Chapter 5

Author: Sweetie Moore
Seth's POV

Regina was dumbfounded. She seized my arm. "What on earth is wrong with you?"

I had brought up divorce so many times, yet she still thought I was just throwing a tantrum.

"I'm serious. I wish you both well. After seven years apart, you've finally found your way back to each other."

I'd once trashed our home in an attempt to keep Regina and Lucas apart. She'd called me immature, put me under house arrest for a week, and took off on a trip with Lucas instead.

Now that I was sincerely wishing them well, instead of being relieved, Regina scowled at me. "I've already apologized and given you gifts, Seth. If you're still unsatisfied, just tell me what you want, okay?"

Having said that, she suddenly remembered something and muttered to herself, "Hold on… You would never be this cruel to me. This must be your mother's idea!"

Regina was furious, and she dialed Mom's number. However, the phone in my pocket began to ring.

Regina still thought I'd hidden Mom somewhere. "Seth, ask your mother to show herself right now! I'd like to know what I've ever done to offend her. Why does she loathe me so much? Does she have to begrudge everyone else their happiness just because she lost her own husband?"

Tears welled up in my eyes, and I pointed at the urn in my arms. "That's enough, Regina. Mom's right here."

Regina was dumbstruck. Realizing that the box I was holding was an urn, she backed away in disbelief.

Lucas supported her before looking at me with disappointment. "Seth, even if you are terrified of being poor, you can't buy an urn and curse your own mother just to demand gifts!"

After hearing that, Regina frowned. "You brought that urn back on purpose just to spite me, didn't you? Get rid of it right this instant!"

I shot her a cold look and walked straight out the door. I thought this would be the end of it, yet the very next second, Lucas abruptly snatched the urn from me and smashed it hard against the floor.

In an instant, the urn shattered, scattering Mom's ashes across the floor. A loud ringing filled my head, and I couldn't utter a single word. I dropped to my knees and began gathering her ashes, bit by bit.

Mom had once been a living, breathing person. Now, all that remained of her weighed so little, and even that wasn't spared from such humiliation.

This was all my fault. I hadn't been able to protect her when she was alive, and I couldn't give her the peace she deserved after she died.

Noticing how utterly devastated I was, Regina felt a pang of heartache and wanted to come over to comfort me.

Lucas yanked her back. "Unlucky things like this need to be smashed on the spot, or else it will ruin our child's future."

The moment she heard that it could bring misfortune upon the baby, she arched her brow. "Wow, you even went so far as to buy colored powder and pretend it was your mom's ashes. You really went all out with this little performance."

I shot daggers at her. I raised my hand and flung the divorce agreement in her face. Then, I gathered the remaining ashes into a bag and stormed off.

Regina had delicate skin, and the sharp edge of the papers cut her face, drawing a thin line of blood. She clutched her cheek and pointed at my retreating back. "Seth, if you walk out of that door today, don't ever think about coming back!" she bellowed.

That was fine by me. I strode away without a second thought. I never wanted to see her again, not for the rest of my life.

…

Early the next morning, Regina grew anxious when she realized I hadn't come home and hadn't sent her a single message.

The more she thought about it, the more she realized that it had been downright humiliating to lock Mom in a coffin. She had been in the wrong on that part.

"Help me buy some handbags and jewelry, Lucas. Then, accompany me to apologize to my mother-in-law."

Lucas' face fell, and he was about to refuse when the doorbell rang. He smiled. "What's the rush? I told you, Seth is only after your money. He would never really leave you."

At last, she broke into a smile and hurriedly answered the door. "Seth, you're back—"

However, as soon as the door opened, she found several police officers at her doorstep. "Regina, you're suspected of murdering your mother-in-law, Winona Laurel. Please come with us."

