Chapter 1

I finally answered my phone when Mackenzie Lister, my wife, called for the 13th time.

"What the hell do you think you're doing, Thomas Quinlan? It's an extremely crucial moment for the company right now, especially since it's going public soon. You're going to ruin everything!

"Isn't it just a photo? Why are you making such a big deal out of it? You're making a complete laughingstock out of us! I must have been blind to marry someone as immature as you!"

Mackenzie immediately started tearing into me the second I picked up.

I had been arguing with Mackenzie countless times over her assistant, Colin Sumner, lately. I was completely exhausted by this point, so I just said calmly, "If you actually knew how to draw the line and kept your distance from him, we wouldn't be making a scene like this to begin with.

"You're actually blaming me now? Who's the one being unreasonable here, Mackenzie?"

Mackenzie's company relied entirely on my connections and funding to get off the ground from the very beginning.

I had invested so much time, effort, and resources into helping it grow, only to be repaid like this. I couldn't help but find it utterly absurd.

In addition, everyone knew Colin was my distant cousin. If he was shameless enough to mess around with his own cousin's wife, then he needed to own up to the fallout.

"Why are you acting so unreasonable right now? You're the one who told me Colin had a tough upbringing and asked me to look out for him. How could you be complaining now that I'm doing what you asked, Thomas?"

I scoffed. "I asked you to look after him, not get all over each other. I can overlook how cold you've been to me, but you'd better not forget whose connections and support had brought your company this far and stop before this turns ugly for the both of us."

Mackenzie fell silent for a moment, then grumbled unhappily. "You're so narrow-minded, Thomas. I work myself to the bone at the company every day, yet I still have to put up with your endless whining at home. Why can't you just give me a break, Thomas?"

I was running out of patience. "You think I'm the one being unreasonable here? You and Colin were practically about to kiss at the annual gala, and I'm not allowed to have a problem with that? Do I have to catch the two of you going into a hotel together before I have the right to get angry?"

I had been drinking one glass of strong liquor after another to help her secure an investment at the gala that day.

I had just begun to feel dizzy from drinking when the CEO from the other company suddenly patted my shoulder and said, "I didn't expect Ms. Lister to actually have such a gentle, delicate side."

I looked back in surprise and saw Mackenzie shyly leaning into Colin's arms while whispering something into his ear.

They kept covering their mouths and giggling together, completely wrapped up in their own world. They were standing so close that their lips actually brushed against each other for a moment. They looked just like a young couple head over heels in love.

I couldn't help but clench my fists when I saw the scene before me. I found myself wondering if this was the same Mackenzie who used to frown and pull away whenever someone touched her.

Mackenzie looked uneasy and avoided my gaze the moment I brought it up. "I was drunk that day. I wasn't even fully conscious of what I was doing. Do you really have to keep making a big deal out of it, Thomas?"

I obviously wasn't buying that joke of an excuse. "You said you were drunk back then, right? What about right now? Do you think you're out of it right now, too? I've caught you two being overly intimate more than once or twice. Do you even regard me as your husband, Mackenzie?"

Mackenzie's face flushed. She wanted to argue back, but after stammering for a while, she couldn't get a single word out.

I couldn't be bothered to talk nonsense with her anymore. "That's enough, Mackenzie. Do you honestly believe what you're saying? You'd better not pull something like this and provoke me again. My decision to withdraw the investment is just a warning."

Mackenzie wasn't about to back down without a fight since her financial interest was on the line. "Thomas Quinlan! Have I been so accommodating lately that you've started thinking you can act however you want?"

"Who exactly is the one losing sight of their place here, Mackenzie?" I asked, my expression hardening.

Mackenzie couldn't possibly have made it this far without me. She had become the perfect example of someone who forgot the person who helped her once she had succeeded.

I had been the one who fell in love with her at first sight and pursued her persistently, so she always held the upper hand in our relationship all those years. I had given everything willingly and had never held it against her, but nothing I did could change how cold she was toward me.

"I'm not going back and forth with you on this anymore, so you'd better get your act together," I said before hanging up on her.

I then leaned back into the couch and stared at the ceiling, sitting in total silence.

