Chapter 2

Author: Scarlett Flame
The video showed Nathan sitting right next to Claire.

There were plenty of empty seats around her, but whenever someone tried to sit beside her, Nathan made them move.

When they talked, his lips brushed close to her ear. I couldn't hear what he whispered, but I could see Claire laughing softly and leaning away.

Even through the screen, the flirty tension was obvious.

My chest tightened. It looked like Nathan was just about to win her over.

Later, during a game, Claire got a dare to do partner push-ups with a guy. She hadn't even chosen her partner yet when Nathan jumped up first.

Everyone started cheering.

Claire's cheeks turned red as she lay back on the couch. Nathan held himself above her and did a few push-ups before pretending to slip, letting his whole body fall against hers.

The crowd screamed louder.

In the middle of all the noise, Nathan dipped his head and kissed Claire.

She didn't stop him.

The two of them kissed as if there were no one else in the room.

I froze while staring at the screen, barely able to breathe. My heart tore apart inside me.

If Nathan had feelings for Claire, he could've told me straight, and I wouldn't have kept humiliating myself, chasing after him.

But he never said a word. He let me believe he loved me. He tricked me into giving him my first time, then turned around and went after the girl he actually wanted.

He treated me like dirt while treating her as if she were some priceless treasure.

"Mavis, are you seeing this? Nathan's such a jerk!" Phoebe's voice rang out.

"You've chased him for years, and all this time, he just enjoyed everything you gave him, acting like he didn't know how you felt. He's been stringing you along while flirting with another girl!"

She was right. I'd been stupid for way too long. But that would end now.

Phoebe continued, "You should think hard about where you're applying to college. With your results in the AI lab, Westwood Tech would kill to have you. Why follow Nathan all the way to Redwood Business School to study business management? Giving up your dream for a man isn't worth it, especially not Nathan."

Her voice burned with anger. She sounded as if she were ready to storm in and punch Nathan herself.

I replied quietly, "I've made up my mind. I'm going to Westwood Tech with you."

If I went to Redwood Business School, I'd be stuck on the West Coast, breathing the same air as him and the girl of his dreams.

But if I went to Westwood Tech, I could start over in Christon, where it snowed in winter, and where nobody knew how I had wasted six years of my life.

This time, I'd use the whole width of Barlandy to cut him out of my story.

"I'm so happy to hear that! Let's get as far away as possible from that scumbag," Phoebe shouted, her excitement spilling through the phone.

She'd wanted us to go to the same college for years. But Nathan and I had made that stupid promise to attend Redwood together.

Now? I couldn't think of one good reason to keep it. Just imagining running into him again made me sick.

I wanted to avoid him at all costs.

So, I decided to go on a trip with Phoebe first. We'd leave in a week.

In a week, I'd leave Nathan behind.

It was a guy I had met through one of my campus clubs, a classmate from Barlandy named Elbert Cross. He was very good-looking—in certain angles, he even reminded me of a young Tom Cruise. But more than his looks, it was his personality that drew me in. He was cheerful and funny, always making me laugh until my stomach hurt. When I didn't immediately deny having someone in mind, my mother's eyes lit up, full of curiosity.I bit my lip and smiled, embarrassed. "Yeah, but we're not exactly dating yet."Hearing that, my bubbly mother didn't act awkward at all. She leaned in and kept asking about him, wanting to know everything.Nathan, sitting off to the side, suddenly went quiet. After a long pause, he finally spoke up. "Guys with a sweet tongue aren't always reliable. It's better to be with someone you really know."I nodded politely. "You're right. Sometimes you only see the surface of a person. I'll take my time and get to know him better."Then I added, "Thanks for the reminde

