Chapter 3

Author: Bloom Confetti
Did I hear that right? She was threatening me?

Ever since we got married, I worked from home and barely showed up at the company. She figured I was jobless, living off her—throwing me a thousand bucks a month so I wouldn't starve.

I never touched it. Everything I wore, everything I owned—it was all custom. She just couldn't tell.

So to her, I was just some stray waiting for scraps.

"Talia, I'm not interested in your pocket change."

She didn't snap. She laughed, turning to the crowd.

"Sorry you all had to see this. He's my husband's old benefactor—did him a favor once. Out of gratitude, I've been covering his food and clothes. Guess it wasn't enough. Now he's here trying to wreck our family."

Just like that, she flipped everything—swapped me with Danny and made me the pathetic leech.

I pressed my tongue to my burning cheek and walked straight at her, face cold.

Danny flinched, backing up. "Jerome, wh-what are you doing? We can talk. Talia can give you more money!"

He ducked behind her. She stepped in front, blocking me.

"Jerome, that's enough."

I stared at her, blank.

"Talia Sweeney. Since when is Danny my benefactor? And when did I ever extort him?"

She rubbed her temples, annoyed, glancing at the crowd.

"Enough, Jerome. No matter what, you don't touch my kids. I can—"

Smack.

I hit her full force. She went down hard.

Talia clutched her face and screamed.

"Disgusting. You made me dirty my hands."

She'd never been humiliated like this in public. Her glare turned vicious.

"If you're done, get out. My husband's merciful—otherwise, you'd already be in cuffs. Be smart and leave. Or I'll cut off your allowance. Don't come begging later."

"So you think money makes you untouchable? You're unbelievable."

She lifted her chin, smug. "Money's not all I have. Let me show you what else I can do.

"Security, grab him!"

Then she pulled out her phone and opened the chat app, turning the screen just enough for me to see.

"Your grandfather just had a heart transplant overseas, right? If I call him now... you think that surgery meant nothing?"

Grandpa—he only cared about me.

I struggled hard.

"You wouldn't dare! If anything happens to my grandfather, I won't let it slide. First thing I'll do is throw you out of Cresthaven Hotel!"

Her face snapped, rage taking over.

"You? Throw me out? Who the hell do you think you are?"

"Because I'm the chairman of Cresthaven!"

"You know how weak you got after giving birth. That's why you lied about business trips and disappeared for months." I frowned. "And all that 'humiliation' you keep bringing up? My family and I never saw you that way."Remember your first deal? I couldn't watch you run yourself into the ground, so I met the partner myself and locked it in for you."Then you talked for three hours straight about that useless project. I cleaned it up and sent it over like it was your work."And the Blue Sky project you bragged about for days? Trading two junk plots under Cresthaven for prime commercial land—you really think that was your persistence?"Business runs on profit. Why would they care about you? I used company resources to make it happen and told them not to mention me."Talia, every step you took—I laid it out for you. Without me, you would've crashed."I pulled you up. Covered for you. Made you look good."I thought I was helping you grow. But you took everything and turned around, sa

I couldn't make sense of it. Was it really just about kids? After all these years, did everything my family did mean nothing? For a child, she cheated—and kept pushing Grandpa back into relapse.Talia went quiet, then laughed."Jerome, you'll never get it!" Her eyes were bloodshot. "You never had to fight for anything. The stuff I clawed for years to get—you just handed over with a word. Your charity? It suffocated me. You hear me?"Her voice shot up. "That internship I nearly killed myself for—you handled it with one call. That project I spent three months landing—I wanted to celebrate, and you just smiled and handed me a year's salary."What was I to you? Worse than a stray dog? Every second you reminded me—no matter how hard I worked, I'd never match one move, one word from you. And that old man—always sending jewelry. What, to mock me for not being able to afford it?"Her voice shook. "But I couldn't even be mad. I had to smile and take it. So I kept pushing—again and again—j

Grandpa barely got the words out before he went still."Doctor! Get a doctor!" I slammed the call button.Doctors and nurses rushed in. Once they confirmed he'd only passed out from weakness, I finally dropped onto the couch. But those unfinished words had already set Naomi off.She turned to her staff. "Call Arlencia. Reinvestigate everything on Talia from the past seven years. Anything tied to my grandfather goes first. Don't miss a thing."No one dared question her.Two days later, the results came in.They dragged in a former hotel security guard—flew him back from some town miles away to the Bureau. The second he heard how bad this could get, he went pale and cracked."Two months ago, I was outside Ms. Sweeney's office. Heard her arguing on speaker. Sounded like her husband's grandfather. He had proof—her affair, a kid—and wanted to expose her, make his grandson divorce her."I watched the recording, fists clenched so tight my fingers went white. So Grandpa knew. He knew

The baby's cries echoed down the hall, making Danny flinch. He mumbled, "The boy... sperm bank. I used the commission from that deal you signed to pay for it. Slipped the doctor some cash, told you it was a routine check, but it was insemination. You're healthy. It worked the first time."Talia looked ready to rip him apart."And this one?" she snapped, eyes bloodshot, pointing at the baby."That donor wasn't cheap either. I wanted to save money... so I had my cousin come by a few times, and then... it just happened... And you—don't say that. They're your kids. Your blood."The crowd gasped. No one expected that from quiet, mild Danny."Dude's cold. Got her pregnant by two different men and still played dad. That's wild.""And she never noticed the kids didn't look like him?"Talia screamed and lunged. "You set me up, you bastard!"Danny dodged. The boy nearby got shoved down the stairs.Blood spread across the floor. The kid lay still. No one knew if he'd make it.Talia di

Talia looked at me, then at Danny. "What? Azoospermia?"She burst out laughing, clutching her stomach. Took her a good ten seconds to calm down."Jerome, seriously? You're embarrassed, so now you're stirring drama? Fine, I'll say it—the kids are Danny's. Both of them!"She wrapped her arms around Danny and kissed the baby."These are his. What, you can't have kids so now you're jealous? Making up gross lies?"I met her stare, cold. "I don't play like that. No need to argue. Take him for another test. I'll cover it. The results'll speak. But..."I tossed the reports at her, flicking a glance at Danny—he was already pale."You might wanna read those. Neither kid's his. They don't even have the same father."Talia snapped toward him. "Danny, what is this? Tell me. The kids are yours—you gave them to me!"Danny dropped his gaze, wouldn't look at her."Answer me!" she snapped. "Are they or not?"His legs gave out. He hit the floor, tried to get up twice, failed."T-Talia... don'

Talia froze for a second, then looked us over—and burst out laughing, pointing straight at me."No wonder, Jerome. No wonder you're acting so bold today." She smirked. "So you found yourself some old woman to back you up. Seriously? You've got zero standards—you'll take anything."Her gaze flicked to Naomi. "And you even had her pretend to be the Director of the Business Compliance Bureau. What, you think I'm stupid?"Go on. Name your price. You just want money, right? Say it, take it, and get out."The staff started whispering."So that's the deal—he came here to make a scene for cash. Didn't work, so he brought in fake backup. Too bad Ms. Sweeney's too smart for that.""She doesn't even look that old. And she's in on this scam? Seriously..."Hearing them, Talia straightened, smug again. She looked Naomi up and down, pure disdain. "I'm giving you one last chance. Apologize, walk out, save yourself the embarrassment. Otherwise, when the cops show up, you won't be able to handle
