LOGINOlivia's POV
I stepped back so fast I nearly knocked over the chair behind me.
"Lily." My voice came out really loud. I cleared my throat and tried again. "Sweetheart, go finish your show, okay? I'll bring your food in a minute."
Her eyes went from me, to Adrian, then back to me, narrowing the way she always did when she was trying to figure something out.
"Mom, were you kissing your boss just now?"
"What? No." I said quickly, my face already heating up.
"You were." She crossed her arms. "I saw it."
"You didn't see anything, baby, Mr. Adrian was just…" I glanced at him for help. He was of no help at all. He just stood there with his arms crossed too, clearly enjoying this. "He was just leaving."
"Then why was his hand on your face?"
I opened my mouth but nothing came out. I thought we moved before she came in.
She tilted her head. "Are you guys dating?"
"No…." I said too quickly again, I hated how obvious I was being.
"You sound like you're lying."
"I'm not lying, why would I lie, we really weren't…."
"You always say I'm a bad liar because my voice gets funny." She pointed at me like she'd caught me in the act. "Your voice just got funny."
Behind me, I heard the smallest sound from Adrian, it sounded like a laugh he was trying very hard to swallow. I shot him a look that told him exactly what I thought of that.
"Lily," I said, kneeling down to her level. "Mr. Adrian and I were just talking about something grown-up. It's boring, I promise."
"Mom kissing isn't talking."
I glanced at Adrian again, silently begging him to say something…anything, that wouldn't make this worse.
"Your mom's right," he said, crouching down beside her. "It's very boring grown-up stuff. Contracts, paperwork and all that."
She squinted at him. "You don't kiss people about paperwork."
"No," Adrian admitted, I could hear the amusement he wasn't even bothering to hide anymore. "No, you don't."
"So you were kissing."
"Lily." My voice cracked. "Please go watch your show."
She crossed her arms, mimicking me perfectly. "Fine….But I'm not stupid, Mommy."
I sighed. "I know you're not."
"I'm just going to pretend I believe you," she said, already turning to walk back toward the living room.
The second she disappeared around the corner, I let out the breath I'd been holding since she came through that door.
"Lily," I called after her, "you can watch cartoons until dinner's ready, okay?"
"Really?" Her head popped back around the corner, her eyes lighting up. On a normal day I gave her twenty minutes, no more. She knew this was a bribe, she took it anyway. "Okay!"
The TV volume climbed a few seconds later, some cheerful theme song filling the apartment.
I turned back to Adrian. "You should go."
He didn't move, he stayed glued to that spot.
"Adrian. You need to leave, before she comes back in and sa…”
"We're not done." He interjected, pulling out the same kitchen chair he'd sat in minutes ago and lowered himself into it like this was his kitchen and not mine.
My hands curled at my sides. "I think we said everything that needed to be said."
"We didn't say anything." His eyes tracked me as I crossed my arms, putting the counter between us.
"You reacted. That's different from having a real conversation."
"What do you want from me, Adrain?"
"I want to be clear," he said, "about what happens next. Because I don't think you understand your position."
"My position." I laughed. "She's my daughter."
"She's my daughter too. Legally, biologically, in every way that matters." He said calmly. "And right now, on paper, I have no rights to her at all. I intend to fix that."
My stomach dropped. "Fix it how?"
"There are two ways this goes." He held up one finger. "One….You marry me, we raise her together, under my name…. as a family. She grows up knowing exactly who her father is instead of being told lies about him."
"I never lied to her about…."
"Two." He kept going like I hadn't spoken. "You refuse…” He smirked. “... I pursue full legal custody. Every lawyer my money can buy, every resource and every angle. I will not stop until a judge hands her to me and you get supervised visits on weekends, if you're lucky."
The room tilted. "You wouldn't."
"Test me."
"You're threatening me." My voice shook. "You're standing in my kitchen threatening to take my daughter from me."
"I'm giving you a choice here, Olivia" He rose from the chair. "Most people don't get one."
"This isn't a choice, this is blackmail."I shook my head in disbelief.
"Call it whatever you want." He reached for his jacket, draped over the back of the chair. "The outcome doesn't change."
I stared at him, my mind scrambling for some argument that would make him see how insane this was but nothing came. Every version of ‘you can't do this’ died in my throat, because I knew, I knew with a sick certainty, that he could. He had the money, he had the name. He had lawyers who'd bury me before I even understood what hit me.
"You have until Friday," he said, shrugging the jacket on. "Marry me, Olivia….Or lose her trying to fight me."
