Chapter 3

Autor: Marvelous Meow
I had just finished tying up the trash bag when more than a dozen people filed into the living room.

Erin sat on the couch, her expression cold, while Mark stood beside her, looking like a child who had done something wrong.

The moment their friends walked in, they started blabbering.

"Richard, we're practically family. Is a public shaming session really necessary?"

"Erin even went to the trouble of calling us here. You should appreciate that."

"Fine. We'll apologize. Who wants to go first?"

They didn't sound like they were here to apologize. Instead, it sounded like warm-up banter before another game.

Erin looked at me. "They are all here. You can speak now."

I stood beside the coffee table where the ring lay.

Someone noticed it then and joked, "Wow, he still hasn't put his ring back on! He's really holding onto that grudge today."

Mark immediately spoke up, "Stop egging him on. Richard is really mad."

But the more he tried to talk them out of it, the louder their mockery grew.

One of them, named Nathan Ziegler, connected his phone to the TV. "How about we do a replay and see exactly at what point Richard lost his cool?"

The TV lit up, showing the private room from earlier that evening.

Mark was holding the prenatal test report, and I was standing in front of him, looking pale. Erin stayed silent, merely looking at me with a smile.

Nathan paused the video and pointed at the TV. "Erin couldn't keep a straight face here. She was trying so hard not to laugh."

Everyone broke out laughing.

Erin frowned. "Nathan, turn it off."

Nathan ignored her and resumed the video. It showed me taking off my ring and telling them that I was not playing along anymore. The camera wobbled for a moment, capturing Mark nearby, trying to suppress a smile.

Group chat notifications kept popping up across the top of Nathan's phone screen.

"Richard's acting is really good this time."

"Erin, your husband is quite something."

"I bet 100 dollars that they'll make up by tomorrow."

Erin stood up abruptly and switched off the TV. "Enough!"

The group fell silent.

I looked at her. "You think that's enough too?"

She avoided my gaze. "They just took the video for fun. No one actually wanted to hurt you."

"Oh? So that makes it okay to keep hurting me?"

Nathan mumbled, "Richard, why are you making such a big deal out of this? We didn't post the video publicly. I only sent it to our group chat."

Mark's face paled. He instinctively glanced at Erin.

I caught it, and so did she. Her voice dropped. "Mark, you posted the video?"

Mark clenched his fists. "I posted it to my Instagram Story, which was visible only to friends, and deleted it soon after."

Erin's expression darkened. "Who told you to post it?"

Mark looked upset. "I thought everyone would find the video funny. I didn't expect Richard to be so bothered by it."

Erin closed her eyes in irritation. Then, she looked at me. "He's already deleted it. Stop dwelling on it."

She said it again.

When Mark damaged my computer, she told me to let it go. When he joked at my promotion party that I had gotten ahead by riding on Erin's coattails, she told me to let it go. When he dug out my test reports and showed them to their friends, joking that he should start preparing to be a godfather, she still told me to let it go.

I suddenly realized that Erin did understand boundaries after all. She had simply allowed others to step on mine.

I walked over to the entryway and grabbed my car keys.

Erin immediately stopped me. "Where are you going this time?"

"To the hotel."

"For what?"

Mark pulled on the hem of her shirt. "Erin, stop arguing with Richard. I'll leave. This is all my fault."

He turned too abruptly, stumbled, and bumped into the coffee table. The ring rolled off and landed beside the trash bag.

Erin steadied him almost instinctively. "Be careful."

The others surrounded him.

"Mark, are you okay?"

"Did you sprain your ankle?"

"Erin, quick. Check on him."

I bent down to pick up the ring, but Mark stepped on it first. As if he hadn't noticed, Mark said remorsefully, "Richard, please don't leave. I'm really sorry."

I looked at the sliver of silver beneath his shoes.

Erin followed my gaze and frowned. "Mark, lift your foot."

Mark hurriedly stepped back, revealing the ring that had been crushed out of shape.

Silence enveloped the living room.

Erin picked the ring up. "I'll get it fixed tomorrow."

I took it from her and looked at the date of our wedding engraved on the inside of the band. Now, the numbers were crooked. "No need."

Erin looked at me as I threw the deformed ring into the trash bag, along with the suit and the ruined boutonniere.

