LUCIEN

"Pick a side?" The sound of that does not sit well with me. She is not supposed to pick a side; she is supposed to be on mine no matter what. How do I tell her that even though Cassian was a teenager, he already endorsed all of the bad deeds his father and hers did? How do I tell her that Cassian knew every single atrocity her father committed against her, and all he did was hide it well?

He had watched both men destroy my family over money and then swept it all under the carpet, and yet no shame at all? He knew in detail all the evil things his parents did, yet he was okay with it, and now he was ready to indulge and do all of that too.

"Lucien, I am not a tool for you to use; you don't own me. If you want me to help, then you need to explain it to me in a way I can understand fully."

  • NIRELLE   PICK A SIDE

NIRELLE"What do you want?" The sound of my own crying voice startles me just a bit. I look back at Theo blankly. "You did not say he was here, too. Is he here to apologise?" I ask."If I had said he was, would you have opened up?" Theo asked, and I asked myself the question multiple times before shaking my head slowly. All of this was his fault and no one else's. If he had not been a jerk to me last night, then I would not have tried to provoke him and ended up in this mess."Is he here to apologise?" I asked, feeling my throat crack a bit as the words flowed."I don't know why he is here, but I am here to apologise." I can see Lucien's discomfort at his friend not taking the initiative for him."Then only you can come in." I step aside, and Theo steps in. I try to close the door, but it won't; his body is midway in the frame, and his hand is holding t

  • NIRELLE   HELD TOGETHER BY FURY

NIRELLE"You heard the woman," Cassian threw spitefully at Theo, who stood there visibly angry. Why was he angry? It made no sense. Of course, I knew that Lucien was not going to sit still for what I had done, but sending Theo here was part of the plan, at least in my head."I was not talking to you, and you know that," Theo replied in the same tone that Cassian had used."Oh, come on, man, this is just a friendly lunch between two friends. Why are you trying to ruin it?" Cassian's tone changed again. The men were confusing me, but I was not going to chime in again. I wanted to see how this would play out and who would win between Lucien and Cassian."A friendly lunch? With Mr. Vexley's wife?" Theo was asking, and Cassian was frowning now. He looked caught, as if he had been doing something no one should have seen. "I can see that you must already be losing your mind slowly.""Mr. Theo or whatever you are, I am just catching up with my friend I haven't seen in years, so if you could p

  • NIRELLE   TABLE FOR THREE?

NIRELLEI know I lied to Cassian about the sightseeing, but everything I was seeing was different from the last time I was allowed to wander the world alone. I just searched up fun places on my phone and tried to act normal and blend in, although it was too difficult for me with all the bodyguards. So when I saw people staring, I would know that it was because of the guards and not because they knew how I was and that I was trying to end my life.I get a call from Cassian; he tells me that it is finally time for lunch, and he has been anticipating it. I shrug off the eerie feeling that his statement creates in me, and then I ask the driver to take me for lunch. I could not have been happier at the time he called since I was starving.I walk into the restaurant that Cassian had asked us to meet at, and I can tell that he was trying to impress me with the interior of this place. I walk in and notice that even though it is rush hour, the restaurant is empty with a few guards at the door.

  • NIRELLE   THE WAR DRESS

NIRELLEI have to make Lucien know that I was serious about sitting out meals with him, so when I know he is down at the table for breakfast, I walk over with a tray I had literally wrestled for with the staff and pack up some things and put them on it. His eyes watch me silently, but I don't mind, as this is my way of making him know I won't sit back and do nothing while he tries to box me again.'This is supposed to be my salvation, my escape, and not another prison. I was not going to allow that at all.' Once I am satisfied with everything I have put on my tray, I walk out and stop by the door. Turning to him, I say, "Good morning, Mr. Vexley," as if this is the first time I am seeing him.I watch his eyes widen in shock and his jaws tighten, but I flash a forced smile at him and walk off. I stopped one of the staff and ensured that I spoke loudly so he could hear me."I am seeing a friend today, so please get the car ready for me," I say, hoping that Lucien next door had heard me.

  • NIRELLE   RULES OF REGRET

LUCIEN"Don't you think you are being too mean to her?"I scoff and turn to Theo, who pushes a fork into his mouth and begins to chew so loudly without turning his face away from me. He knows how passionate I am about etiquette, especially at the table. "You think this is my fault?""Whose fault is it then? Mine?" Theo asked with a head tilt. "I was not the one she called a jerk," he said and then pushed another forkful into his mouth, chewing loudly.I want to ignore him, but I know he would keep talking about it until dinner was over. "Wait, I believe the word she used is 'difficult jerk,'" he adds and then lets out a loud laugh. "You've been living together for only four days, and you've managed to show her how much of a jerk you are. Women are different, and that means you need to handle them differently.""I am not a jerk, and you know it," I respond, feeling my jaws square tightly."I don't know, Nirelle seems pretty solid at knowing when someone is being a jerk." I drop my cutl
