I wanted to ask more, to understand what Cassian was talking about, but the words died as he pressed his lips to my skin again, slowly trailing from my shoulder up to my neck.

“You say you wouldn’t betray me, but I can’t trust you. I can’t trust anyone.”

There was more than distrust in his voice—there was resentment, pain.

“Who hurt you so badly?” The words slipped from my lips before I could stop them.

The look Cassian gave me was impossible to decipher. He didn’t seem angered by my question, but it was clear I wouldn’t get an answer. I bit my lip, curbing my curiosity, and he smiled. His eyes narrowed slightly, his lips parting just a fraction.

“I could answer, but first…” Cassian took my hand, lifting it to his face. The tip of his tongue brushed the inside of my wrist, warm. “Answer me honestly.”

“I have no reason to lie,” I replied promptly, making his smile widen even more.

“Then, if I told you that little punk has been deceiving you all this time, what wou

As soon as I was alone in the room, I started my research.Even though I had free access to Cassian’s office computer for my studies, it would be risky—the search history would be proof I was lying to him. So I used the excuse of studying to avoid being bothered and switched to searching on the phone Cassian had given me.I believed he wasn’t monitoring it because the box was sealed when he handed it to me. It would’ve been impossible to install any hacking software on the device.I began with simple, obvious things: my parents’ surnames and my mother’s maiden name. Then I dug deeper, but the results were far more terrifying than I’d imagined. There was no James Reed or Laura Reed. No marriage certificates, no legal records, no documents at all. Not even my birth certificate—which I kept in a hidden folder with other important papers—appeared on any government website.“That’s imposs

My heart raced, even though the request wasn’t suspicious. I’d lived so many years under Diane and Liam’s control, every contact with relatives cut off. It was only natural to be curious about whether I had any living family. My palms grew sweaty. Fear that Cassian might suspect something—even though the only evidence had been destroyed with the phone.“Can I know the reason for this sudden interest?” His tone seemed calm, but it was clear the topic displeased him. I swallowed hard, looking away to hide my discomfort at lying.“It’s not sudden. I’ve always been curious about my paternal and maternal grandparents, the fact I never met them. Not knowing if you have relatives, someone who could’ve saved you from a hellish life…” I bit my lip, fres

My hands shook, and I didn’t dare lift my gaze, afraid the driver would notice my sudden change. I stayed silent, watching houses turn into buildings until we reached central London. The car stopped in front of the building, and I jumped out quickly, not waiting for the driver to open the door.Maurice, who’d come with us to the apartment, looked startled as I burst through the door and headed to Cassian’s office—but he wasn’t there. I ran to the bedroom and checked the bathrooms; Cassian was nowhere. I returned to the living room, where the driver was reporting what happened to the butler.“I’m sorry you had to see Mrs. Moore’s worst side, Miss Reed,” Maurice said solemnly. I shook my head and raised my hands.“I’m fine. I expected her to receive me

Once again, we were all separated.Since the traitor hadn’t been uncovered yet, Cassian decided to split us up for safety. Chloe was sent to a property in Sophie’s name—so she wouldn’t be targeted, as everyone knew Cassian’s younger sister was kept out of the Boss’s affairs. Amy stayed at one of Jack’s properties at his request, and I was taken to a Moore family apartment in central London. As for Sophie, her mother had taken her a little earlier from the previous house.“I’ve already told you there’s no need to worry, little squirrel.” Cassian’s arms wrapped around me from behind; his warm body carried the faint scent of soap and shampoo. “It won’t be long until this whole mess is over.” He kissed my temple, trailing down to my neck.

I dropped the phone, my head pounding with everything that was happening. Cassian already had so much on his plate—then Sophie finds out the truth, and Margaret shows up. Everything felt off, not to mention Liam’s call and that weird message right after.“Secrets… What secrets could my parents have had? We were a middle-class family, barely scraping by. Dad had a normal job, Mom was a housewife.”The bedroom door opened, and Amy appeared. Her face was a little pale, but she tried to keep a smile. She sat beside me, and I forced myself to look calm.“How are you holding up?” she asked, placing her cold hand over mine. I smiled and took a deep breath.“I’m okay, but Sophie…” We fell silent for a moment.“Honestly, I don’t blame her for reacting like that. I don’t know how I’d handle finding out my family had lied to me that way.” I nodded. “She seems like a good person. I hope she’ll be okay.”“I hope so, too.”The message I’d just received echoed in my mind, along with Cassian and Jack

Cassian ran ahead, racing toward the living room, where a fresh wave of screams and sobs erupted. I was slower, but nothing could have prepared me for what I was about to see.In the center of the room stood Sophie, screaming at the top of her lungs, face red and soaked with tears, shoving Cassian away from her. Cassian’s face was ashen as he tried to get close and calm his sister. Harry was there too, but he couldn’t do much. On the other side, Jack stood, shielding Amy and Chloe like a wall.“You all lied to me! Every single one of you!” Sophie shrieked, gesturing wildly, pointing at everyone. When her eyes met mine, the weight of her guilt and despair crushed me. “How could I have been so naïve, so stupid?”“Sophie, my angel,