Mackenzie eventually signed the divorce agreement. She knew that Scarlett was right about the whole thing—any further delay meant taking this to court. She would be stripped of every single dime the moment I brought out the evidence of her cheating. She had to safeguard her own interest, so she had no choice but to sign it, regardless of how unwilling she was.She looked at me with tears in her eyes on the day we finalized the divorce. "Do you really not want me anymore, Thomas?"I couldn't help but roll my eyes at her. "You should drop the act now, Mackenzie. Scarlett is literally sitting in the car right there, waiting for me, so please stop deluding yourself." Leaving her to stare at me with that hurt expression, I hopped into the car and took off, completely disappearing from her sight.…Mackenzie showed up uninvited on the day Scarlett and I got married. She nervously passed me the wedding gift while seated among the guests. She then said, "I'm all on my own now. If y

Mackenzie was dead set against divorcing me, so she actually dragged her parents all the way over from her hometown, which was thousands of miles away.I saw the three of them sitting imposingly on the couch the moment I stepped through the door, clearly waiting to chew me out.Mackenzie's father immediately started blaming me. "I believed you were an honest person, which was why I allowed my daughter to marry you, Thomas. I never expected that just a few years later, you would cheat on her. I clearly misjudged you."Mackenzie just sat there putting on a show with her tears, refusing to pay any attention to me.They were hoping to catch me feeling guilty, but I calmly took out my phone and said, "You're trespassing on private property. I can report this to the police at any time."Their expressions instantly hardened, clearly not expecting me to treat them so coldly.Mackenzie's mother broke her silence, visibly agitated. "H-How can you say that? We're in Mackenzie's house! How c

That evening, Mackenzie arrived at my place in an almost frantic state. Scarlett was picking out stuff for the wedding when Mackenzie frantically pushed her away and charged up to confront me. "How can you do this to me, Thomas? We haven't even gotten divorced!"Scarlett offered a faint, mocking smile. "You two aren't exactly a married couple anymore. You're already in the middle of a divorce. You should just sign the divorce agreement as soon as possible. If the matter goes to court and evidence of your affair is presented, you may lose your claim to everything.""Shut up! You're the bitch who ruined everything for me!" Mackenzie pinned the blame for our ruined marriage completely onto Scarlett. She let out a hysterical shriek as she charged straight at Scarlett.I reacted immediately and kicked her away. "Who allowed you to lay a hand on my wife?"Mackenzie crashed hard against the wall behind her and collapsed onto the floor. She looked up at me in disbelief and said, "You a

Mackenzie went off the grid for over two weeks just to show me the gravity of my mistake. She had at least kept her social media updated before, so I always knew what she was doing. But this time, even her best friends didn't know her whereabouts.I knew she was giving me the cold shoulder to get me to back down and apologize, but without her around, the only things I felt were a long-lost freedom and peace.Just when I thought this quiet streak would keep going, I walked through the door after work one day and found Mackenzie sprawled out on the couch. She barely cast a glance my way, then pointed to the fruit sitting on the table. "Go wash an apple for me," she ordered.I smiled faintly and said, "Have you lost your mind? We've got nothing to say to each other unless it's about the divorce."Mackenzie clearly hadn't expected my attitude to remain so unyielding after all this time. She bolted upright from the couch, her expression instantly hardening. "Haven't you had enough

I stared at them calmly and said, "You two can carry on. Scarlett and I were just passing through. Do you want me to book a room for you? If you're staying out tonight, I'll tell the housekeeper not to prepare your share of dinner."Mackenzie's face instantly drained of color. "It's not what it looks like, Thomas! I just happened to run into him working here today. I felt bad for him, so I stayed to talk to him for a bit. I mean, we were standing a bit too close, but I swear nothing actually happened!"She shot Colin a quick look after saying that, silently signaling him with her eyes.Colin nodded hurriedly, saying. "Exactly, Thomas! Mackenzie and I are just friends, so please don't overthink it! She had something in her eye, and I was only helping her blow it out!"Scarlett chuckled. "Did you forget there are surveillance cameras in here? Why don't we pull the footage to see how it actually went down?"Mackenzie instantly lost her nerve. However, she quickly snapped out of it,

Mackenzie had finally backed off, but Colin came knocking at my place early that morning. He used the same old trick and got on his knees right outside my front door. "You can't just let them fire me, Thomas! You know how tough it is for me to land a good job without a proper degree or skills! "I saw that you were slammed with work and couldn't take care of Mackenzie, so I just wanted to help you out. I did it for your marriage, Thomas! I swear nothing went down between us!"I sat on the couch and slowly took a sip of coffee. "I'll believe nothing happened between you two if you go ram yourself dead right here in front of me." Colin's expression shifted slightly. He hesitated for a moment before he abruptly rose to his feet, as if he had made up his mind. He rushed toward the stone pillar at the entryway, yet with only a few inches to spare, he chickened out.He sank to the floor as his knees buckled, crying uncontrollably. "Do you really have to destroy me completely, Thomas?
