Chapter 2

Author: Year on Year
Howard cut in. "Mark, don't blame Linda. It was my idea. If you're angry, take it out on me."

I turned to him with a short laugh. "Don't worry. I'll deal with you in a minute."

Linda immediately stepped between us. "If you're mad, be mad at me. Leave him out of it."

Watching her rush to protect him, I suddenly found the whole thing absurd. After six years of marriage, I was starting to wonder if I knew my wife at all.

My phone buzzed in my pocket.

It was a notification from the bank. The business had unexpectedly taken off today, bringing in tens of thousands in profit.

I'd come home excited, planning to surprise Linda with the good news.

Now the notification felt like some kind of sick joke.

I slipped my phone back into my pocket and looked at her. "Linda, whose name is on the deed to that house?"

Her expression turned wary. She said nothing.

Howard answered instead. "Mine. Linda gave me the money, so obviously the house is in my name."

"Good." I nodded. "Since we're all family, Linda and I can move in with you. We're renting anyway. Might as well save ourselves the rent."

Howard's expression changed. "What? No. It's my house. You can't just move in."

I looked straight at him. "And whose money did you use to buy it?"

Howard faltered for a second. "Linda gave me that money. Once she gave it to me, it became mine."

Linda quickly backed him up. "Mark, come on. Howard finally has a place of his own. How could we move in with him?"

"Why couldn't we?" I turned to her. "You paid for the house, and you and I are married. Why shouldn't we live there?"

Linda's expression grew uncomfortable. "Howard's going to get married someday. He needs the house for when he starts a family. It wouldn't be appropriate for us to live there."

I let out a humorless laugh. "So what would be appropriate? We keep throwing money away on rent while you keep sneaking our savings to your brother behind my back?"

Linda's face darkened. "Sneaking? Don't make it sound like I stole something. That's our family's money. What's wrong with me spending some of it on my own brother? Mark, you don't have to make it sound so ugly."

"Our family's money?" I finally lost my grip on my temper. "Half of that money came from me driving Uber until two or three in the morning for the last six years. While you were home asleep, I was out there taking ride after ride just to put money into the account.

"And now you're standing there telling me that money was yours to give away?"

Linda took a step back at my outburst. But she recovered quickly, lifting her chin as she stared me down. "Why are you yelling? The money's already gone. The house has already been bought. What good is making a scene now? It's done, Mark. What are you going to do about it?"

She sounded remarkably confident. Because as far as she was concerned, those were the facts.

The money was gone. The house had been purchased. The papers had been signed. There was no undoing any of it.

In Linda's mind, there was nothing I could do.

She probably thought I'd react the same way I always had. Stay angry for a few days, then eventually let it go.

It had happened plenty of times before. She would slip Howard three thousand dollars here and five thousand dollars there. I would find out, we would argue, and in the end, I was always the one who gave in.

She clearly expected this time to be no different.

The money was already spent.

I couldn't possibly do anything about it now.

I looked at the certainty on her face and felt exhausted. "Linda, I want a divorce."

Not long after I moved into my new place, I met Claire Sullivan. She was the project manager for one of our clients. The first time we met was at a project kickoff meeting. She represented the client, and she came prepared with a long list of demanding requirements. By the time she was halfway through, several people on my team were already looking tense. Claire noticed. She simply smiled and looked across the table at me."Mark, I know we're asking a lot. But if this were easy, we wouldn't have hired your company to do it."That one sentence immediately changed my impression of her. After the meeting, we went out for dinner together. She ordered sensibly. A few entrees for the table and nothing excessive. When the check came, she reached for her wallet and suggested we split it. I told her I would take care of it.She didn't argue or make a show of insisting. She just smiled. "Alright. Then dinner's on me next time." And there was a next time. For our second date,

