Chapter 2

Penulis: Fall Leaf
Before I could even close my laptop, Karina called.

I answered.

"Honey!" Karina cried. "He's still here. He's still walking around outside the door! I'm so scared!"

She was really good at acting.

In my previous life, that crying voice had fooled me completely.

"Where are you? Hurry home! Drive slowly on the way and be careful!"

It was those conflicting instructions—hurry up and slow down—had thrown me into a panic in my previous life. I had only wanted to get home as quickly as possible.

My voice remained calm. "Don't worry. I just called the security in our neighborhood.

"They're heading over now."

There was an obvious pause on the other end.

"Huh? You called security?"

"I also told them to bring their batons. Take another look through the peephole and send me a new video so I can confirm."

Karina's voice immediately became flustered. "I-I'm too scared! I don't dare open the door! It looks like he's watching me!

"Honey, don't worry about the security guards. Just come home quickly! I only want you here!"

She started whining sweetly.

"Okay. I'm going to the parking garage now."

I hung up. I started typing rapidly on the laptop.

I was a programmer.

Back in my previous life, I had hacked into the public security cameras outside our home because of a dispute with a neighbor.

I entered the code and bypassed the firewall.

The surveillance footage appeared on the screen.

My front door was completely deserted. There wasn't a single person in sight.

The streetlight illuminated everything clearly.

Even the curtains behind the familiar window had been left slightly open.

I could imagine Karina hiding behind that gap with her phone in hand while smugly waiting for news of my death.

I took a screenshot and sent it straight to Karina.

[Honey, there's nobody outside.]

[Maybe you were mistaken. I asked security to check too, and they said nobody was there.]

After I sent the message, Karina was silent for several seconds.

She immediately called me back. Her voice was panicked now, and the crying tone from earlier was completely gone.

"M-Maybe I saw it wrong.

"Honey, I'm sorry. I've been working too much lately. I must have been seeing things.

"You don't have to come back. Just keep working. I won't bother you."

She was desperate to end the call.

"I just missed you too much," she added.

"Okay. Go to bed early."

I pretended to believe her and hung up.

I then immediately called Tanya.

"Mike? What's wrong?"

"Help me check the call records between Karina and Harry for the past three months. Right now!"

Tanya paused for a moment. "Mike, did you and Karina have a fight?"

"Don't ask questions. Just do it. The sooner, the better."

I hung up. The hatred inside me was almost overflowing.

I recalled what had happened in my previous life.

The day after I died, Karina withdrew every dollar from our joint account. It was the money we'd been saving to buy a home in a good school district.

She didn't even leave anything for my parents.

Harry even comforted my parents, saying that he would treat Karina like his own sister and take care of her.

My parents cried tears of gratitude and thanked him for being such a good man.

'A good man?'

I wanted to see how long these two could keep up their little act.

Time passed quickly.A year later, I moved to another city.It was a coastal city in the south where the air was humid. It was far away from my hometown.I joined a new tech company and continued working as a programmer, but I was no longer the Mike who worked overtime until three in the morning.I signed up for a gym membership.Every day after work, instead of going home and collapsing onto the couch, I went to the gym and ran for an hour. There was something reassuring about the feeling of sweat soaking through my clothes.I picked up reading again. I read everything from technical books to literature.I even started learning to cook, but my cooking wasn't particularly good. When my coworkers invited me to go hiking, I went with them. When they invited me to go sailing on weekends, I went with them too.The man in the mirror was tanner and more muscular. My eyes no longer held the emptiness and exhaustion of my previous life.Tanya video-called me."Mike, you look gre

The agent's eyes lit up. "No problem! I guarantee it'll be sold within three days!"Three days later, the house was sold.I took the money and blocked Karina on every communication platform. There were more than a thousand photos of us on my phone. I deleted them one by one. When I reached the last photo, I stopped. It had been taken at the beach shortly after we got married. She had been smiling so sweetly.I tapped on the delete button.Everything was gone.I moved back in with my parents and temporarily shared a room with Tanya.Mom saw how much weight I'd lost, and her eyes welled with tears. "Mike, it's all in the past. We'll find you a better girl."Dad took a puff on his cigarette beside her and sighed. "Consider it a lesson learned."Tanya brought me a bowl of warm soup."Mike, have some soup."You've got me from now on."My nose stung. I accepted the bowl from her.I later went to Harry's hometown, a remote village. His parents were a simple, down-to-earth coup

After I walked out of the courtroom, Tanya followed me and slipped her arm through mine."Mike, let's go home. Shall we?""No."I turned to the attorney who had been waiting nearby. "Mr. Jackson, I need your help."Draft the divorce petition immediately."Luke Jackson nodded."Don't worry, Mr. Jerome."You're the innocent party, while Karina is clearly at fault for marital infidelity and involvement in criminal activity."My voice was cold. "I only have one request.""Go ahead.""Make sure she leaves with nothing."Luke hesitated. "Legally, she's still entitled to a portion of the marital assets–"I interrupted him. "Then make her pay compensation."Emotional distress, lost wages, and the psychological trauma she caused me."I don't want her to leave with a single dollar.""I understand. I'll do everything I can."Two weeks later, we were in civil court.Karina had hired an attorney as well. She was wearing a faded gray outfit. Her hair was frizzy and dull. She was cl

Karina’s plea was what finally pushed things over the edge.Harry, meanwhile, believed Karina was trying to dump all the blame on him.Meanwhile, the police found a pair of brake-line cutters in Harry's toolbox, and the tool marks matched perfectly. To make matters worse, technicians recovered several deleted chat messages from Harry's cloud storage. They had been sent by Karina.[He seems to be getting suspicious of me. What should I do?][Let's just do it. Follow your plan. Once he's dead, everything will be wiped clean.]Harry completely lost it when he saw Karina's messages. He could no longer keep up his so-called amnesia act."I'll confess!" He roared in the interrogation room."I did it! I cut the brakes! But Karina isn't getting away either! She was the one who urged me to do it!"When Karina learned that Harry had confessed and that the police had recovered her messages, she knew it was over.To save herself, she immediately turned on him."It was him! Harry lay in the intensive care unit for three days. When he finally woke up, the news the police brought me wasn't good."Mr. Jerome, Harry suffered a brain injury and is temporarily suffering from amnesia."He claims he doesn't remember anything related to the brakes."The evidence makes him a primary person of interest, but without a statement from him—and with Karina continuing to deny any involvement—the investigation has reached an impasse."'Amnesia?'What a convenient way to escape responsibility.Even the universe seemed to be helping him.I walked out of the police station. The sky was gloomy.'If you won't talk, then I'll speak for you.'I walked into an internet cafe and rented a private room.I compiled everything I had into one file, including the AI-generated homeless-man video Karina had sent me, the video I'd recorded when I caught them cheating, and high-resolution photos of the severed brake line. There were also screenshots from the surveillance footage

The interrogation room was lit with a harsh white light."Mr. Jerome, please tell us exactly what happened."I carefully recounted everything that had happened that night, from Karina's AI-generated video to the moment I realized something was wrong and didn't go home.I then told him how I went to the parking garage and discovered that the brake line had been cut."Why did you let Harry drive the car after you reported the incident?" the officer asked sharply."I reported it to put it on record. I let him drive it to obtain evidence."My answer was airtight."I suspected he was the one who tampered with the brakes. Once he drove the car away, he would be caught red-handed."If I hadn't let him drive it, he could have claimed I was framing him. Now we have both the man and the car. He can't deny it."I've submitted my previous police report, as well as the surveillance footage from my company's parking garage."The surveillance footage was retrieved. On the screen, a man wea
