Chapter 7

Author: Jojo
Evelyn said, "Nathaniel, I'm sorry. I don't know why Rosalie went down to the morgue and locked herself in. I was only joking when I told her I'd left her things there.

"I never thought she'd actually go looking for them. Now the police think I'm the one who locked her in! What am I supposed to do?"

Nathaniel was silent for a moment. When he finally spoke, his voice was low.

"As Rosalie's husband, I've already signed a statement asking the police to go easy on you. Don't worry. You'll be fine."

Rosalie lay on the cold bed, hearing every word through the door. The betrayal was almost more than she could bear.

Evelyn had nearly gotten her killed in that morgue, and Nathaniel had actually asked the police to go easy on her?

Just like that?

Furious, Rosalie grabbed a glass medicine bottle nearby and hurled it at the door with all her strength.

Moments later, the door swung open. Nathaniel walked in with Evelyn. He frowned when he saw how pale and disheveled Rosalie looked.

Rosalie struggled to sit up and glared at him. "She locked me in the morgue! I could've frozen to death in there, and you actually asked the police to go easy on her?"

Something flickered across Nathaniel's face, but he still defended Evelyn.

"Rosie, Evelyn was just being childish. She thought it would be a funny prank. She didn't think you'd actually take it seriously."

Rosalie scoffed. "A prank? Nathaniel, you know me. I'm not letting her get away with this!"

Nathaniel could see she was furious, and this time, she wasn't backing down.

He rubbed his forehead. "So what do you want?"

Rosalie ignored him and turned to his guard. "Get me a set of weighted gear. 40 pounds total!"

The guard hesitated, glancing at Nathaniel.

Nathaniel nodded.

A short while later, the guard returned with a weighted vest and some sandbags.

Rosalie led them downstairs, pointed to the weights, and turned to Evelyn.

"Put all that on and run five miles around the military hospital's training field. Finish the run, and I'll let this whole thing go."

"What?"

Evelyn stared at her in disbelief, then turned to Nathaniel for help. "Nathaniel, I-I can't! My doctor told me to avoid strenuous exercise!"

Nathaniel immediately turned to Rosalie. "Rosie, don't be ridiculous! You know how frail Evelyn is. That could kill her!"

"And did she stop to think she might kill me when she locked me in the morgue?"

Evelyn stared at the sandbags, her face pale and her eyes filling with tears.

Nathaniel took a deep breath, shrugged off his uniform jacket, and began putting on the weights.

"Fine. If you're going to insist on this, I'll do it for her."

"Nathaniel, no! Your wound hasn't even healed!" Evelyn cried.

"I'll be fine," Nathaniel said, as though it were nothing.

Rosalie stared at him in disbelief. He was still injured, yet he was willing to put himself through this for Evelyn. Seeing how far he'd go for her was almost unbearable.

He really did love her that much.

Once he'd secured the weights, Nathaniel looked at Rosalie. He looked exhausted, but there was a warning in his eyes.

"I'll run for her. Once I'm done, you're going to leave her alone."

Rosalie said nothing. She just stared back at him coldly.

Nathaniel turned and headed for the field.

The moment his back was turned, Rosalie lunged at Evelyn, grabbed her, and yanked her forward. Then she kicked Evelyn with all her strength, sending her crashing through the thin ice covering the artificial lake behind the hospital.

Evelyn never saw it coming. She screamed as she plunged into the freezing water.

Nathaniel spun around at Evelyn's scream. The sight of her in the lake stopped him cold. Then he turned to Rosalie, unable to believe what she'd done.

"Rosalie! What the hell have you done?"

Rosalie stood at the water's edge, meeting his gaze without flinching. "She had no problem leaving me to freeze in the morgue. I figured I'd return the favor. What's wrong with that?"

Fury flashed in Nathaniel's eyes, but he didn't stop to confront Rosalie. He dove straight into the freezing lake, his elbow striking her hard as he passed.

Rosalie stumbled backward, lost her balance, and struck the back of her head against a decorative rock with a sickening thud.

Agonizing pain shot through her head. Blood streamed from the wound, staining the cold stone beneath her.

Her vision blurred, but she could still make out Nathaniel swimming frantically toward Evelyn. He pulled her into his arms, calling her name in a panic.

He never even noticed Rosalie on the shore, bleeding from her head.

Rosalie gritted her teeth and pressed a hand to the wound. Despite the pain and dizziness, she forced herself to walk away.

At the emergency room, the gash in her head required seven stitches.

As a nurse bandaged her wound, she asked with concern, "How did you get hurt so badly? Where's General Farrell?"

Rosalie kept her eyes closed and said nothing.

During her stay, she overheard nurses whispering about Nathaniel.

Evelyn had developed a fever after falling into the lake, and Nathaniel had barely left her side since. The nurses talked about how gentle and attentive he'd been, caring for her day and night.

Rosalie heard every word, but she felt nothing anymore. She was too drained even to cry.

She checked herself out of the hospital before her stitches had even been removed.

Over the next few days, she stayed home, packing her belongings a little at a time. She was preparing to leave for good.

