen sooner or later.""The marriage should've ended long ago, actually. They're no match for each other. That's just asking for trouble."…Meanwhile, in the private lounge of Penelope's exclusive club, her childhood friend, Amanda Lane, burst into the room, holding her phone up."Penny! Look!" Amanda shoved the phone i
