Chapter 4

Author: Bright Light
My refusal to see reason finally used up whatever patience the old men in this harbor had left.

Thomas called an open hearing outside the old Sutton boathouse and told everyone to be there.

The yard in front of it was packed shoulder to shoulder.

Ray Cole stood up on the loading platform with a sheet of paper in his hand.

"Jack Sutton. Do you admit what you've done?"

I stood in the middle of the crowd and said nothing.

"Your wife saved your father's life. Instead of thanking her, you filed for divorce.

"You're walking that old man straight into his grave."

Linda knelt down near the platform, wiping at her face.

"We've been married six years, Jack. Have you forgotten all of it?

"Have you forgotten our first winter? You came in off the water burning up with fever, and I sat by the stove all night making you tea and broth. I stayed awake until my eyes were red.

"Have you forgotten last year, when that line tore your hand open? I warmed the ointment between my palms before I put it on because I was afraid the cold would hurt you."

Her voice broke on every one of them. The older women around her were dabbing their eyes.

When they turned to look at me, the contempt had hardened into something closer to hate.

"That poor girl picked the wrong husband."

"Why doesn't lightning just take him?"

My father beat his fists against his chest and sobbed.

"This is my fault. I failed to teach my son how to be a human being.

"I wrecked my back earning the money for his house and his wedding.

"Now he's grown and he's decided his old father is dead weight."

The insults came at me from every direction.

"Rotten little bastard!"

"Ungrateful trash!"

"He's not even human!"

Thomas leveled his cane at me.

"Today you're going to stand in front of your father and your wife and apologize, and you're going to mean it."

Several young men rushed me before he'd finished the sentence. They locked their hands around my shoulders.

I turned my head and saw Ben among them.

The tired concern he'd shown me on my front steps was gone. All that was left was the blank certainty of a man doing justice.

He drew his leg back and kicked in the hollow behind my knee.

"Down!"

My leg buckled. I threw both hands out and caught myself before I hit the dirt.

Somebody kicked me again.

Thomas raised his cane.

"You won't do it, I'll teach you manners in your dead mother's place!"

I was inches off the ground.

With everything I had left, I tore free of them and shouted it out over the whole crowd.

"That man is not my father!"

She put every last piece of it on Victor. She was so afraid of being called the one who planned it that she laid out exactly how they'd schemed and exactly what each of them had done. She was still screaming that she was innocent when the door to the next holding area opened. Two deputies brought Victor out into the corridor. He'd heard every word. His face went dark and his bloodshot eyes locked onto her."You lying snake. Don't you dare put this on me."He threw himself against the bars."Who was it whispering in my ear every night that the old man was too sharp, that we'd never sleep easy until he was gone?"Who said do it in a storm, nobody questions a storm?"Who said it, Linda? A drunk old man drowning off his own boat, what could be more natural than that. Those were your words."She hadn't expected him to be standing there."You're lying. You wanted the Sutton property. You planned all of it."Victor laughed until it cracked."I wanted it? I didn't even know that

Victor and Linda were handed over to the county sheriff and taken in to the county jail.Linda begged for mercy the whole way. Victor never said a word.I went back to the old house, pulled up the floorboards, and opened the compartment underneath. The gold was still there, and so was my father's will. His handwriting swam in front of me.Jack, I put this gold away for the day you had a family of your own. I'm getting older and the sea doesn't always give back what it takes, so I'm leaving these instructions now. Be a good man, son, but don't let being good make you blind.Four lines, and my eyes were wet.A few days later somebody from the clerk's office came by to tell me the divorce had gone through. He also said Linda had been raising hell to see me.I went. She was in a shapeless gray jail uniform. Her hair was dry and tangled and dull. The moment she saw me through the bars she threw herself at them."I know I was wrong. Victor lied to me. He said if I helped him keep

Frank's lips were trembling."He's lying."The peddler ignored him."Bought a bottle of white hair dye off me too. Said he needed to look old so he could collect an inheritance out in a fishing village. He even asked whether the beard glue would hold if it got wet. I knew right then there was something wrong with him."The crowd came apart all over again. The whole thing had been a fraud from the first day.I couldn't hold myself back any longer. I got a fistful of that ugly beard and tore it off his face. The cheap adhesive took flecks of skin with it. He screamed, and a young, unfamiliar face came out from under the disguise.I grabbed his gray hair next. The roots underneath were black. He wasn't an old man at all. He was about my age.Linda sat where she'd fallen and didn't move. She knew it was finished.I walked over to the man everyone had been calling my father, and the hate in me was almost more than I could hold."How did my father die?"Victor flinched under the

The yard exploded.Linda's face went dead white."That's a lie!"Frank was shaking with it. "You rotten little liar. You'd make up something that filthy about your own wife and your own father just to get a divorce?""Made up?"I took a second, smaller oilskin package out of my coat and opened it slowly.Inside was an old cassette recorder and a tape. The second the two of them saw it, their faces came apart."You've all been demanding evidence from me for days."I slid the cassette in."Here it is."The speaker hissed with static. Then the sounds came, and two voices nobody in that yard could mistake."Frank, quieter. Somebody's going to hear us." Linda's voice, soft and breathless."Nobody's awake at this hour. Anyway, you like it like this. Don't pretend.""I'm serious. Listen to me. Once Jack goes back out, the storm comes in, and that bad net wraps around his legs the second the boat goes over...""It's handled. Once he's dead, the boat and the house are mine. So ar

Frank's face went from white to gray. Sweat came up across his forehead."That was decades ago. How's an old man supposed to remember every detail?""Is that right?"I turned back several pages in the ledger."There's an old Sutton rhyme too. It tells you where to set your nets in each season, and it's always gone straight from father to son."I raised my voice so the whole yard could hear me."Spring wind east, the silver schools rise. Three-foot waves, cast where the sunrise lies."Summer wind south, the warm shoals run. Whitecaps turn, cast toward the sun."I closed the ledger."Go on. Give us fall and winter.""I... I..." He stammered and nothing came out."Did hauling crates make you forget how to fish, too?"Linda threw herself at me."Have you got no decency in you at all? He's an old man, his memory's going, and you're tormenting him on purpose. Aren't you afraid of what God does to people like you?"That got to a few of them."Jack, his memory really isn't what

The yard went completely silent.Every person there was staring at me.I shook off the last of the hands on me and pulled an oilskin bundle out of my coat.I set it down, then rolled up my right sleeve."Sutton men have worked this water for four generations. When a Sutton son turns eighteen, he gets an anchor put on his right arm. It means that no matter how far the tide takes him, he's rooted here and he comes home."The dark blue anchor stood out sharp on my skin in the daylight."My father gave me this one on my eighteenth birthday. He dipped the needle himself and he made every mark himself. He told me that anchor was what made a man a Sutton."I took a step toward Frank."Are you going to show everybody your arm?"The blood went out of his face. His right arm slid behind his back. His lips moved for a second before he forced out a smile."I hauled freight on that pier to pay for your house. A crate opened my arm up and left a scar you wouldn't believe. That tattoo's be