Seth's POVRegina had committed a crime, and she'd had to go to prison to atone for her own actions. Unwilling to listen to her endless rambling any longer, I cut her off. "That's enough. I don't want to hear it. We're over. There's no going back. From now on, don't call me unless it's about the divorce!""Hold on, Seth!" Regina panicked, afraid I wouldn't hear her out. "If you're upset about that child's existence, I can give him up for adoption. Can you come back and give me another chance? Didn't your mother always want to see you have a child while she was alive? We can have one of our own and make her dream come true!"Irritated, I hung up on her.Regina's name popped up on my screen again in no time. I couldn't be bothered to listen to another word from her. I messaged my lawyer and left Regina's case entirely in his hands. I was determined to get divorced. …A month after Mom passed away, I still hadn't come to terms with her death. • My Wife's Newborn, My Mother's Coffin   Chapter 9

Seth's POVI had left Mom's death in the hands of the cops and entrusted the divorce proceedings to my lawyer. Regina, the woman I'd once loved with every fiber of my being, was someone I no longer wanted to see, not even for a second. If it weren't for the pending divorce lawsuit that made cutting contact impossible, I wouldn't have even answered this call. Regina wasn't upset in the slightest. In fact, she actually apologized to me for once. "I'm terribly sorry about what happened to your mother, but I never intended to take her life. Even though I didn't particularly like her, I never slighted her when it came to gifts. "Winona's gone now, but the living still have to carry on with their lives, don't they? She would want you to be happy, too. She also—" "That's enough!" I snapped, cutting her off. "It was precisely because she wanted me to be happy so badly that she endured everything for my sake, only to end up dead by your hands! Regina Morgan, are you telling me all this

Seth's POVMom told me she was getting old and didn't want to get in my way. Last time, when Dad's grave was dug up, no one was more heartbroken or devastated than Mom. Yet, she knew I couldn't let go of Regina, so she comforted me and even made excuses for Regina. "Reggie wants to be childfree, and us dinosaurs just don't understand your modern trends. Maybe your mother-in-law has been pressuring her too much to have a baby, and she's been bottling up her frustration for a while. That's probably why her reaction was so extreme."At the end of the day, you two are married. If you have an issue, you should talk it out and work it through. You can't keep giving each other the silent treatment like this. Hurry up and find an excuse to make up with her already." Looking at her white hair, I refused to compromise. I was a good employee at work, a dutiful husband at home, and a son-in-law Sharon could count on. However, the one role I'd failed at was being a good son. I couldn'

Third-person POVHowever, Regina was well aware that it was wrong. She told herself time and time again that Lucas was a liar, yet she still couldn't help but believe him.The moment she learned that Lucas' days were numbered, all her lingering resentment dissolved into smoke. All she wanted was to put an end to everything once and for all, to help him one final time and, in doing so, help herself move on, too. Little did she know, she'd been deceived once again.Lucas was perfectly fine. Everything he'd done had been nothing more than an elaborate scheme to trick her into having his child. Because of that lie, she'd given Seth the silent treatment for nine months, and she hadn't even dared to reach out to him. She'd wanted to wait until the dust settled. Regina had thought that since Seth knew about her history with Lucas and was still willing to marry her, what difference would one more child make? She'd firmly believed that even at their wedding seven years ago, Seth woul

Third-person POV"What? My mother-in-law is dead?" Regina stared at the officers before her in disbelief. She took one look at Lucas, who was standing beside her, and instantly put her guard up. "When did my mother-in-law pass away?"The police officer frowned. "Last Monday."Regina scoffed. "Nonsense. My mother-in-law was perfectly fine last Monday. She even had enough energy to throw hands. "Did he hire you to pretend to be cops? Where'd you buy your uniforms? They're pretty convincing." Regina completely relaxed, assuming they were actors hired by Seth. Seth had made so many threats yesterday that she'd actually thought he was going to leave her. Yet, after only a night, he was already so impatient that he'd sent people over to put on a show. Lost in her own reverie, she failed to notice that Lucas' face had turned ghastly white. He, who was usually so talkative, was dead silent at this moment, wishing he could become invisible. Noticing she was all smiles, the poli
