Chapter 2

Author: Bloom Confetti
Danny freaked and dragged me into a corner. "Jerome, it's not what it looks like. Just go home, okay? A few days—No, tomorrow—I'll explain everything. There's nothing going on with Lia. The kid isn't mine. There are people everywhere, Jerome. Don't make a scene. Please!"

'Lia.'

Said like that—like they were close—and he still claimed nothing was going on?

"Get lost."

I swiped my private card and headed upstairs.

My head was buzzing. I just needed Talia in front of me, telling the truth.

"Talia, get out here!"

I kicked the door open.

Nothing.

Just silence.

Danny rushed up, baby in his arms, and grabbed me. "Jerome, Talia's still in a meeting. Can we talk after she's done?"

I shook him off. "Talk about what? How you've been sleeping with my wife behind my back—and had two kids with her?"

A sleepy little boy wandered out and ran straight to him, all clingy.

"Daddy, I wanna see my sister! Mommy said she's making potato salad and baked ribs tonight. She can't break her promise!"

I stared at the kid.

He looked just like Talia.

All those late nights—I thought she was grinding for her career.

Turns out, she was running a whole other family.

And me?

I'd never even had a single meal she cooked.

On the table sat a fresh family photo—four of them. Talia in Danny's arms, their son beside them, their newborn in hers.

Toys were everywhere. They'd been here a lot.

And I had no clue. Let them live easy for years.

I let out a bitter laugh, wishing I could smack myself. Then I called my assistant.

"Dig up everything. Proof of Talia Sweeney's affair. Every dollar she's spent. I want it all—and I want it back."

Danny almost dropped to his knees. "How can you do this? Talia's proud. If she loses the career she built, she's done!"

That was almost funny.

"What right do you have to negotiate with me?"

Eyes wet, he clutched the crying baby. "It's a misunderstanding. Just go home. After today, I'll come explain everything."

He sounded sincere as he edged closer, holding the kid.

I stepped back, disgusted—but he grabbed me.

Then he threw himself backward.

The baby flew—almost a yard.

"Ah—my child!"

He staggered, scooped up the screaming infant, then pointed at me, hand shaking. "What are you trying to do? You want my wife that bad you'd kill our kid?"

The staff gasped and rushed in front of him. Even the janitor lingered, whispering, pointing.

"Who is that guy? Ms. Sweeney's stalker? She's married and he still won't quit. He even tried to hurt a newborn—what a psycho."

The little boy dropped to the floor, shaking, then burst into tears. "Go away! You're not allowed to bully my dad and my sister!"

The conference room door swung open.

"What's going on?"

Danny ran over, clutching the baby, crying. "Lia—if you were a second later, you'd be looking at our daughter's dead body!"

"Stop." Talia frowned, taking the baby carefully. "Don't say that."

Then she saw me.

Panic flashed across her face.

Danny pointed at me, voice shaking. "Talia, thank God you're here. Jerome tried to kill our daughter!"

I didn't even get a word out.

Her hand cracked across my face.

"Jerome Jahn, have you lost it? You touched my daughter? Or what—you think I'll stop supporting you and you'll end up begging on the street?"

"You know how weak you got after giving birth. That's why you lied about business trips and disappeared for months." I frowned. "And all that 'humiliation' you keep bringing up? My family and I never saw you that way."Remember your first deal? I couldn't watch you run yourself into the ground, so I met the partner myself and locked it in for you."Then you talked for three hours straight about that useless project. I cleaned it up and sent it over like it was your work."And the Blue Sky project you bragged about for days? Trading two junk plots under Cresthaven for prime commercial land—you really think that was your persistence?"Business runs on profit. Why would they care about you? I used company resources to make it happen and told them not to mention me."Talia, every step you took—I laid it out for you. Without me, you would've crashed."I pulled you up. Covered for you. Made you look good."I thought I was helping you grow. But you took everything and turned around, sa

