My hand was shaking over the paper.

The pen felt heavy in my wet hand. The rain was hitting the Range Rover roof loudly. My phone was ringing again in my bag. Mummy calling again.

Mr. Jidenna Cole, the billionaire that everybody in Port Harcourt fears, was holding my hand and waiting for me to sign a marriage certificate that would make me his wife in 9 hours.

"Why me?" I whispered, looking at him. "Sir, you can get any woman in Lagos, in Abuja, fine girls with big I*******m following. Why me? A small tailor from Peter Odili road?"

He looked at me. Really looked at me. From my wet hair, to my crying eyes, to my cheap church gown that was now soaking wet.

"Because you are not after my money," he said quietly. "Every other woman my mother brings wants my company. You didn't even know who I was the first time you met me last year when you came to deliver Tari's suit to my office. You looked at me and said 'Oga, your button is about to fall, let me help you fix it'. No woman has ever said that to me."

I remembered. I had gone to his office to deliver Tari's suit and I saw his suit button loose.

"You need a groom for tomorrow. I need a wife for 30 days. It's business," he continued. "But I promise you, Amara, in these 30 days, no one will ever insult you again. Not Tari, not your cousin, not anybody. You will be under my name. My protection."

20 million naira. My own boutique in GRA. That was money I would not make in 10 years of tailoring. With that, I could bring my mother out of the village. I could start a real business.

And revenge. Sweet revenge. The thought of Tari seeing me walk down the aisle to marry his boss... the boss he kneels to greet... that thought dried my tears a little.

I closed my eyes.

And I signed.

Amara Johnson.

As soon as I signed, he took the paper, signed the witness part, took a picture of it with his phone, and sent it to someone.

"Done. My lawyer will file it first thing tomorrow morning. By 8am tomorrow, you will legally be Mrs. Amara Cole."

He started the car. "Where do you live? I will take you to get your dress."

"No," I said quickly. "I can't go back there. They are there."

He nodded, understanding immediately. He drove instead to a big hotel I have only seen on I*******m. Hotel Presidential. He drove into the VIP entrance.

He came down and opened the door for me. The hotel staff rushed out with an umbrella when they saw his car plate number.

"Suite for my wife. And call Stella, the stylist, now. Tell her it's an emergency wedding. And call the makeup team," he said to the manager.

My wife.

The manager looked at me, soaked, in slippers, then at the billionaire, and didn't ask any questions. "Yes sir, immediately sir."

In 30 minutes, I was in a hot shower. In one hour, a team of 3 women arrived with boxes. Wedding hair, makeup, nails. They brought a steamer for my wedding dress that Mr. Jidenna's driver had gone to pick from my house while Tari and Blessing had been kicked out by his security.

At 4am, I looked in the mirror. I couldn't recognize myself. My skin was glowing. My hair was laid perfectly. My white wedding dress that I sewed myself now looked like a designer's dress because of the way they styled it.

I looked beautiful. But my eyes were still scared.

A knock on the door. He came in. He had also changed. He was now wearing a black tuxedo. He looked like a god. Like a movie star. His beard was freshly trimmed.

He stopped when he saw me. For the first time since I knew him, his cold face softened.

"You look... stunning," he said quietly.

I blushed. No man had ever looked at me like that.

He brought out a small blue box. He opened it. A diamond ring. Big. Sparkling. It must have cost more than my whole shop.

"This is for tomorrow. For show. After 30 days you return it," he said, but his voice was gentle as he slid it onto my finger. It fit perfectly, as if it was made for me.

"Thank you," I whispered.

"It's 5am. Our wedding is at 10am. You should rest for one hour. I will be in the sitting room," he said.

He was about to leave when I held his hand. "Sir... what if I fail? What if your mother doesn't like me? What if everybody laughs at me?"

He turned. He tucked a stray hair behind my ear. His hand was warm.

