Chapter 8

Author: Jojo
One day, Nathaniel finally came home. He frowned when he saw several suitcases in the living room.

Rosalie was sorting through her books when he came up behind her and wrapped his arms around her.

"Why are you packing all this up?" he asked, a trace of tension in his voice.

Rosalie stiffened but didn't answer or turn around. She simply went on sorting through her books.

Nathaniel turned her around to face him.

"Still mad? Look, Evelyn was wrong to lock you in the morgue, but you kicked her into that freezing lake. She was sick for days afterward. Can't we just put this behind us?

"Besides, it's your birthday. I've planned a party for you at the officers' club. You've always loved parties, haven't you? Come on. Let's go."

Rosalie hadn't had a proper birthday celebration since Jacqueline died.

For a while, Nathaniel had made her feel like someone genuinely cared about her again. But now, even the trouble he'd gone to for her birthday only left her feeling tired and irritated.

She lowered her eyes, her voice flat. "I don't want to go."

"What's got you so upset this time?" Nathaniel asked, still trying to change her mind.

"I even invited a bunch of your friends. They're already there. Come on. Don't keep everyone waiting."

He kept pressing until he finally pulled her along anyway.

The party was lavish. Flowers decorated the room, music filled the air, and tables were laden with food. Gifts were piled high.

Nathaniel had even used his connections to book one of her favorite bands to perform.

But Evelyn was there, too.

She sat in a corner wearing a plain, modest dress, looking as fragile as ever. Every so often, she gave Rosalie a subtly challenging look.

Rosalie ignored her.

A few of her closest friends gathered around, speaking in low, indignant voices.

"Rosie, isn't that Evelyn Cohen? The one Nathaniel's in love with? Seriously, what does he see in her? She's got nothing on you."

"Exactly! Nathaniel must be blind. He's married to you, and he's still hung up on her?"

Rosalie said nothing.

She had so much going for her, but none of it mattered. Nathaniel loved someone else.

Before long, it was time for Rosalie to make a wish and cut the cake. An enormous three-tiered birthday cake was wheeled out, topped with beautifully decorated candles.

As the guests cheered her on, Rosalie closed her eyes and made a wish, though her heart wasn't in it. She'd barely opened her eyes when a loud crash came from nearby, followed by startled cries.

Someone had knocked over the champagne tower.

Rosalie turned toward the commotion and saw Evelyn on the floor, surrounded by several of Rosalie's friends, who looked furious.

Rosalie frowned and started toward them, but Nathaniel reached Evelyn first. He helped her to her feet, then stepped in front of her protectively.

"What happened?" he demanded.

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

"They... they accused me of stealing the birthday present they'd given Rosalie. They wanted to search my bag. I said no, but they searched it anyway. And somehow, the gift was in there.

"But I swear I didn't take it! I have no idea how it got there! Then they started calling me names and pushing me around. That's how the champagne tower got knocked over."

"You're lying!" one of Rosalie's friends snapped, her face red with anger.

"We saw you slip it into your bag! We didn't confront you until it fell out. And we'd barely said a word when you threw yourself into the champagne tower! You planned the whole thing!"

Nathaniel cut her off with a sharp glare. "That's enough! Apologize to Evelyn."

Rosalie's friends stared at him in disbelief.

"Are you kidding me? She's the one who stole the gift, and you want us to apologize?"

"I believe Evelyn!" Nathaniel said firmly.

Rosalie's temper flared. She rushed to her friends' defense, putting herself between them and Nathaniel as she met his gaze head-on.

"Well, I believe my friends! They wouldn't accuse someone of stealing without good reason. And they're not apologizing!"

Nathaniel's expression darkened when Rosalie stood up for her friends. He stared at her for a long moment before speaking coldly.

"Evelyn owns jewelry worth far more than that gift. Why would she bother stealing it?"

His words stung.

Nathaniel clearly knew how much Evelyn's jewelry was worth. Rosalie couldn't help wondering how many expensive gifts he'd given her when they were together. Just how close had they been?

No wonder he believed Evelyn without question.

Then Rosalie caught the smug look in Evelyn's eyes, and something clicked.

Maybe keeping the gift had never been Evelyn's real aim. Maybe she'd staged the whole thing just to force Nathaniel to choose sides, knowing he'd take hers over Rosalie's and her friends'.

"Apologize," Nathaniel repeated, his patience wearing thin.

"Not a chance," Rosalie shot back.

That was the last straw. Nathaniel turned to one of his guards and barked an order without even looking at Rosalie.

"Take them away! They caused a disturbance and falsely accused Evelyn of stealing. Give them twenty strokes each with a cane! Then notify their families. If they can't teach their daughters how to behave, I will!"

Rosalie couldn't believe what she'd heard. "Nathaniel, don't you dare!"

But Nathaniel ignored her. He scooped Evelyn into his arms and carried her away. Rosalie shouted after him, but he never once looked back.

