Chapter 2

Author: Anonymous
The following day, I was woken up by an urgent call. "There's been a major issue, Mr. Quinlan! Ms. Lister inexplicably transferred all of her shares to Colin, so the board members are extremely upset about it!"

I froze for a moment before instinctively tapping open the work group chat, where it had already erupted into chaos.

"Is this for real? Is Ms. Lister really in a relationship with Colin?"

"Do you even have to ask? It's not like you guys don't know about Ms. Lister's special situation. Have you ever seen her get this physically close with anyone before? She literally gave Colin her shares! If that ain't love, I don't know what is!"

"Where does that leave Mr. Quinlan, then? I could've sworn they were actually a thing!"

"Mr. Quinlan has always been a hopeless simp for Ms. Lister!"

I couldn't help but laugh in sheer disbelief when I read that message.

Mackenzie had given me several conditions before joining the company, with one of them being that our status as a married couple was to remain hidden from everyone. She claimed she didn't want people assuming that she had reached her position because of me.

She had no problem taking my resources when she needed them, but now she wanted to pretend she built everything on her own. She didn't even have actual control over the company, so she didn't even have the right to transfer the shares to begin with.

She could mess around all she wanted, but the rest of the company wasn't going to suffer for her nonsense.

I took a deep breath and dialed Mackenzie's number, only to have Colin pick it up after a few rings. He then drawled on the other end of the line, saying, "I'm sorry, but Mackenzie just finished exercising and is taking a shower. You'll have to call back tomorrow, Thomas."

In that instant, everything went dead silent around me. I felt a lump in my throat as I asked, "What do you mean by showering? Where are you right now?"

Colin let out a contemptuous laugh, his voice filled with obvious provocation. "It's obvious that we're at a hotel. Where else did you think we'd be, Thomas?"

I knew Colin was deliberately provoking me. I held onto the phone tightly, my knuckles cracking from the force. "Do you know that she's my wife, Colin?"

Colin had nowhere to go after graduating from university, so he bent over backward to track down where I lived. He dropped to his knees before me the second he stepped inside, bawling his eyes out and begging me for help.

I felt bad for him, so I made an exception to let him join the company. I had never expected that decision to become the start of a betrayal.

Colin replied offhandedly, "Isn't this society about rewarding those who are capable? You were born with everything you could ever want, while I've struggled so much. Is it really so hard for you to step aside and let me have this, Thomas?"

I angrily ended the call. The disappointment, shame, and anger I had been holding in for so long suddenly exploded.

I looked around at the home I had once put so much effort into creating, only to find it painfully ironic now. I couldn't hold myself back anymore and threw my phone against the wall.

By the time Jesse Hall, my assistant, caught wind of the situation and rushed over, she walked in to find a complete mess. I was on the couch, burning through cigarettes one after the other, completely drowned in a suffocating cloud of smoke.

"What's our next move, Mr. Quinlan?" Jesse stood nervously by the doorway, her voice barely above a whisper.

I tossed the cigarette butt and ground it beneath my heel, replying coldly, "It's not the end of the world yet, so calm down."

I had no reason to stay behind Mackenzie every day to clean up her messes since she assumed she was capable enough to break away from my influence.

I was eager to observe how far an incompetent individual with only a vocational degree and a trophy wife who did nothing but shop for designer bags could actually go without my support.

It took five whole days for Mackenzie to bother remembering she had a husband waiting at home. She convinced herself that she ran the company and that the place would collapse without her and Colin, so she strolled back into the company acting like she was doing everyone a favor.

When she walked through the doors, she was met with earnings reports showing profits had surged multiple times over. The employees, who used to treat her with total deference, paid no attention to her presence, remaining engrossed in their work without looking up.

She felt utterly humiliated as she stormed over and kicked the major shareholders' door open in a fury.

But the board members inside barely spared her a look before returning to the restructuring paperwork in front of them.

Mackenzie snapped, "Have you all gone blind? Didn't you notice that I have returned?"

"Please be mindful of your behavior. There are people trying to work here, Ms. Lister," Jesse said, sounding courteous but completely detached.

Mackenzie pushed Jesse out of her way. "What's that supposed to mean? I'm the CEO of this company!"

Jesse maintained a polite, professional smile on his face as she asked, "Did you not know that Mr. Quinlan has revoked every single one of your shares, Ms. Lister?"

