My anger had been fully expressed by puffing out my cheeks as I left Nancy’s apartment. I did my best to avoid screaming and cursing in my usual fashion; however, I did my best not to alert any neighbors. Finally, I had her back, but I lost her just as quickly. I didn't know what to think. My legs were as heavy as logs of wood. Failing like that was never my thing.
Getting in, I just sat in the driver's side quietly. I looked at Nancy's building with longing in my eyes. She had moved on, obviously, but I was too damn desperate. Maybe things had truly ended between us years ago. Maybe we were never truly meant to be. I pushed those stupid thoughts off quickly. No, I didn't give a damn about fate. I believed only in God and willpower. I got her once, and I could get her again. My car engine came to life, and a devilish grin animated my face "Watch out, clumsy, you're mine.” In no time, I sped off into thin air. ...... I was as late as Santa, who forgot Christmas, but I didn't care one bit. I marched into the office with my hands in my pockets. Eyes were glued on me as always, but I remained confident. I melted into my chair, avoiding the side talks I was sure were about me. Immediately, I turned on my computer, and an unknown email popped up on my screen like a time bomb, and I had a really bad feeling about it. ‘You can't fear what you don't know,’ I shrugged, deleting it and blocking the unknown sender. "Looks like someone's in a good mood today,” Steve interrupted, his black silky hair ruffled as usual and his collar unbuttoned as he lazily swirled in his chair. "Zip it, Steve. Shouldn't you be working?" I asked sarcastically. "Relax, Ric, I'm just teasing you," Steve grinned. Suddenly, he whistled towards me. "Look who's here, Ric.” I took his signals, trying to figure out the message he was passing. Holy moly! It was her again. I was really shocked when my eyes clashed with Nancy's, who was headed to the boss's office. "Shit, she never listens, does she?" My lips curled up in annoyance. Why didn't she heed my warnings? I knew she was never going to listen to me, and she didn't fail to prove me wrong. After an eternity, she finally walked out of the office with a pale look, making me wonder what went down. I followed her till we reached the staircase. I was so silent, and I could tell that she hadn't even noticed me. Not until she missed a step, which almost sent her to the medics. Quickly reacting, I wrapped my hands around her waist, tightly. "Whoa there, clumsy." A knowing smile played on my face as if I knew she was going to have a fall. Anyways, she pushed me away immediately, annoyance written all over her face. "Come Nancy, don't be like that, you were all over me last night." I grinned, causing her to flush. "I don't have the time for this," she huffed, turning to leave. "Seriously? What better thing do you have to do today?" I asked, I already knew her schedule at the back of my mind but I couldn't give myself out too much, lest she saw me as a freak. "I-I have better things to do, like... like cooking. Yes, I was going to try some recipes today." She stammered as she lied, her eyes red. She was always a terrible liar. "Last I remembered, you hated cooking and I wouldn't blame you cause you were awful at it," I said, exposing her. She flared as she turned crimson, her cheeks puffed, letting her down. And for some time, we just stood there in silence as if we had been remotely paused. "How are your legs by the way?" I broke the silence. "That is so not your business!" She retorted, vibrating like a faulty speaker. I took a step forward and held her chin up to make her look at me. "Last I remembered, I was the cause of it, and so it is actually my business." Soon enough, I could hear footsteps behind me. We had company. Nancy pulled away as I turned towards Steve, who had a phone to his ear. Setting his eyes on us, he let out a wide smile as if something sinister was happening. What was he thinking? When I turned back to Nancy, it was her back view that greeted me instead. Did she really run away? I headed back inside, shaking my head in disappointment. ..... "You've been staring at her desk for an hour straight,” Steve's voice snapped me back to reality. I gazed at him and the bag in his hand, my eyes demanding answers. "My girlfriend ordered takeout." "Which of them?" I asked sarcastically, making him pause with narrow eyes. "The prettiest one," he retorted, clicking his tongue. "Why do you enjoy playing with fire? I really think you should settle down with someone, Steve. You're almost in your thirties and still unmarried. People might think you're incapable,” I teased. "Ugh… You sound like my mom, man. And besides, I could say the same about you. As far as I've known you, you've never even looked at a woman except Nancy,” he said, trying to make me spill any juicy secrets. He was my best friend, but he was also a very annoying busybody. "I spent the night with her,” I said in a very low tone that I could hardly hear myself. But trust Steve! He was really sharp. He almost choked on the piece of junk in his mouth. I patted his back as he stared at me with his wide eyes. "You and Clumsy Nancy???" He said, in a loud voice that got people looking in our direction. "Damn! What the hell, bro?" I exclaimed, giving him an accusatory stare.NANCY'S POV I woke up feeling unnecessarily lazy. I had expected to find Alaric by my side but he wasn't there, although the bed still reeked of his warmth making me smile stupidly. There was a note on the dresser saying,"Went out for a jog, breakfast is in the kitchen." At the thought of breakfast, my stomach made a really loud noise as if it had problems. I was thankful that he really wasn't here. I said a short prayer, hoping that nothing bad like last time would happen. Everything felt perfect, until my mind drifted towards what Alaric had said last night."Go to a party with me."How was I supposed to refuse him? He looked really expectant and it made me feel guilty. But, if you think I'm a clutz then you haven't seen me at parties. It feels like my bad luck increases by a 100%. One time, when the company's boss threw a birthday party for himself; first of all, I showed up dressed like a dinosaur, thinking it was a costume party and my tail bummed into the cake. Ric never let me
