Chapter 3

Penulis: Fall Leaf
I closed my laptop and walked out of the cafe.

I didn't go back to the office or head home.

Instead, I hailed a cab.

"Rivera Heights, please."

Halfway there, Tanya called.

"Mike, I found it."

Her voice was unusually serious.

"A minute after you hung up, Karina called Harry.

"They talked for fifteen minutes!

"And they've been calling each other almost every day for the past three months. Most of those calls were late at night."

My face remained emotionless. "Got it."

"Mike, what's going on? Do you need me to come over?"

"No. Get some sleep."

I hung up and stared out at the scenery outside.

The neon lights and bustling streets were painfully harsh on my eyes.

I recalled how Harry had 'cared' about me in my previous life.

He had once patted me on the shoulder and said, "Mike, stop working overtime all the time. Spend more time with Karina. She's a woman all alone at home. She gets lonely."

At another drinking party, he had jokingly said, "If you keep neglecting Karina, I might just start feeling sorry for her."

Back then, I thought it was just a joke between friends.

Now that I thought about it, every word had been a test and a boast.

The cab soon arrived at Harry's neighborhood.

Rivera Heights was an upscale development. Someone only three years out of college should never have been able to afford a place there.

Now I understood that part of this had been paid for with my 'financial assistance.'

I didn't go upstairs immediately.

Instead, I walked into the property management office.

"Hello, I'm looking for Harry in Unit 1503. I'm his brother."

The property manager glanced at me. "Do you have an appointment?"

I deliberately looked anxious. "He got drunk. He called me from a bar and asked me to come help him, but I don't have his key.

"I've been calling him, but he won't answer.

"I'm worried something happened to him. Could you send a security guard upstairs with me? If he really is drunk and starts acting up, at least there'll be someone there to witness it."

Seeing my earnest expression, the property manager nodded and called over a security guard.

"Take this gentleman upstairs and have a look."

The guard and I stepped into the elevator.

"What's he like when he's drunk?" the guard casually asked.

"Not very well. He tends to get rowdy." I casually made it up.

We reached the door of Unit 1503.

The guard was about to knock, but I stopped him.

"Wait. Let me try the code first. He once told me there was a backup password."

I walked over to the keypad.

In my previous life, Karina had accidentally let it slip once that Harry's backup password was her birthday.

'0815.'

I entered the numbers.

Beep.

The lock clicked open.

The security guard didn't suspect a thing.

I didn't rush to open the door.

I retrieved my phone and sent Karina a message.

[Honey, I'm done with work. I bought your favorite late-night snacks. I'll be home soon.]

Karina replied instantly.

[Okay! Honey, thanks for being so considerate.]

She thought I was still the same fool I'd been in my previous life.

I put away my phone and started recording.

I made sure both the audio and video were clear.

Then I said to the security guard, "Sir, do me a favor and come inside with me. If he's really drunk, I won't be able to carry him by myself."

The guard nodded. "Sure."

I pushed open the door.

The living room was empty.

The bedroom door was tightly shut. From inside came faint, disgusting sounds.

I gave the security guard a look.

He understood. Apparently, he thought I was planning to catch my brother in the act.

He suddenly pushed the bedroom door open.

Time passed quickly.A year later, I moved to another city.It was a coastal city in the south where the air was humid. It was far away from my hometown.I joined a new tech company and continued working as a programmer, but I was no longer the Mike who worked overtime until three in the morning.I signed up for a gym membership.Every day after work, instead of going home and collapsing onto the couch, I went to the gym and ran for an hour. There was something reassuring about the feeling of sweat soaking through my clothes.I picked up reading again. I read everything from technical books to literature.I even started learning to cook, but my cooking wasn't particularly good. When my coworkers invited me to go hiking, I went with them. When they invited me to go sailing on weekends, I went with them too.The man in the mirror was tanner and more muscular. My eyes no longer held the emptiness and exhaustion of my previous life.Tanya video-called me."Mike, you look gre

