Chapter 3

Author: Anonymous
"Lisa!" I roared in fury, my eyes burning red.

Lisa jumped at my voice. After a brief moment to recover, she snapped at me irritably, "Matthew, what are you freaking out about now? This isn't the place for any Tom, Dick, or Harry to throw a tantrum.

"Didn't you say you wanted a divorce? So why are you here bothering me? Couldn't hold out already? Pathetic!"

I ignored her mockery and pointed at the shattered pieces on the floor with a trembling hand. "What happened? How did this end up broken like this?"

Before Lisa could answer, Elijah explained pitifully from the side, "Matthew, it's my fault. I accidentally knocked it over when I was looking for Lisa. If you need to blame someone, blame me. Don't blame Lisa anymore."

He spoke in a whiny voice, but his eyes were dry without a single tear. It was nauseating.

Lisa quickly cut him off, "How could this be your fault? If you ask me, the bracelet is of cheap quality. It broke after dropping once. Who knows what factory made such a defective product?"

Then, she looked at me with disdain. "Getting this worked up over some worthless trinket. Are you even a man?"

"This is my family's heirloom. On our wedding day, my mother put it on you herself. How can you talk about it like that?"

Lisa had no idea that this bracelet had been passed down through generations of my family. It was something no amount of money could buy.

"Enough." Lisa looked at me with disgust. "Just name your price. I'll compensate you, okay? I'm so sick of watching you nitpick over every little thing. It's revolting."

At that moment, I suddenly felt completely drained. The truly revolting ones were the two people standing in front of me.

The Lisa before me was nothing like the person I had first fallen in love with. I lost all feelings for her.

Since the bracelet was already broken, there was no point keeping it. As for this shameless woman in front of me? I did not want her either.

I took one last look at Lisa and rejected her coldly. "Lisa, I've already submitted my resignation. Whether you agree or not, it'll take effect in 30 days. Also, I've contacted a lawyer to draft divorce papers. They'll be delivered tomorrow. Remember to sign them."

Without waiting for Lisa's reaction, I turned and strode away without looking back.

When I returned to the Baker residence, Mom did not blame me after hearing about the bracelet. Instead, she let out a long breath of relief and said, "If breaking a bracelet is what it took to see Lisa's true colors, then so be it.

"We were too low-key from the start. That gave them the opportunity to walk all over you. Now that you've seen them for who they really are, don't be polite to them anymore."

Dad also offered comfort from the side, saying, "Don't dwell on it. Sarah's been waiting in your room all day. Go see her."

The moment I pushed open the door, Sarah rushed over and pulled me into a tight embrace. "If you hadn't come back soon, I was going to storm Lisa's place and drag you out myself!"

I could not help but smile. After all these years, she was still so direct and passionate.

Sarah led me to the desk and carefully opened a cake box. "This is the first time I've made a birthday cake for anyone. You'd better not complain about it."

The cake was beautiful and in my favorite shade of blue. It turned out Sarah had been waiting all this time to make up for my missed birthday. Warmth flooded through my chest.

After we finished the cake, Sarah looked at me intently. "So? Did she agree to the divorce?"

I shook my head. Based on what happened today, Lisa would never sign the papers so easily.

Sarah just smiled mysteriously, her tone light and playful. "In that case, we'll just have to pull a little switcheroo. All we need is a signature, right?"

The moment Jackson saw me, his eyes brightened briefly before dimming again.I, the 'poor boy from the mountains' was now an existence they could never reach. The elderly couple helped their daughter up from the floor. Katherine looked at me, opened her mouth several times, and finally managed to squeeze out a sentence. "Lisa did do something unforgivable, but for the sake of our past ties, could you help us get through this financial crisis?""Past ties?" I laughed disdainfully. "What ties did we ever have? You treated me like a servant and made me work like a machine for your company. What makes you worthy of making this request?"The wedding continued after the three members of the Lynch family left dejectedly. When the officiant announced that we were husband and wife, Sarah excitedly threw herself into my arms. Without warning, she kissed me. I smiled

Lisa could not believe what she was seeing. She lunged forward to try and snatch the marriage certificate from Sarah's hands, but Sarah dodged sideways.Losing her balance, Lisa stumbled and fell off the stage. Though the stage was not high, the fall was embarrassing. After getting up, Lisa shrieked hysterically, "Matthew, you think you can get away with finding someone to forge my signature? I'm going to sue you!""But you signed it yourself. Don't you remember?" I smiled at the disheveled woman below the stage.Lisa looked confused. Seeing the cunning look in my eyes, she suddenly came to a realization. "That document that day!""Exactly. You were so busy fussing over your boy toy that the moment I mentioned signing something, you couldn't scribble your name fast enough."Before she could explode, I raised my finger and made a shushing gesture. "Don't rush. I still have some things specially prepared for you to see."I signaled my assistant with my eyes. The big screen then d

While Lisa was running herself ragged for the baby and Elijah, Sarah and I had enjoyed two carefree weeks in Marosia. When Lisa called again, Sarah and I were deep-sea diving, watching the beautiful underwater landscape. After we surfaced, I saw over 20 missed calls on my phone. I simply turned it off and went to have dinner with Sarah.I knew why Lisa was looking for me. Her company had been shut down. Before boarding the plane to Marosia, I had anonymously sent all the evidence I had of Lisa's tax evasion to the relevant authorities. All the investors who caught wind of it withdrew their funding immediately, and the company's cash flow collapsed in an instant.Lisa would have to be an idiot not to know I was behind this. That was why she was desperately trying to reach me. It was too bad, though. She had treated me like I was nothing before. Now, she could not hope to get any response from me.Since Lisa was pregnant, she was confined to house arrest in her villa with restric

For three whole days, I stayed at Mom and Dad's place. During that time, Sarah visited eight times. Each visit, she brought several large bags full of things—medicine, snacks, supplements, fruit, everything imaginable. She practically could have moved her entire house over.Mom teased her, "With all this back and forth, you might as well just move in."Sarah's eyes lit up. She was about to nod when I stopped her just in time. After all, Lisa and I had not yet completely cut ties. If this caused Sarah any trouble, how would she face others afterward as a young woman?Sensing my concern, Sarah gave me a sweet smile. "I'll listen to Matthew. I've waited so many years already. A few more days won't hurt."That evening, Sarah carefully changed my bandages. When she saw my brow furrow slightly, she immediately eased up, and her movements grew gentler. What normally took less than a minute stretched into more than ten minutes. My feelings were all tangled up. It turned out that this wa

The next day, I went to the office as usual and organized my work. I wrapped up what needed finishing and prepared my handover for everything else.In my five years at the company, I had never taken a single day off, and overtime had been routine. Adding it all up, I had accumulated enough leave for an entire month. I was only here today to pack up my belongings. As I was organizing my things, shouting suddenly erupted outside my office. I opened the door to find Elijah kneeling there, begging repeatedly.Elijah was kneeling on the floor. "Matthew, please don't give Lisa the cold shoulder because of me. She's pregnant. She can't do without you."Elijah was still a senior in college. For the past six months, he had been interning at the company Lisa and I managed. There were already plenty of onlookers, and when they heard this involved the bosses' drama, even more people craned their necks to watch.Seeing the crowd grow, Elijah grabbed onto my pant leg and pleaded desperately, "