"Listen to me, Amara. From today, you are not that tailor that people can laugh at. You are Mrs. Cole. My wife. And anyone who laughs at you will answer to me. Do you understand?"

I nodded, tears in my eyes again, but this time not from pain.

At 9:30am, we arrived at my wedding hall in GRA. The same hall I booked for me and Tari.

My mother was outside, shouting on phone. My friends were looking confused. Pastor was checking his watch. And there, in front, were Tari and Blessing. Tari was wearing the senator suit I sewed for him. Blessing was wearing a pink aso-ebi, smiling like she had won.

They saw the Range Rover stop.

They saw the driver open the door.

They saw Me come down in my white wedding dress, looking like a queen, with Mr. Jidenna Cole, their billionaire boss, in a tuxedo holding my hand.

The whole compound went silent. Complete silence. You could hear a pin drop.

Tari's mouth opened. His face went white. Like he had seen a ghost.

Blessing's smile disappeared.

My mother ran to me. "Amara! What is happening? Where is Tari? Who is this man?"

Before I could answer, Jidenna stepped forward, held my waist, and said loud enough for everybody to hear, including Tari.

"Good morning Mama. Good morning everyone. Sorry we are late. I am Jidenna Cole. Amara's husband. Thank you all for coming to OUR wedding."

Tari took one step forward, his voice shaking with anger and shock.

"Amara? What nonsense is this? You... you and my boss? You..."

Jidenna looked at him. Cold. Deadly cold. The look that makes staff tremble at his office.

"Tari Johnson," he said. "You are fired. And you are not welcome at my wedding. Security, please remove this man and his companion from this premises."

Two huge security men appeared from nowhere and grabbed Tari and Blessing.

Blessing started shouting, "Amara! You cannot do this! He is your fiance!"

I looked at her, and for the first time in my life, I felt powerful. I held Jidenna's hand tighter.

"I don't know them," I said clearly. "Please start the music, Pastor. My husband and I want to get married."

The Pastor, confused but seeing the billionaire, quickly opened his Bible.

Tari was dragged out, shouting my name.

And as the music started and I started walking down the aisle with my new 30-day husband, my phone vibrated in my small purse.

It was a message from an unknown number: "If you marry him tomorrow, you will regret it. He killed his last wife. Ask him what happened to Sophia."

My blood went cold. My legs stopped walking.

  • My fiance boss wants me.   CHAPTER SEVENTEEN: The call

The phone was still ringing on the marble floor. Unknown number. The same number that sent the naked picture. The same number that sent the second picture of us in the living room. Vanessa was calling Amara directly. Twenty-three staff were still locked in the living room. One Tecno phone on the floor had no owner. The owner refused to claim it. That phone took the live picture of us one hour ago and sent it to press outside. That person was still inside this house. Jidenna looked at Amara. Amara's hands were shaking, but her eyes were sharp. That genius eyes that made Jidenna hire her as contract wife in the first place. "Answer it," Jidenna whispered. "Put it on speaker." Amara knelt and picked her phone. Her voice was cold. "Hello." A soft laugh came from the other side. A laugh Amara knew. Everyone in Lagos social circle knew that laugh. "Amara. The contract wife. How are you enjoying my house? My man?" Vanessa. Jidenna's first love. Sophia's best friend before Sophia d

  • My fiance boss wants me.   CHAPTER SIXTEEN: Blood money

The banging on the main gate got louder BOOM. BOOM. BOOM. It was not a knock. Someone was hitting it with a car. David's radio was screaming. "Sir! Press van trying to force gate! And madam's mother is shouting! She says if you don't open she will climb!" My mother climbing a gate? My mother who cannot walk fast without her knee pain? That alone told me something was terribly wrong. Jidenna looked at me. His eyes were asking me one question. What does your mother have to do with this? I didn't know. I swear I didn't know. "Open the small gate for her only," Jidenna ordered into David's radio. "No press. If any press enters, shoot in the air." David ran. The living room was still locked down. Twenty-three staff, twenty-three phones on the floor. The garden boy with the iPhone was now kneeling, crying. "Sir, I no know wetin dey for the video! Emeka say make I delete am, he go give me ten thousand!" The detective slapped handcuffs on him. "You will explain at the st