The weather was fantastic on the day we finalized our divorce. Erin showed up early, wearing a light-colored trench coat, her hair pulled back just as it had been when we got married seven years ago.She had been smiling that day. Today, she wasn't.The clerk handed us the documents. I placed mine into the bag. Erin held hers for a long time, gazing down at it.She called out my name and took a small box out of her pocket. A bitter smile appeared on her face when I refused to accept it. "It's not the ring."Erin opened it, revealing a plain silver pendant shaped like a tiny star. "You mentioned wanting to buy this back in college, but in the end, you decided against it so you could get me a birthday gift."I had almost forgotten about it, yet she remembered. So, it wasn't that she couldn't remember. She just hadn't been willing to bring it out before.Erin placed it on the chair beside her. "I don't expect you to keep it. I just wanted to return it to the person you were back the

Mark came to me in the final week before I finalized my divorce from Erin. He stood outside my company entrance and waited for a long time. When he saw me, he immediately straightened up. He had lost a significant amount of weight, and there was exhaustion in his eyes."Richard, I need to talk to you.""We don't have anything to talk about."Mark blocked my path. "My family's projects got suspended, and my dad is planning to send me abroad. I've deleted all those videos and my alternate account. Can you get Erin to let me off the hook?"I glanced at him. "You've come to the wrong person."Despair appeared on his face. "But she's like this because of you."I smiled. "Even now, you still think everything is someone else's fault."Mark clenched his fists tight. "Tell me. What do you want? Should I kneel?"Passersby glanced over as his voice grew louder. "I admit I crossed the line. I admit I enjoyed seeing you humiliated. But you're fine, aren't you? You have a good job, and Erin

I was on a business trip on the day of Erin's birthday. By the time I finished my afternoon meeting, my phone was flooded with messages. Some asked if I was really not coming back. Some mentioned that Erin had drunk too much. Someone even sent a video. In the video, a birthday cake without candles sat on the table. Erin sat in the middle of the group.Mark held a wine glass, looking upset. "Erin, happy birthday. I was too immature. I'm the reason you and Richard ended up like this."Erin didn't take the drink. She looked into the camera, her voice hoarse. "Quiet."A silence enveloped the room.Mark's expression stiffened, and Nathan stepped in to smooth things over. "Erin, Mark meant well."Erin looked up at him. "Did you mean well when you all made fun of Richard back then, too?"No one said anything.Erin grabbed her phone and opened a file. The big screen suddenly lit up. On it were clips of all the so-called surprises they had filmed over the years. Two years ago, when th

Erin was late on the day we were supposed to file for divorce. I sat in the courthouse lobby, watching the clock tick past 20 minutes. My lawyer asked, "Mr. Topp, do you want to reschedule?"I shook my head. "Just give her ten more minutes."Nine minutes later, Erin showed up, dressed in a black coat. She was holding a paper bag. Her hair was slightly disheveled. She then explained, "The traffic was bad."I didn't bother asking if she was telling the truth.Erin handed the paper bag to me. "The cheesecake from that shop you like."I didn't take it.Erin froze, lowering her voice. "It's still hot."I used to love the cheesecake, but Erin had only bought it for me once because of the long queues at that store. However, when Mark said he liked chocolate cookies, she made sure to keep track of every new batch.I told her, "I don't like cakes anymore."Erin lowered her gaze.We went inside to sign the papers when it was our turn. Erin's fingers hovered over the paper for a long

For the first time, Erin didn't play along with the joke.At 9:00 pm, she appeared below my apartment. Rain was falling, but she wasn't carrying an umbrella, and the shoulders of her trench coat were soaked. When I went downstairs to take out the trash, I noticed Erin standing beside her car, smoking. She didn't use to smoke, claiming the smell would linger on her clothes and make me uncomfortable. When Erin spotted me, she immediately stubbed out the cigarette. "Richard."I tossed the trash into the bin. She walked over, her voice softer now. "I've kept it under wraps at the company. No one saw it.""Good for you," I replied. She looked at me, as if not knowing what to say.In the past, I was always the one chasing after her, trying to explain myself. This time, she finally got a taste of what it was like when her words fell on deaf ears."I've read the divorce papers.""Okay.""I don't agree to it."I looked at her.Erin hurriedly added, "I'm not threatening you. I just

Erin stood downstairs as the moving truck pulled away. She didn't chase after it. She only watched me, as if this were a joke that hadn't ended yet.I hailed a cab and gave the driver the address of an apartment near my company. I rented this place three months ago. After the fake wedding last year, I started preparing to leave. But at the time, I still hadn't completely given up. I thought Erin would change and realize that I wasn't a prop in all her pranks. I thought that after one of her jokes, she would finally hug me and say she wouldn't do it again. But the change never came. The apartment was tiny, and an old desk stood by the window. I opened my suitcase, and the first thing I took out was a stack of medical records. The doctor had said I'd been under too much stress for too long and that my sleep had been badly affected. He recommended that we put our plans to have a baby on hold. When I brought the records home that day, Erin was practicing vows for the fake wedding wit