Howard forged a supply contract and posed as a building-materials supplier to scam another construction company out of a 150-thousand-dollar deposit. The whole scheme was laughably amateurish. The company's accounting department spotted the discrepancies that same afternoon and immediately called the police.Howard was arrested at the train station. He'd bought a ticket to a city hundreds of miles south and had been planning to disappear. He hadn't even told his own mother he was leaving. When Karen got the call from the police, she fainted on the spot.Howard was eventually sentenced to four years in prison. The fraud involved a substantial amount of money, and he showed little remorse. The investigators also uncovered several questionable financial dealings from his past. Taken together, it was enough to earn him a lengthy sentence. After Howard went to prison, Karen fell apart.Linda lasted less than two months at the grocery store in her hometown. At home, Karen cried cons

I was taken aback."How did you get my number?"The woman gave a bitter laugh. "Howard used to hand out your business card to everyone. He'd tell people you were his brother-in-law and that if anything went wrong, all they had to do was call you, and you'd take care of it."I rubbed my forehead. "So why are you calling me?" She hesitated before answering.Howard owed her 80 thousand dollars and had been dodging her for months. Back when Linda was still around, he kept promising that his sister would pay the money back for him. But now that Linda had moved back to her hometown, Howard had simply disappeared."Mr. Dwayne, I'm not asking you to pay his debt. I just wanted to know if you have any idea where Howard is. I'm taking him to court, and I need an address so he can be served the papers." I gave her the address of the last place I knew Howard had rented. After hanging up, I leaned back in my chair, stared at the ceiling, and let out a quiet laugh.Howard had finally reac

The handwriting was shaky and uneven, and a few of the words had been blurred by tear stains.I stared at that sentence for a long time without saying anything. That afternoon, I went to the grocery store downstairs. I slowly pushed a cart through the aisles, tossing in whatever caught my eye, from imported snacks I'd always thought were too expensive to a couple of packs of beer—things I'd never let myself splurge on before. By the time I reached the register, my cart was overflowing. The cashier was a young woman. After ringing everything up, she glanced at the pile of groceries and smiled. "That's quite a haul.""Just moved into a new place," I said. "Figured I'd celebrate.""Well, congratulations."I thanked her and walked out carrying two heavy bags. The sun was warm, and a light breeze stirred the air.Summer was almost here. That weekend, I invited Frank and a few of the guys out to a lake beyond the city for a day of fishing. We set up several rods along the bank,

On Monday morning, I was just about to leave for work when Linda showed up at my door. Her hair was a mess. Her face looked pale and exhausted, and her lips were dry and cracked. The moment she saw me, her eyes filled with tears. "Mark."Her voice was so hoarse that I could barely hear her. I looked at her but didn't step aside to let her in. "What are you doing here?"Linda bit her lip as tears began rolling down her cheeks. "I… I really don't have anywhere else to go." Then she told me what had happened.Karen had packed up Linda's things and told her to go stay with Howard. So Linda had dragged her suitcase all the way to Howard's house and stood outside, knocking for several minutes. But Howard wasn't the one who answered. His new girlfriend was.The woman stood squarely in the doorway, making it perfectly clear that Linda staying there would be "inconvenient".Howard was standing right behind her. He didn't say a word.Linda told me that she'd stood there staring

I set down my fork and took a sip of my drink. "Frank, if Howard comes to you again, don't do him any favors on my account."Frank paused, then raised his glass with a grin. "Good. That's all I needed to hear."After dinner, I'd had enough to drink that I wasn't about to drive, so I called a driver to take me home in my new car. We pulled up outside my building. I got out and had barely reached the lobby entrance when someone suddenly stepped out from behind the landscaping.I instinctively took a step back. Then I recognized him.Howard.His shirt was wrinkled, his hair was a mess, and there were dark circles beneath his eyes. He looked like he hadn't slept properly in days."Mark." His voice had an ingratiating edge to it. "Can you give me ten minutes? That's all I'm asking—just ten minutes." I looked at him. "We have nothing to talk about." Panic flashed across his face. He reached for my arm, but I stepped aside before he could touch me. "Mark, I know you hate me, but y