  • My fiance boss wants me.   CHAPTER FIFTEEN: The insider

The driver never reached the back door. David moved like a man half his size. He lunged, grabbed the driver by his collar, and slammed him hard against the wall. The sound echoed through the whole living room. The driver's cheap phone flew out of his hand and skidded across our marble floor, stopping near my feet. "Emeka! Na Emeka pay me!" He was shouting and crying at the same time, his hands up. "He pay me fifty thousand to cut the wire! He say na just for fifteen minutes! I no know about any picture, sir, I swear!" Jidenna didn't shout. That was what scared me most. His face went completely quiet. That cold, deadly quiet I had only seen once before. "Bring Emeka to me," he said to David, his voice low. "Now." But Mama Nkechi, our cook who has been with us for five years, was already shaking her head, tears running down her face. "He comot, sir. Ten minutes ago. He say him mama dey call am for village. He use kitchen door." He had run. Before anyone could move, my phone buzz

  • My fiance boss wants me.   CHAPTER FOURTEEN: Problems

The hallway outside the detective's office was no longer a hallway. It was a wall of noise, flashing light, and shouting voices. Camera shutters clicked like insects. Reporters pressed against the glass doors of the station, phones held high, shouting Jidenna's name, shouting my name, shouting Chika's name like they had known us all our lives. Someone in the crowd yelled, "Is it true you killed him because of her?" and the question landed in the small office like a stone thrown through a window. The detective cursed and slammed the blinds shut. "Who called them? This station location wasn't public. Who leaked that you were here?" Jidenna didn't answer. He was already pulling me toward the back exit, his hand locked around mine, his other hand holding his phone to his ear. "Cancel all access codes. Now. Change the gate code. Change the staff entrance. Change everything. No one in or out until I am back inside that compound. Do you understand me? No one." His head of security on the ot

The phone didn't stop ringing. On the detective's desk, the screen pulsed.*CHIKA*The detective stared at Jidenna. Jidenna stared at me."Put it on speaker," Jidenna said. The detective swiped."Hello?" he said, his voice all officer again, hard and flat. "Who is this?"Static. Then breathing. Fast, shallow. Then a woman's voice — but wrong. Hoarse. Broken." — don't come. Don't —""Chika?" I said before I could stop myself. I stepped forward. "Chika, is that you?"A sharp inhale on the other end. Like she recognized my voice and it terrified her."[Y/N]?" she whispered. It was her. It was really her. "You shouldn't — they said you went to the station — listen to me —"The line crackled violently.A second voice cut in. A man's. Calm. Too calm."She's not very good at following instructions."Chika made a sound. A choked sob.Jidenna's hand slammed down on the desk. "Who is this? Where is she?"The man laughed, soft. "You have a beautiful house, Jidenna. Very private. Shame about the

  • My fiance boss wants me.   CHAPTER TWELVE: The attack

The mansion changed in an instant. Minutes earlier, I had stood beside Jidenna, staring at the photograph and trying to understand how anyone could have captured us inside our bedroom without our knowledge. Now the walls seemed to lean inward. Every dark window looked like an eye. Every corner held a shape that vanished when I looked directly at it. The silence between distant sounds felt deliberate, as if the house itself were listening. The security team moved fast. Men swept through the garden, checked the windows, climbed onto the roof, searched along the walls, and tore through every room in the mansion. Curtains were yanked aside. Furniture scraped across the floors. Even the flowerpots outside our bedroom were lifted and examined. I stood beside Jidenna with my arms locked across my chest, trying to keep my hands from shaking. “Are you sure the picture was taken from outside?” the head of security asked. Jidenna turned toward him. “The angle tells me that,”