ALARIC'S POV I turned and tossed on the large bed, opening and closing the window every now and then but I couldn't fall asleep. I just wanted to hold Nancy in my arms.My grandmother had called me with an unknown number earlier and told me that she had arrived in the continent."Did you block me?? I've been trying to reach you for months, Alaric. You had me worried sick," she complained from over the phone. "No, I didn't, Granny, I didn't get your call," I lied. Long story short, she was on her way here to make my life simply miserable. I groaned at the thought of that.My grandmother wasn't a bad person, at least not anymore. Former mistress of Reginald Wealth who rose to the position of his wife after she sent his original wife practically running. She was nicknamed the Asian tiger in her day because of her shrewdness in the financial industry and her cunningness as well. She raised all her children to be disciplined and as cunning as her but unfortunately most of them died due
NANCY'S POV I found out that the Asian man didn't have Alaric 's contact or even his address. But I learned that his name was Eren, which should be a victory but it wasn't. He was really nice and since I had nothing better to do, I followed him everywhere he went. I even went to chat with the receptionist but she was colder than an iceberg. The building contained multiple high end apartments that looked like mansions on one floor, few people came by and went barely sparing me a glance.I got bored of Eren as he attended to the residents and decided to head back to the penthouse. I thought about going home or to the library, but aside the fact that I was obviously too lazy, I was a bit wary since Ric told me about Michael breaking into my apartment. I chatted Raya, while I took a sip in the Indoor Jacuzzi and after that, I just stood by the glass wall, staring at the clouds that were decorated in all streaks of pink and orange. It was beautiful, truly but I felt empty inside as I reco
I took off after I had dropped Nancy off at the penthouse I'd rented a day before. I was really angry, and I had to find myself a bar to cool off. It was already too late so I couldn't call Steve. Halfway drowned in alcohol, I heard a strange voice behind me. "Long time no see, Alaric." I only turned my head slightly, gazing at a man with short black hair and black eyes. He appeared with a woman who was dressed like a stripper. She looked lustfully at me like she had other plans for me, but I didn't pay her any mind."Do I know you?" I asked as I was not in the mood for any nonsense. I was already pissed off, but I kept my cool nevertheless."Don't you dare do that!" The man commanded. "Don't you dare pretend like you don't remember me. I know you remember every single detail." I raised an eyebrow at him, not even understanding the angle he was coming from. He gave the bartender quick signs, and he quickly arrived with a bottle of wine."You thought you could ruin my life, ey Ric?"
(NANCY'S POV)I felt sour as I looked towards Alaric. I thought about apologizing, but I felt like it wasn't the right time. He surely hated me at that point. He had helped me with Michael, and I hadn't even given him so much as a thank you. After what felt like an eternity, he pulled up in front of a really fancy building, allowing me to look around. I hadn't even noticed when we had entered the neighborhood. It was so quiet and had few people walking around, unlike my usually busy neighborhood. I looked towards Alaric questioningly, but his face was expressionless. I immediately took it as my cue to get out."There's a penthouse on the top floor, and all you'll need will be there. If there's anything you can call the receptionist," he instructed as I alighted. He sped off as soon as my feet touched the floor. I stumbled back a few steps due to the dust, blinking in surprise. Yeah, I guess I dug that pit myself. A tall Asian looking man was standing by the door."You must be Miss
Days passed by, and the office was boring as usual. To add to it, there had been no sign of Nancy since then. On a fateful day, after I had parted ways with Steve, I felt particularly good, my hands on the steering wheel and the song Reckless Love by Cory Asbury playing on the radio. I wasn't particularly fond of this kind of music, but it seemed like Clumsy was obsessed with it, so I decided to give it a try, and it wasn't so bad. I stopped at the traffic lights when I received a call from a friend, "What's up, Roy?" I said casually, as I leaned against the leather seat, watching the traffic meter count down slowly. "Been a while. I'm in New York for now, and I have plans to throw a birthday party for my girl. I will see you there, right?" The deep voice said from the other end. "I'd love to, but you know I don't really immerse myself in all these social gatherings, Roy," I said, watching the meter count from ten impatiently. "Oh, come on. Think of it as a great way to start