Mackenzie eventually signed the divorce agreement. She knew that Scarlett was right about the whole thing—any further delay meant taking this to court. She would be stripped of every single dime the moment I brought out the evidence of her cheating. She had to safeguard her own interest, so she had no choice but to sign it, regardless of how unwilling she was.She looked at me with tears in her eyes on the day we finalized the divorce. "Do you really not want me anymore, Thomas?"I couldn't help but roll my eyes at her. "You should drop the act now, Mackenzie. Scarlett is literally sitting in the car right there, waiting for me, so please stop deluding yourself." Leaving her to stare at me with that hurt expression, I hopped into the car and took off, completely disappearing from her sight.…Mackenzie showed up uninvited on the day Scarlett and I got married. She nervously passed me the wedding gift while seated among the guests. She then said, "I'm all on my own now. If y

Mackenzie was dead set against divorcing me, so she actually dragged her parents all the way over from her hometown, which was thousands of miles away.I saw the three of them sitting imposingly on the couch the moment I stepped through the door, clearly waiting to chew me out.Mackenzie's father immediately started blaming me. "I believed you were an honest person, which was why I allowed my daughter to marry you, Thomas. I never expected that just a few years later, you would cheat on her. I clearly misjudged you."Mackenzie just sat there putting on a show with her tears, refusing to pay any attention to me.They were hoping to catch me feeling guilty, but I calmly took out my phone and said, "You're trespassing on private property. I can report this to the police at any time."Their expressions instantly hardened, clearly not expecting me to treat them so coldly.Mackenzie's mother broke her silence, visibly agitated. "H-How can you say that? We're in Mackenzie's house! How c

That evening, Mackenzie arrived at my place in an almost frantic state. Scarlett was picking out stuff for the wedding when Mackenzie frantically pushed her away and charged up to confront me. "How can you do this to me, Thomas? We haven't even gotten divorced!"Scarlett offered a faint, mocking smile. "You two aren't exactly a married couple anymore. You're already in the middle of a divorce. You should just sign the divorce agreement as soon as possible. If the matter goes to court and evidence of your affair is presented, you may lose your claim to everything.""Shut up! You're the bitch who ruined everything for me!" Mackenzie pinned the blame for our ruined marriage completely onto Scarlett. She let out a hysterical shriek as she charged straight at Scarlett.I reacted immediately and kicked her away. "Who allowed you to lay a hand on my wife?"Mackenzie crashed hard against the wall behind her and collapsed onto the floor. She looked up at me in disbelief and said, "You a

Mackenzie went off the grid for over two weeks just to show me the gravity of my mistake. She had at least kept her social media updated before, so I always knew what she was doing. But this time, even her best friends didn't know her whereabouts.I knew she was giving me the cold shoulder to get me to back down and apologize, but without her around, the only things I felt were a long-lost freedom and peace.Just when I thought this quiet streak would keep going, I walked through the door after work one day and found Mackenzie sprawled out on the couch. She barely cast a glance my way, then pointed to the fruit sitting on the table. "Go wash an apple for me," she ordered.I smiled faintly and said, "Have you lost your mind? We've got nothing to say to each other unless it's about the divorce."Mackenzie clearly hadn't expected my attitude to remain so unyielding after all this time. She bolted upright from the couch, her expression instantly hardening. "Haven't you had enough

I stared at them calmly and said, "You two can carry on. Scarlett and I were just passing through. Do you want me to book a room for you? If you're staying out tonight, I'll tell the housekeeper not to prepare your share of dinner."Mackenzie's face instantly drained of color. "It's not what it looks like, Thomas! I just happened to run into him working here today. I felt bad for him, so I stayed to talk to him for a bit. I mean, we were standing a bit too close, but I swear nothing actually happened!"She shot Colin a quick look after saying that, silently signaling him with her eyes.Colin nodded hurriedly, saying. "Exactly, Thomas! Mackenzie and I are just friends, so please don't overthink it! She had something in her eye, and I was only helping her blow it out!"Scarlett chuckled. "Did you forget there are surveillance cameras in here? Why don't we pull the footage to see how it actually went down?"Mackenzie instantly lost her nerve. However, she quickly snapped out of it,

Mackenzie had finally backed off, but Colin came knocking at my place early that morning. He used the same old trick and got on his knees right outside my front door. "You can't just let them fire me, Thomas! You know how tough it is for me to land a good job without a proper degree or skills! "I saw that you were slammed with work and couldn't take care of Mackenzie, so I just wanted to help you out. I did it for your marriage, Thomas! I swear nothing went down between us!"I sat on the couch and slowly took a sip of coffee. "I'll believe nothing happened between you two if you go ram yourself dead right here in front of me." Colin's expression shifted slightly. He hesitated for a moment before he abruptly rose to his feet, as if he had made up his mind. He rushed toward the stone pillar at the entryway, yet with only a few inches to spare, he chickened out.He sank to the floor as his knees buckled, crying uncontrollably. "Do you really have to destroy me completely, Thomas?