He didn't wait for an answer. He walked past me, unlocking the door and stepped out into the hallway without a single glance back.
The door clicked shut, leaving me alone with my thoughts.
Olivia's POVBy six in the morning I'd already gone through three cups of coffee and every excuse I could think of not to make the call. At seven, I made it anyway.Marissa Chen had been a family lawyer for almost ten years. We'd met at Lily's old daycare, back when her son was in the same class, back before I even had a reason to need a lawyer for anything. I'd kept her number in my phone the way you keep a fire extinguisher, hoping I'd never actually have to use it.She picked up on the second ring. "Olivia? It's early.""I know, I'm sorry. Just need to ask you something….Hypothetically.” I said quickly."Okay." She paused, could hear her moving somewhere quieter. "Go ahead.""If a father found out about a child, after years of not knowing... and he had a lot of money. Like, a lot. Could he actually win custody? Even if the mother's been the only parent the whole time?"The silence on the other end lasted a moment."Olivia. Is this hypothetical, or is this about you?"I closed my ey

Adrian's POVOlivia didn't ask why I had followed her into the kitchen. She just kept working. She stood at the counter with her back to me, finishing whatever she had decided to make. Every now and then, the spoon touched the side of the bowl, the only sound between us.I didn't say anything. She kept glancing at me secretly from the corner of her eye, waiting for me to start something. I let my eyes wander around instead. It was a small kitchen, nothing like the spaces I was used to. There were children's cups beside the sink, a few drawings held to the refrigerator with magnets, and a pair of tiny shoes abandoned near the doorway. I turned, my eyes found something at the door frame beside the kitchen entrance. Faint pencil marks, each one dated in Olivia's handwriting. A series of dates had been written beside small lines drawn across the wood.“2 yrs….3 yrs….4 yrs.” Climbing higher every year, all the way up to a line marked just a few months ago….Seven marks.I stood there, sta
Olivia's POV"What are you doing with my daughter?"I crossed the distance between us and rested a hand on Lily's shoulder, pulling her a little closer to me.Adrian stood from the bench, his attention moving from Lily to me. He didn't look surprised to see me. If anything, he looked like he'd been expecting this. "Olivia.""That's not an answer."Lily looked between us, her drawing still clutched in one hand, confusion pulling her small brows together. "Mommy, we were just talking."“I know, sweetheart.” I softened my voice for her, then looked back at Adrian. "Go get your bag from Miss Reyes, sweetheart." I kept my eyes on Adrian. "I'll be right there."Lily hesitated, glancing at Adrian like she was checking whether it was okay to leave him, that really bothered me. He gave her a small nod. Only then did she walk off, throwing one last curious look over her shoulder. The second she was out of earshot, I lowered my voice. "You can't just show up at her school." "I wanted to meet he
Adrian's POV"Come in."Ethan stepped inside, his tablet already in his hand. "Sir, the developers are waiting downstairs. We have about twenty minutes before the inspection."My eyes were still on the DNA report lying open on my desk. She had walked into this building every morning knowing exactly who I was, she had stood across from me, answered to my orders, looked me in the eye and pretended we were strangers. And all this time, she had known…she had known Lily was mine.My thumb pressed against the edge of the report as another thought settled into place. I looked at Ethan. "Cancel the inspection."He paused. "Cancel it?""Yes." I closed the report, pushing it aside."There's something else you're going to do for me."He came closer. "What is it?""I want every legal option available to me regarding Lily."His expression changed slightly, but he recovered quickly. "Custody?""Whatever applies."He unlocked his tablet. "If you're talking about custody, we'll need to establish you
Adrian's POVWe followed Olivia for nearly twenty minutes before the taxi finally turned through the gates of Maplewood General Hospital.I slowed the SUV and let the taxi disappear beneath the covered entrance.Olivia climbed out first, then opened the rear door, carefully lifting Lily into her arms, and hurried inside without looking around.I watched until the glass doors swallowed them."Five minutes," I said.Ethan glanced at me. "You want to go in now?""No….if she sees us, she'll leave."He nodded and pulled into a parking space farther down the lot.Five minutes felt longer than it should have. I kept looking toward the entrance, trying to make sense of what I had seen at the school. Lily's face had been burned into my mind, especially those eyes. I had spent years convincing myself that Olivia had simply chosen another life without me. Now there was a child who looked like she had been pulled straight out of my childhood photographs. When the five minutes were up, Ethan and I