I couldn't make sense of it. Was it really just about kids? After all these years, did everything my family did mean nothing? For a child, she cheated—and kept pushing Grandpa back into relapse.Talia went quiet, then laughed."Jerome, you'll never get it!" Her eyes were bloodshot. "You never had to fight for anything. The stuff I clawed for years to get—you just handed over with a word. Your charity? It suffocated me. You hear me?"Her voice shot up. "That internship I nearly killed myself for—you handled it with one call. That project I spent three months landing—I wanted to celebrate, and you just smiled and handed me a year's salary."What was I to you? Worse than a stray dog? Every second you reminded me—no matter how hard I worked, I'd never match one move, one word from you. And that old man—always sending jewelry. What, to mock me for not being able to afford it?"Her voice shook. "But I couldn't even be mad. I had to smile and take it. So I kept pushing—again and again—j

Grandpa barely got the words out before he went still."Doctor! Get a doctor!" I slammed the call button.Doctors and nurses rushed in. Once they confirmed he'd only passed out from weakness, I finally dropped onto the couch. But those unfinished words had already set Naomi off.She turned to her staff. "Call Arlencia. Reinvestigate everything on Talia from the past seven years. Anything tied to my grandfather goes first. Don't miss a thing."No one dared question her.Two days later, the results came in.They dragged in a former hotel security guard—flew him back from some town miles away to the Bureau. The second he heard how bad this could get, he went pale and cracked."Two months ago, I was outside Ms. Sweeney's office. Heard her arguing on speaker. Sounded like her husband's grandfather. He had proof—her affair, a kid—and wanted to expose her, make his grandson divorce her."I watched the recording, fists clenched so tight my fingers went white. So Grandpa knew. He knew

The baby's cries echoed down the hall, making Danny flinch. He mumbled, "The boy... sperm bank. I used the commission from that deal you signed to pay for it. Slipped the doctor some cash, told you it was a routine check, but it was insemination. You're healthy. It worked the first time."Talia looked ready to rip him apart."And this one?" she snapped, eyes bloodshot, pointing at the baby."That donor wasn't cheap either. I wanted to save money... so I had my cousin come by a few times, and then... it just happened... And you—don't say that. They're your kids. Your blood."The crowd gasped. No one expected that from quiet, mild Danny."Dude's cold. Got her pregnant by two different men and still played dad. That's wild.""And she never noticed the kids didn't look like him?"Talia screamed and lunged. "You set me up, you bastard!"Danny dodged. The boy nearby got shoved down the stairs.Blood spread across the floor. The kid lay still. No one knew if he'd make it.Talia di

Talia looked at me, then at Danny. "What? Azoospermia?"She burst out laughing, clutching her stomach. Took her a good ten seconds to calm down."Jerome, seriously? You're embarrassed, so now you're stirring drama? Fine, I'll say it—the kids are Danny's. Both of them!"She wrapped her arms around Danny and kissed the baby."These are his. What, you can't have kids so now you're jealous? Making up gross lies?"I met her stare, cold. "I don't play like that. No need to argue. Take him for another test. I'll cover it. The results'll speak. But..."I tossed the reports at her, flicking a glance at Danny—he was already pale."You might wanna read those. Neither kid's his. They don't even have the same father."Talia snapped toward him. "Danny, what is this? Tell me. The kids are yours—you gave them to me!"Danny dropped his gaze, wouldn't look at her."Answer me!" she snapped. "Are they or not?"His legs gave out. He hit the floor, tried to get up twice, failed."T-Talia... don'

Talia froze for a second, then looked us over—and burst out laughing, pointing straight at me."No wonder, Jerome. No wonder you're acting so bold today." She smirked. "So you found yourself some old woman to back you up. Seriously? You've got zero standards—you'll take anything."Her gaze flicked to Naomi. "And you even had her pretend to be the Director of the Business Compliance Bureau. What, you think I'm stupid?"Go on. Name your price. You just want money, right? Say it, take it, and get out."The staff started whispering."So that's the deal—he came here to make a scene for cash. Didn't work, so he brought in fake backup. Too bad Ms. Sweeney's too smart for that.""She doesn't even look that old. And she's in on this scam? Seriously..."Hearing them, Talia straightened, smug again. She looked Naomi up and down, pure disdain. "I'm giving you one last chance. Apologize, walk out, save yourself the embarrassment. Otherwise, when the cops show up, you won't be able to handle