The phone rang for a long time before Rosalie finally answered. Her voice was calm, almost languid."Hello?"Nathaniel's throat tightened. He had so much he wanted to say, but the words wouldn't come. When he finally found his voice, it was hoarse and pleading, trembling on the verge of tears."Rosie... it's me. I saw the article. You're doing well. That's... that's all that matters. I… I just wanted to hear your voice."Silence stretched between them, so long that Nathaniel began to think she might hang up without another word.At last, Rosalie let out a quiet sigh. When she spoke, her voice was calm, almost serene. She sounded at peace, yet farther away from him than ever."Nathaniel, it's all in the past. I forgive you not for your sake, but for mine. I needed to let go so I could move on with my life. Please, let yourself move on, too. And don't ever come looking for me again."Before Nathaniel could say another word, the line went dead.He stood rooted to the spot, the rec

  • Never His to Keep   Chapter 30

Back at the house, with Rosalie gone for good, Nathaniel locked himself in his room. He drew the curtains tight, shutting out the daylight and the rest of the world.Empty liquor bottles littered the floor. The room reeked of alcohol, and the air seemed heavy with despair. He sat on the floor, his back against the bed, clutching a yellowing photograph someone had secretly taken of Rosalie years ago at the Rose Garden in Nelmora.Beside him, a small recorder played a muffled recording on a loop. Whenever the tape ended, he rewound it and played it again. It was Rosalie humming to herself at home on a day when she'd been in good spirits. Her voice had a bright, slightly languid lilt, even through the muffled recording. Now it was a form of torture, each replay slicing through him anew.At times, a low, almost manic laugh escaped him. At others, he buried his face in his knees and broke into helpless, muffled sobs.Whenever the guards brought him food, he knocked it to the floor i

After dealing with an urgent military matter, Nathaniel raced home. All the way back, he clung to a sliver of hope he knew was foolish.Maybe, with time, the baby would make Rosalie reconsider.Maybe they still had a chance. But when he opened the front door, the house was eerily silent. Somehow, it felt even emptier than it had the first time she'd left.Once again, all her personal belongings were gone. On the living room coffee table sat a velvet box and a folded sheet of paper.A sudden sense of dread came over Nathaniel. His hands trembled as he picked up the paper and unfolded it.It was a medical record from a private clinic, confirming that Rosalie had undergone an abortion that very day. The reason was stated in cold, clinical language."Termination of pregnancy at patient's insistence."Nathaniel's vision went dark. His mind went blank, his ears rang, and his knees nearly buckled. He snapped open the velvet box. Inside lay the ring Rosalie had worn on their wedding d

As the shock and disbelief began to fade, a faint, desperate hope stirred in Nathaniel despite himself. He hardly dared let himself believe it.The baby would tie him to Rosalie in a way nothing else could.Maybe she'd think twice about leaving.Maybe he still had a chance to win her back.He looked at Rosalie, searching her face for some sign of hesitation. Instead, he found only cold disgust and unwavering resolve. Whatever hope he'd felt vanished. When Rosalie finally spoke, her voice was utterly devoid of emotion. Every word rang through the living room with chilling clarity."I'm getting an abortion. I'm not having this baby."Nathaniel's chest tightened so painfully he could barely breathe. He rushed over, crouched in front of Rosalie, and reached for her hand. His voice trembled as he pleaded with her more desperately than ever."Rosie, please, don't! This is our baby. It's all my fault. Hate me. Punish me however you want, but the baby's innocent. Please, keep the baby

Nathaniel could see the resolve in Rosalie's eyes. She'd made up her mind to leave him, and something inside him finally snapped.Panic and despair overwhelmed him.He seized Rosalie's wrist and dragged her up to the rooftop, ignoring her struggles and furious protests. The last of the sunlight stained the sky a deep, bloodred hue.He pulled her toward the edge of the roof. Beyond the flimsy railing, the ground lay several stories below. His grip tightened around her arm. His bloodshot eyes were wild, and his voice shook with pain and desperation. He sounded as though he were threatening her and begging her at the same time."Rosie! If you leave me... if you really walk away..."He pointed to the ground far below."I'll jump! If seeing me dead would make you happy, if it'd make you feel even a little better, I'll jump right now! You think I won't?"Rosalie was trapped against the railing, her upper body leaning dangerously over the edge. The wind whipped her long hair around h

Nathaniel's expression darkened, his eyes turning frighteningly cold.He barely spared Evelyn a glance before turning to the guards behind him. "Get her out of here! And don't let her back into this house without my permission!"The guards stepped forward immediately. They politely but firmly took the scissors from Evelyn and began escorting her out.Evelyn stared at him in disbelief, and she cried out, "Nathaniel! How could you do this to me? Have you forgotten how things used to be—""Evelyn," Nathaniel cut her off, his voice devoid of warmth. He fixed her with a piercing stare. "For old times' sake, I'll make sure you get the drug you need until you've fully recovered. But that's all you'll ever get from me."He paused, his next words carrying an unmistakable warning."If you bother Rosie again or push me any further, our past won't protect you. You'll be on your own with your treatment."Whatever hope Evelyn had left vanished. She stared at Nathaniel, realizing just how fa