The agent's eyes lit up. "No problem! I guarantee it'll be sold within three days!"Three days later, the house was sold.I took the money and blocked Karina on every communication platform. There were more than a thousand photos of us on my phone. I deleted them one by one. When I reached the last photo, I stopped. It had been taken at the beach shortly after we got married. She had been smiling so sweetly.I tapped on the delete button.Everything was gone.I moved back in with my parents and temporarily shared a room with Tanya.Mom saw how much weight I'd lost, and her eyes welled with tears. "Mike, it's all in the past. We'll find you a better girl."Dad took a puff on his cigarette beside her and sighed. "Consider it a lesson learned."Tanya brought me a bowl of warm soup."Mike, have some soup."You've got me from now on."My nose stung. I accepted the bowl from her.I later went to Harry's hometown, a remote village. His parents were a simple, down-to-earth coup

After I walked out of the courtroom, Tanya followed me and slipped her arm through mine."Mike, let's go home. Shall we?""No."I turned to the attorney who had been waiting nearby. "Mr. Jackson, I need your help."Draft the divorce petition immediately."Luke Jackson nodded."Don't worry, Mr. Jerome."You're the innocent party, while Karina is clearly at fault for marital infidelity and involvement in criminal activity."My voice was cold. "I only have one request.""Go ahead.""Make sure she leaves with nothing."Luke hesitated. "Legally, she's still entitled to a portion of the marital assets–"I interrupted him. "Then make her pay compensation."Emotional distress, lost wages, and the psychological trauma she caused me."I don't want her to leave with a single dollar.""I understand. I'll do everything I can."Two weeks later, we were in civil court.Karina had hired an attorney as well. She was wearing a faded gray outfit. Her hair was frizzy and dull. She was cl

Karina’s plea was what finally pushed things over the edge.Harry, meanwhile, believed Karina was trying to dump all the blame on him.Meanwhile, the police found a pair of brake-line cutters in Harry's toolbox, and the tool marks matched perfectly. To make matters worse, technicians recovered several deleted chat messages from Harry's cloud storage. They had been sent by Karina.[He seems to be getting suspicious of me. What should I do?][Let's just do it. Follow your plan. Once he's dead, everything will be wiped clean.]Harry completely lost it when he saw Karina's messages. He could no longer keep up his so-called amnesia act."I'll confess!" He roared in the interrogation room."I did it! I cut the brakes! But Karina isn't getting away either! She was the one who urged me to do it!"When Karina learned that Harry had confessed and that the police had recovered her messages, she knew it was over.To save herself, she immediately turned on him."It was him! Harry lay in the intensive care unit for three days. When he finally woke up, the news the police brought me wasn't good."Mr. Jerome, Harry suffered a brain injury and is temporarily suffering from amnesia."He claims he doesn't remember anything related to the brakes."The evidence makes him a primary person of interest, but without a statement from him—and with Karina continuing to deny any involvement—the investigation has reached an impasse."'Amnesia?'What a convenient way to escape responsibility.Even the universe seemed to be helping him.I walked out of the police station. The sky was gloomy.'If you won't talk, then I'll speak for you.'I walked into an internet cafe and rented a private room.I compiled everything I had into one file, including the AI-generated homeless-man video Karina had sent me, the video I'd recorded when I caught them cheating, and high-resolution photos of the severed brake line. There were also screenshots from the surveillance footage

The interrogation room was lit with a harsh white light."Mr. Jerome, please tell us exactly what happened."I carefully recounted everything that had happened that night, from Karina's AI-generated video to the moment I realized something was wrong and didn't go home.I then told him how I went to the parking garage and discovered that the brake line had been cut."Why did you let Harry drive the car after you reported the incident?" the officer asked sharply."I reported it to put it on record. I let him drive it to obtain evidence."My answer was airtight."I suspected he was the one who tampered with the brakes. Once he drove the car away, he would be caught red-handed."If I hadn't let him drive it, he could have claimed I was framing him. Now we have both the man and the car. He can't deny it."I've submitted my previous police report, as well as the surveillance footage from my company's parking garage."The surveillance footage was retrieved. On the screen, a man wea
