Chapter 3

Author: Bright Light
The crowd came apart.

"He's set on putting that old man in an early grave."

"Seventy years I've lived here. I've never seen a son this shameless."

Thomas's cane shook in his grip.

"If your mother could see you now, she'd come up out of her grave to curse you!"

Ray Cole slapped his thigh.

"A man like that has no business fishing out of our harbor."

He called across the room to Dale Ferris.

"Pull his offshore license. As of today Jack Sutton doesn't set foot on a boat out of this harbor."

Dale nodded right away. "I'll file it this afternoon. We don't need his kind here."

The next few days were about as bad as days get.

Ray read a statement over the co-op's radio channel every morning and every evening, and by the second day other people had started reading their own.

"Jack Sutton has walked out on his family and repaid the wife who saved his father with cruelty..."

"Every decent person in this harbor has an obligation to condemn behavior that poisons a community..."

Somebody nailed a copy of it to the harbor office door, and it stayed there.

An older woman spat at me on the road.

"Ungrateful trash."

It caught me on the cheek.

A group of boys hid behind a wall and threw stones. Most of them hit my back. One caught the back of my head hard enough to black out my vision for a second.

When I got home there was one word painted across my front door in red. MONSTER.

The windows were smashed in. Rotten vegetables and dead fish were scattered all over the yard.

A reporter came out from the county paper to interview Linda, the harbor's new hero.

He set her up on the dock with the boats behind her and asked her to walk him through it.

Linda cried beautifully for him.

"The wind was screaming and the waves were so high. There was only one life jacket. Jack's young and he's strong. His father's an old man. I knew if I didn't get to him, he was going to die."

"So you gave the life jacket to your father-in-law without hesitating."

"Yes. I wasn't thinking about myself at all. I just knew I had to save Dad."

The reporter turned and spotted me standing back from the crowd.

"Is that Jack Sutton?"

Ray Cole nodded and dropped his voice. "That's him. The ungrateful one."

The reporter came over with his pencil already moving.

"Mr. Sutton, is it true you intend to divorce the woman who saved your father's life?"

I met his eyes.

"Yes."

He frowned. "Are you jealous that your wife went for your father instead of you?"

I smiled at him.

"Of course I'm jealous. My father's got a daughter-in-law so devoted she'd trade her own husband's life for his. Who wouldn't envy a blessing like that?"

"What are you saying about me?" Linda's face went scarlet. Her whole body was shaking.

"You're spreading filth!" Frank came at me swinging, and it took three men to hold him back.

By the next morning the radio had new material.

"Jack Sutton has openly admitted he's jealous of his wife's courage..."

"That kind of small, selfish thinking has no place in this harbor..."

That evening my oldest friend, Ben Marsh, sat down beside me on the front steps and handed me a bottle.

"Give them what they want, brother. Apologize."

He sighed.

"A wife like that is hard to come by. You let her go, you'll regret it the rest of your life."

I looked at the man I'd learned to fish beside, who'd taken every scraped knee and every hiding right along with me.

"You think I'm wrong too?"

"I'm not trying to hurt you," he said. "But your dad's an old man. What was Linda supposed to do? You're taking it too personally."

I put my head down and laughed once. "You're right. I am taking it personally. I just can't stand my father."

She put every last piece of it on Victor. She was so afraid of being called the one who planned it that she laid out exactly how they'd schemed and exactly what each of them had done. She was still screaming that she was innocent when the door to the next holding area opened. Two deputies brought Victor out into the corridor. He'd heard every word. His face went dark and his bloodshot eyes locked onto her."You lying snake. Don't you dare put this on me."He threw himself against the bars."Who was it whispering in my ear every night that the old man was too sharp, that we'd never sleep easy until he was gone?"Who said do it in a storm, nobody questions a storm?"Who said it, Linda? A drunk old man drowning off his own boat, what could be more natural than that. Those were your words."She hadn't expected him to be standing there."You're lying. You wanted the Sutton property. You planned all of it."Victor laughed until it cracked."I wanted it? I didn't even know that