After that night, I didn't see Nathan again—not until it was time to leave for school.Phoebe sent me a screenshot of his post announcing his new relationship. I glanced at it once, then deleted it. From now on, there was no reason to keep up with him anymore. But of course, life had to play tricks on me. On the day I flew out, I ran straight into Nathan at the airport. And he wasn't alone—Claire was right there with him.He only said hi to Andrew, then stormed past me, as if I didn't even exist. He didn't look at me once.Andrew frowned, his voice low and annoyed. "What a joke. Who does he think he is, treating you like that? The project I gave him was finalized anyway. I won't help him out again."Before boarding, I felt something and turned my head to find Nathan watching me. The moment our eyes met, his gaze turned cold, then he disappeared into the gate without a word. And just like that, the boy I grew up with was officially gone from my life. After that, I didn't hear muc

This party was a complete nightmare for me.Nathan's mother, though, couldn't stop smiling when she saw me. She held onto my hand, as if I was family."College is starting soon. I told Nathan to take care of you there. If he ever dares to pick on you, just tell me. I'll make sure he gets what's coming!"She turned to Andrew as well. "Thank you for guiding Nathan in business. Without you, he'd still just be an ordinary student."Andrew looked a little awkward but kept the polite small talk going.Meanwhile, Claire stood off to the side, her smile stiff and her eyes dark. Then, out of nowhere, she jumped in. "Mrs. Gildon, don't worry. I'm going to a college in Redwood, too. I'll take good care of Nathan."Oh, did you know? Mavis didn't even apply to Redwood Business School. She got a full scholarship to Westwood Tech."The second the words left her mouth, Nathan's whole expression changed."Westwood Tech?" he snapped.Claire covered her mouth, acting as if she had misspoken. "W

The day I flew back home, Andrew was the one who came to pick me up at the airport. But instead of heading straight home, the car pulled up in front of a hotel. The second I stepped inside, I froze. Nathan was there. It had only been one summer, but he already looked different—less boyish, a little more grown. My chest tightened. After all those weeks of avoiding him, here he was, standing right in front of me.Andrew noticed my tense expression and gave me an apologetic look. "Nathan's family organized a welcome-back party for you."Mom and Dad didn't know about your fight with him, so they agreed to come. Honestly, I just found out myself."I shook my head, saying it was fine. Sooner or later, I'd have to face Nathan anyway.Andrew spotted some investors nearby and excused himself, leaving me to mingle. I grabbed a drink and moved toward a group of girls I knew. That was when Nathan turned, and our eyes met.I'd told myself I was ready for this moment. But the second it hap

When Phoebe and I started traveling, I made sure to keep myself busy with packed schedules and new places—anything to stop me from overthinking.I didn't unblock Nathan like he asked. But Phoebe and a few of my other friends would sometimes update me on him anyway.Nathan, who used to be too lazy to post anything for months, was suddenly posting every single day.I didn't want to know where he and Claire were going. But somehow, my friends kept sending me updates on him.People asked why I wasn't with him. Everyone was used to seeing me by Nathan's side, so now, they seemed hesitant every time they brought him up.I could tell they suspected something between him and Claire. I mean, a guy and a girl traveling together? People talk. And Nathan wasn't even hiding it—Claire showed up in his posts, as if she belonged there.I told myself that I was fine and that it didn't matter. But every time I saw it, something inside me hurt, like a little stab to the heart. After all, he was so

  • Never Look Back Again   Chapter 4

Not even half an hour after Nathan left, Phoebe sent me a screenshot. It was from Claire's latest post. [My handsome prince brought crepes to save me, the starving princess!]In the picture were the exact same crepes sitting on my dining table.Phoebe's texts came right after, dripping with sarcasm.["The starving princess"? Give me a break.[She makes me sick. Is that really what guys like?]I didn't know about other guys, but Nathan clearly liked it.I stared at the crepes on the table, then picked them up and tossed them straight in the trash. After that, I started gathering everything Nathan had ever left at my place—his stuff, his gifts, all of it. I packed them all up in a box and threw it out, too.I only had five days left before leaving, so it was better to get rid of them now.Five days passed quickly. Nathan never called or texted. Things were probably going very well with Claire.Or maybe he was waiting for me to cave in first. That was how it always went—after e
