Chapter 4

Autor: Marvelous Meow
Erin stood in the kitchen doorway at 6:00 am while I was making coffee. She hadn't slept well the night before, so her long hair was disheveled, and there were dark circles under her eyes.

"Richard, I was too harsh last night."

It was one of the few times she had ever lowered herself like this.

In the past, whenever she did this, I would swallow all my grievances and let them go. This time, I merely poured the coffee into the cup and nodded.

Erin took a step closer. "I'll have the ring fixed, and I'll have someone recreate the boutonniere too."

"You can't replace that."

Erin fell silent.

On the table, her phone vibrated, and I caught sight of Mark's name. She declined the call. Within two seconds, it rang again. Erin answered this time, lowering her voice. "What is it?"

Mark's anxious voice came through the phone, "Erin, my parents saw the video. They called me shameless and told me to get out. I don't know what to do."

Erin glanced at me. "I'll go over later."

I picked up my coffee.

She said, "I need to take care of this."

I asked, "Do you remember what today is?"

Erin paused.

Today was supposed to be the day we went in for our IVF evaluation. All these years, I had always wanted a child. Erin used to say there was no rush. Later, she said life was already too boring to take on the responsibility of having a child.

After the fake wedding last year, I became depressed for a long time. She comforted me and promised that we would seriously start trying for a baby after our anniversary this year, and I believed her.

The appointment slip was still stuck to the refrigerator.

It was evident that Erin had just remembered. "We can still make it this afternoon."

I looked at her. "We have an appointment at 9:00 am."

Erin frowned. "Richard, Mark is pretty shaken up right now."

"So?"

Her voice turned frosty. "Can you stop comparing everything to him? Something might happen to him."

I laughed. "Something could happen to me too."

Erin froze.

I pulled open the drawer and took out the appointment slip. "The doctor said I've been under too much stress these past two years, and my test results aren't good. Did you know that?"

She swallowed hard. "You didn't tell me."

"I did." My eyes focused on her. "You were just too busy discussing the schedule for that fake wedding last year with Mark and the others."

Erin's face turned ashen.

Just then, the doorbell rang, and she went to answer it. An upset-looking Mark stood outside, his hair a mess. He immediately grabbed Erin's arm. "Erin, I don't have anywhere else to go."

Erin instinctively clasped his hand, then placed her other hand on his back. Her gesture was so practiced that my eyes stung.

Mark saw me and hurriedly pulled away. "Richard, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to."

Erin said, "Let him stay at our place today."

"Our place?"

She didn't look at me. "Just for today."

Mark spoke softly, "I can sleep on the couch. I won't be a bother."

I looked at him. "No need for that."

A hopeful glimmer appeared in his eyes. Erin also let out a sigh of relief.

I walked into the bedroom and took out my suitcase.

Erin's expression changed. "Richard, what are you doing?"

As I took a few of my clothes out of the closet, I said, "I'm leaving."

She tried to stop me. "You're leaving home over something so small?"

"I'm not." I sidestepped her. "I'm separating from you."

Mark fell silent.

Erin seemed genuinely hurt for the first time, her voice dropping. "Say that again."

I finally looked at her. "Erin, we're separating. My lawyer will contact you about the next steps."

She stared at me before suddenly bursting into laughter. "Lawyer? Richard, are you playing along with this year's theme?"

I didn't respond.

Erin kicked my suitcase. "If you're done throwing a tantrum, let's go to the hospital. I'll accompany you."

Her phone rang again. This time, it was from Mark's mother. When Mark noticed the caller, he trembled in fear.

Erin went over to the balcony. "Hi, Mrs. Levine."

I picked up my suitcase.

Mark stood behind me, asking softly, "Richard, you're not going to leave, are you?"

As I zipped the suitcase up, he continued, "You always say you can't stand these pranks, but Erin always manages to sweet-talk you into forgiving her."

I looked at him. A trace of provocation remained in his eyes, and the corners of his lips curved into the faintest of smiles.

"You can't live without Erin."

The balcony door opened, and Erin said, "Richard, we'll go to the hospital another day. Mark's parents are coming over. I need to settle this for him."

I nodded.

Erin thought I had given in, her features softening. "Go rest in the room. Let's talk again after I'm done settling this."

She realized something was wrong and hurried after me as I headed for the door. "Richard."

I unlocked the door. The mover I had booked the night before was standing outside. He glanced between us. "Mr. Topp, should I start?"

The color slowly drained from Erin's face.

I placed the keys on the entryway table. "Yeah."