Victor and Linda were handed over to the county sheriff and taken in to the county jail.Linda begged for mercy the whole way. Victor never said a word.I went back to the old house, pulled up the floorboards, and opened the compartment underneath. The gold was still there, and so was my father's will. His handwriting swam in front of me.Jack, I put this gold away for the day you had a family of your own. I'm getting older and the sea doesn't always give back what it takes, so I'm leaving these instructions now. Be a good man, son, but don't let being good make you blind.Four lines, and my eyes were wet.A few days later somebody from the clerk's office came by to tell me the divorce had gone through. He also said Linda had been raising hell to see me.I went. She was in a shapeless gray jail uniform. Her hair was dry and tangled and dull. The moment she saw me through the bars she threw herself at them."I know I was wrong. Victor lied to me. He said if I helped him keep

Frank's lips were trembling."He's lying."The peddler ignored him."Bought a bottle of white hair dye off me too. Said he needed to look old so he could collect an inheritance out in a fishing village. He even asked whether the beard glue would hold if it got wet. I knew right then there was something wrong with him."The crowd came apart all over again. The whole thing had been a fraud from the first day.I couldn't hold myself back any longer. I got a fistful of that ugly beard and tore it off his face. The cheap adhesive took flecks of skin with it. He screamed, and a young, unfamiliar face came out from under the disguise.I grabbed his gray hair next. The roots underneath were black. He wasn't an old man at all. He was about my age.Linda sat where she'd fallen and didn't move. She knew it was finished.I walked over to the man everyone had been calling my father, and the hate in me was almost more than I could hold."How did my father die?"Victor flinched under the

The yard exploded.Linda's face went dead white."That's a lie!"Frank was shaking with it. "You rotten little liar. You'd make up something that filthy about your own wife and your own father just to get a divorce?""Made up?"I took a second, smaller oilskin package out of my coat and opened it slowly.Inside was an old cassette recorder and a tape. The second the two of them saw it, their faces came apart."You've all been demanding evidence from me for days."I slid the cassette in."Here it is."The speaker hissed with static. Then the sounds came, and two voices nobody in that yard could mistake."Frank, quieter. Somebody's going to hear us." Linda's voice, soft and breathless."Nobody's awake at this hour. Anyway, you like it like this. Don't pretend.""I'm serious. Listen to me. Once Jack goes back out, the storm comes in, and that bad net wraps around his legs the second the boat goes over...""It's handled. Once he's dead, the boat and the house are mine. So ar

Frank's face went from white to gray. Sweat came up across his forehead."That was decades ago. How's an old man supposed to remember every detail?""Is that right?"I turned back several pages in the ledger."There's an old Sutton rhyme too. It tells you where to set your nets in each season, and it's always gone straight from father to son."I raised my voice so the whole yard could hear me."Spring wind east, the silver schools rise. Three-foot waves, cast where the sunrise lies."Summer wind south, the warm shoals run. Whitecaps turn, cast toward the sun."I closed the ledger."Go on. Give us fall and winter.""I... I..." He stammered and nothing came out."Did hauling crates make you forget how to fish, too?"Linda threw herself at me."Have you got no decency in you at all? He's an old man, his memory's going, and you're tormenting him on purpose. Aren't you afraid of what God does to people like you?"That got to a few of them."Jack, his memory really isn't what

The yard went completely silent.Every person there was staring at me.I shook off the last of the hands on me and pulled an oilskin bundle out of my coat.I set it down, then rolled up my right sleeve."Sutton men have worked this water for four generations. When a Sutton son turns eighteen, he gets an anchor put on his right arm. It means that no matter how far the tide takes him, he's rooted here and he comes home."The dark blue anchor stood out sharp on my skin in the daylight."My father gave me this one on my eighteenth birthday. He dipped the needle himself and he made every mark himself. He told me that anchor was what made a man a Sutton."I took a step toward Frank."Are you going to show everybody your arm?"The blood went out of his face. His right arm slid behind his back. His lips moved for a second before he forced out a smile."I hauled freight on that pier to pay for your house. A crate opened my arm up and left a scar you wouldn't believe. That tattoo's be
