Marielle was halfway through clearing the breakfast table when Grayson walked into the kitchen with his phone in one hand and the expression he usually wore right before telling someone something they wouldn't like. She noticed the look before she noticed him.

What, she said.

He stopped beside the island. Good morning to you too.

It is morning, she said. You look suspicious.

I look tired.

You looked tired yesterday.

I have a lot of responsibilities.

You also have a very expensive bed.

His mouth

Theo decided Marielle could not be allowed near the water without proper supervision. He made this announcement over breakfast while she was halfway through her toast, and before she could ask what he meant, he had already turned to Grayson with the seriousness of a man arranging a military operation. “She needs lessons.” Grayson looked at Marielle. “Apparently you need lessons.” “I can swim.” Theo shook his head. “You can float.” Marielle put her toast down. “I beg your pardon?” “Yesterday you held onto the side the whole time.” “I was being careful.” “You were scared.” “I was not scared.” Grayson took another sip of coffee and tried very hard not to smile. “This is going well.” She pointed at him. “Don't start.” Theo climbed down from his chair. “Dad can teach you.” “Why does Dad have to teach me?” “Because he's good at swimming.” Grayson looked at his son. “You planned this.” Theo grinned. “A little.” By the time they reached the pool, Marielle had already decided that agreeing ha

Chapter 60: BonfireBy the time the sun started going down, Theo had decided that the beach needed a fire. He had apparently seen one in a movie and had spent the better part of an hour explaining to Grayson why a proper family holiday could not possibly be complete without one. Grayson had listened while Theo made his case, then looked at Marielle as if he expected her to settle the matter. She had shrugged. “He's got a point.” “You too?” Grayson asked. “I didn't say I wanted one.” “You didn't have to.” Theo was already running toward the staff member who had been setting up the fire pit. “Dad said yes.” Grayson sighed. “I really didn't.”They carried blankets down to the beach once the fire was burning properly, and Theo brought three sticks because he had decided they were going to roast marshmallows. Marielle had no idea what she was doing, but she refused to admit it. She had seen people cook over fires before. It couldn't be that difficult. She placed a small pan over the flames

Theo was awake before either of them that morning, which meant Marielle knew something was wrong before she even opened her eyes. He came running into their room with his hair sticking up on one side and announced that Dad had promised to take the boat out. Grayson, who had been half asleep beside the window, opened one eye and asked why Theo was yelling at seven in the morning. “Because we're going on the boat.” Theo climbed onto the end of the bed. “You said today.” Grayson rubbed his face. “I did.” “So we're going now.” “We haven't had breakfast.” Theo considered that for a second. “We can eat on the boat.” Marielle pulled the pillow over her face. “You created this problem yourself.” Grayson looked at her. “I know.”By the time they reached the dock, Theo had asked whether the boat could go faster than a car, whether fish could hear the engine, whether sharks followed boats because they were curious, whether dolphins liked children, and whether his father had ever driven a boat in

Marielle had expected the island to be beautiful. Grayson had mentioned white sand, clear water and a house large enough to accommodate all three of them, so she had already pictured something expensive and slightly ridiculous. What she had not expected was how quiet it would be. There were no cars passing on a road somewhere beyond the trees. No staff members waiting around unless they were needed. No strangers wandering past with phones held up. Most of all, there were no cameras. She stood near the edge of the beach for a moment, sunglasses pushed onto her head, and looked back at the house. Nobody was watching them. Nobody knew where they were. She could not remember the last time she had been somewhere without checking over her shoulder first.Theo did not care about any of that. He had been on the beach for less than two minutes when he announced that it was his. “This part is mine,” he said, pointing at a patch of sand as though he had paid for it himself. Marielle laughed and

By six in the morning, Theo had already asked twelve questions, lost one sock, found the sock inside his pillowcase, and announced that he was taking three books, two dinosaurs, his binoculars, a football, and a wooden sword to the island. Marielle stood at the foot of his bed with her arms folded, watching him shove things into a small blue suitcase that was clearly too full to close. She had tried telling him the island probably had things for children to do. Theo had looked at her as though she had missed the entire point. “But those things aren't mine.” He had said it so seriously that she had given up. Ten minutes later, the suitcase was sitting open on the hallway floor while Theo wrestled with the zip and Grayson walked past carrying his own bag and a smaller one for Theo. He stopped, looked at the suitcase, then looked at his son. “How many dinosaurs are you taking?” “Three.” “Why three?” Theo frowned at him. “Because they have to have friends.” Grayson nodded as though this

The first crack of thunder came just after sunset, loud enough to rattle the windows of the main house, and Theo nearly dropped the cards he was holding. “What was that?” he asked, his eyes widening as another low rumble rolled across the island. “That,” Grayson said, looking up from his phone, “is thunder.” Theo frowned at him. “I know what thunder is.” “Then why did you ask?” “Because yours sounded different.” Marielle bit the inside of her cheek to stop herself from laughing. Theo was trying very hard to look brave, but every time the wind slammed against the windows, his little shoulders jumped. The storm had arrived faster than any of them expected. An hour earlier, the sky had only been grey. Now the palm trees outside were bending under the force of the wind, rain striking the glass so hard that it sounded like someone was throwing handfuls of pebbles at the house. One of the island staff members h