The weather was fantastic on the day we finalized our divorce. Erin showed up early, wearing a light-colored trench coat, her hair pulled back just as it had been when we got married seven years ago.She had been smiling that day. Today, she wasn't.The clerk handed us the documents. I placed mine into the bag. Erin held hers for a long time, gazing down at it.She called out my name and took a small box out of her pocket. A bitter smile appeared on her face when I refused to accept it. "It's not the ring."Erin opened it, revealing a plain silver pendant shaped like a tiny star. "You mentioned wanting to buy this back in college, but in the end, you decided against it so you could get me a birthday gift."I had almost forgotten about it, yet she remembered. So, it wasn't that she couldn't remember. She just hadn't been willing to bring it out before.Erin placed it on the chair beside her. "I don't expect you to keep it. I just wanted to return it to the person you were back the

Mark came to me in the final week before I finalized my divorce from Erin. He stood outside my company entrance and waited for a long time. When he saw me, he immediately straightened up. He had lost a significant amount of weight, and there was exhaustion in his eyes."Richard, I need to talk to you.""We don't have anything to talk about."Mark blocked my path. "My family's projects got suspended, and my dad is planning to send me abroad. I've deleted all those videos and my alternate account. Can you get Erin to let me off the hook?"I glanced at him. "You've come to the wrong person."Despair appeared on his face. "But she's like this because of you."I smiled. "Even now, you still think everything is someone else's fault."Mark clenched his fists tight. "Tell me. What do you want? Should I kneel?"Passersby glanced over as his voice grew louder. "I admit I crossed the line. I admit I enjoyed seeing you humiliated. But you're fine, aren't you? You have a good job, and Erin

I was on a business trip on the day of Erin's birthday. By the time I finished my afternoon meeting, my phone was flooded with messages. Some asked if I was really not coming back. Some mentioned that Erin had drunk too much. Someone even sent a video. In the video, a birthday cake without candles sat on the table. Erin sat in the middle of the group.Mark held a wine glass, looking upset. "Erin, happy birthday. I was too immature. I'm the reason you and Richard ended up like this."Erin didn't take the drink. She looked into the camera, her voice hoarse. "Quiet."A silence enveloped the room.Mark's expression stiffened, and Nathan stepped in to smooth things over. "Erin, Mark meant well."Erin looked up at him. "Did you mean well when you all made fun of Richard back then, too?"No one said anything.Erin grabbed her phone and opened a file. The big screen suddenly lit up. On it were clips of all the so-called surprises they had filmed over the years. Two years ago, when th

Erin was late on the day we were supposed to file for divorce. I sat in the courthouse lobby, watching the clock tick past 20 minutes. My lawyer asked, "Mr. Topp, do you want to reschedule?"I shook my head. "Just give her ten more minutes."Nine minutes later, Erin showed up, dressed in a black coat. She was holding a paper bag. Her hair was slightly disheveled. She then explained, "The traffic was bad."I didn't bother asking if she was telling the truth.Erin handed the paper bag to me. "The cheesecake from that shop you like."I didn't take it.Erin froze, lowering her voice. "It's still hot."I used to love the cheesecake, but Erin had only bought it for me once because of the long queues at that store. However, when Mark said he liked chocolate cookies, she made sure to keep track of every new batch.I told her, "I don't like cakes anymore."Erin lowered her gaze.We went inside to sign the papers when it was our turn. Erin's fingers hovered over the paper for a long

For the first time, Erin didn't play along with the joke.At 9:00 pm, she appeared below my apartment. Rain was falling, but she wasn't carrying an umbrella, and the shoulders of her trench coat were soaked. When I went downstairs to take out the trash, I noticed Erin standing beside her car, smoking. She didn't use to smoke, claiming the smell would linger on her clothes and make me uncomfortable. When Erin spotted me, she immediately stubbed out the cigarette. "Richard."I tossed the trash into the bin. She walked over, her voice softer now. "I've kept it under wraps at the company. No one saw it.""Good for you," I replied. She looked at me, as if not knowing what to say.In the past, I was always the one chasing after her, trying to explain myself. This time, she finally got a taste of what it was like when her words fell on deaf ears."I've read the divorce papers.""Okay.""I don't agree to it."I looked at her.Erin hurriedly added, "I'm not threatening you. Erin stood downstairs as the moving truck pulled away. She didn't chase after it. She only watched me, as if this were a joke that hadn't ended yet.I hailed a cab and gave the driver the address of an apartment near my company. I rented this place three months ago. After the fake wedding last year, I started preparing to leave. But at the time, I still hadn't completely given up. I thought Erin would change and realize that I wasn't a prop in all her pranks. I thought that after one of her jokes, she would finally hug me and say she wouldn't do it again. But the change never came. The apartment was tiny, and an old desk stood by the window. I opened my suitcase, and the first thing I took out was a stack of medical records. The doctor had said I'd been under too much stress for too long and that my sleep had been badly affected. He recommended that we put our plans to have a baby on hold. When I brought the records home that day, Erin was practicing vows for the fake wedding wit