The phone rang for a long time before Rosalie finally answered. Her voice was calm, almost languid."Hello?"Nathaniel's throat tightened. He had so much he wanted to say, but the words wouldn't come. When he finally found his voice, it was hoarse and pleading, trembling on the verge of tears."Rosie... it's me. I saw the article. You're doing well. That's... that's all that matters. I… I just wanted to hear your voice."Silence stretched between them, so long that Nathaniel began to think she might hang up without another word.At last, Rosalie let out a quiet sigh. When she spoke, her voice was calm, almost serene. She sounded at peace, yet farther away from him than ever."Nathaniel, it's all in the past. I forgive you not for your sake, but for mine. I needed to let go so I could move on with my life. Please, let yourself move on, too. And don't ever come looking for me again."Before Nathaniel could say another word, the line went dead.He stood rooted to the spot, the rec

Back at the house, with Rosalie gone for good, Nathaniel locked himself in his room. He drew the curtains tight, shutting out the daylight and the rest of the world.Empty liquor bottles littered the floor. The room reeked of alcohol, and the air seemed heavy with despair. He sat on the floor, his back against the bed, clutching a yellowing photograph someone had secretly taken of Rosalie years ago at the Rose Garden in Nelmora.Beside him, a small recorder played a muffled recording on a loop. Whenever the tape ended, he rewound it and played it again. It was Rosalie humming to herself at home on a day when she'd been in good spirits. Her voice had a bright, slightly languid lilt, even through the muffled recording. Now it was a form of torture, each replay slicing through him anew.At times, a low, almost manic laugh escaped him. At others, he buried his face in his knees and broke into helpless, muffled sobs.Whenever the guards brought him food, he knocked it to the floor i

After dealing with an urgent military matter, Nathaniel raced home. All the way back, he clung to a sliver of hope he knew was foolish.Maybe, with time, the baby would make Rosalie reconsider.Maybe they still had a chance. But when he opened the front door, the house was eerily silent. Somehow, it felt even emptier than it had the first time she'd left.Once again, all her personal belongings were gone. On the living room coffee table sat a velvet box and a folded sheet of paper.A sudden sense of dread came over Nathaniel. His hands trembled as he picked up the paper and unfolded it.It was a medical record from a private clinic, confirming that Rosalie had undergone an abortion that very day. The reason was stated in cold, clinical language."Termination of pregnancy at patient's insistence."Nathaniel's vision went dark. His mind went blank, his ears rang, and his knees nearly buckled. He snapped open the velvet box. Inside lay the ring Rosalie had worn on their wedding d

As the shock and disbelief began to fade, a faint, desperate hope stirred in Nathaniel despite himself. He hardly dared let himself believe it.The baby would tie him to Rosalie in a way nothing else could.Maybe she'd think twice about leaving.Maybe he still had a chance to win her back.He looked at Rosalie, searching her face for some sign of hesitation. Instead, he found only cold disgust and unwavering resolve. Whatever hope he'd felt vanished. When Rosalie finally spoke, her voice was utterly devoid of emotion. Every word rang through the living room with chilling clarity."I'm getting an abortion. I'm not having this baby."Nathaniel's chest tightened so painfully he could barely breathe. He rushed over, crouched in front of Rosalie, and reached for her hand. His voice trembled as he pleaded with her more desperately than ever."Rosie, please, don't! This is our baby. It's all my fault. Hate me. Punish me however you want, but the baby's innocent. Nathaniel could see the resolve in Rosalie's eyes. She'd made up her mind to leave him, and something inside him finally snapped.Panic and despair overwhelmed him.He seized Rosalie's wrist and dragged her up to the rooftop, ignoring her struggles and furious protests. The last of the sunlight stained the sky a deep, bloodred hue.He pulled her toward the edge of the roof. Beyond the flimsy railing, the ground lay several stories below. His grip tightened around her arm. His bloodshot eyes were wild, and his voice shook with pain and desperation. He sounded as though he were threatening her and begging her at the same time."Rosie! If you leave me... if you really walk away..."He pointed to the ground far below."I'll jump! If seeing me dead would make you happy, if it'd make you feel even a little better, I'll jump right now! You think I won't?"Rosalie was trapped against the railing, her upper body leaning dangerously over the edge. The wind whipped her long hair around h

Nathaniel's expression darkened, his eyes turning frighteningly cold.He barely spared Evelyn a glance before turning to the guards behind him. "Get her out of here! And don't let her back into this house without my permission!"The guards stepped forward immediately. They politely but firmly took the scissors from Evelyn and began escorting her out.Evelyn stared at him in disbelief, and she cried out, "Nathaniel! How could you do this to me? Have you forgotten how things used to be—""Evelyn," Nathaniel cut her off, his voice devoid of warmth. He fixed her with a piercing stare. "For old times' sake, I'll make sure you get the drug you need until you've fully recovered. But that's all you'll ever get from me."He paused, his next words carrying an unmistakable warning."If you bother Rosie again or push me any further, our past won't protect you. You'll be on your own with your treatment."Whatever hope Evelyn had left vanished. She stared at Nathaniel, realizing just how fa
