Cheyenne looked out the window watching the rain. It had been raining when she woke up and if that hadn't been bad enough she had a text from Nick telling her that with the rain some of the crews wouldn't go out today. He was going to help one of the crews with some problems they were having and wouldn't be in this morning. She had no clue if that meant he wasn't coming in till late or if he just wasn't coming in at all.
As if the world knew she was at the office alone she had been slammed with phone calls, most of which she had no idea of what to tell them so she had to take messages and promise to call them back. She had considered going out for lunch but the way the driveway looked she would need a boat to get down the road. Hearing the phone ring again she sighed walking over to her desk and answering the phone. Rolling her eyes she heard the voice of somebody named Rebecca who had already called at least four times this morning. She had already told her that both Nick and her father were out of the office but one would call her as soon as possible.
Cheyenne held the phone out as the lady started cussing at her. She had about reached her limit with rude people today. "Look mam, I've already told you that either Mr. Morris or Mr. Griffin will call you when they arrive at the office. NO, I'm not giving you their cell phone number. I've already taken your message, I've relayed it, and was told to tell you they will call you. End of story."
The lady started off again but Cheyenne was more interested in the front door opening and a soaking wet Nick walking in the door. Damn, he was hot. His shirt clung to his body and as he ran his hand through his hair he caught Cheyenne's eye on him. Smirking at her he walked forward grabbing the phone out of her hand. "Is there a reason you are yelling at my secretary Mrs. Morales?"
Cheyenne watched him as he leaned against her desk. He looked uninterested in whatever she was telling him. "Ok well, we will have to pass. Good luck finding a new contractor."
As he hung up Cheyenne frowned at him, "So did she fire you or what?"
Nick shook his head walking to his office, "we haven't even started working on her contract, she kept trying to get us to come down on the price but she also keeps wanting added changes. I don't have time for her." Turning to look at Cheyenne he added "you don't have to put up with bullshit, hang up on them, don't answer the phone. I don't care."
Watching as he walked into his office and shut the door Cheyenne remembered the other list of messages she had so she got up walking to his office and instead of nocking walked straight in. He usually didn't shut his door all the way and she honestly was still kinda taken aback by the rude ass lady to even think that his door might be shut for a reason. Her mouth fell open as she saw him standing by his desk with his shirt off. Fuck, he was hot. Nick's clearly worked out, his body was ripped. He didn't have the body of someone who obsessively worked out but he had a defined six-pack.
Nick had never really seen Cheyenne caught off guard and for him to be the reason she stood there speechless amused him far more than it should. Nick had always kept a spare change of clothes at the office. He usually had to change because he had gotten muddy at a construction site. Today it had been the rain that had soaked through him. Pulling on his fresh shirt he smirked at Cheyenne, "are you just going to stand there, or do you have something to say to me?"
Cheyenne looked up making eye contact, "I have lots to say to you but I came to give you this note." Walking up to him she held out her hand, "you've been pretty popular today."
Nick reached out taking the sticky notes from her outstretched hand. "I'd rather hear what you have to say." He looked down at Cheyenne seeing the mischievous glint in her eye. She was still close enough to him that he could reach out and touch her if he so chose. Ever since their little run-in earlier in the week in the hall, he had tried to keep some distance from her. When she was near he lost all rational thought.
Cheyenne shrugged, "I don't know, I don't think you're ready for my honesty."
Nick took a step closer to Cheyenne, "try me."
Tilting her head up to look at him, "what has gotten into you today? Usually, you run from me."
Nick laughed, "I've never run from you, Cheyenne."
"Bullshit," Cheyenne said taking that small step that had kept them apart. "Even right now I can see the panic in your eyes."
Nick looked down at her, she wasn't backing down. She hadn't lied, when she took the step that put her so close to him they were touching he had began to panic. Reason finally settled back in and he was tempted to take a step back but he didn't want to prove her right.
A battle of wills was being played out and Nick found himself tired of coming up the loser with her. He was letting a 19-year-old girl get the best of him. That right there should be reason enough for him to send her back to her desk. Instead, he reached down pulling her chin up with his hand, and kissed her.
Cheyenne had been surprised by his sudden boldness. Her hands rested on his chest as she leaned into him deepening the kiss. The phone's shrill ringing made both of them jump. Nick looked down at Cheyenne shaking his head before he moved to grab the phone. As he began talking she went to walk away but he reached out grabbing her arm. He wasn't letting her walk out of his office before he spoke to her.
He could barely focus on the person on the other end of the phone speaking to him. Cheyenne had turned back around and was now sat atop his desk watching him. Nick had wanted to prove to her he wasn't afraid of her, that he still had full control of the situation. Now he knew he had never had control of Cheyenne, she played her cards and he had fallen into her hands.
Cheyenne could see Nick's wheels spinning in his head. She wished she knew what he was thinking. Had she finally broken through his walls? She hoped him pulling her back to him instead of letting her walk away meant that he was done trying to deny the chemistry between them. It might have been her boredom that had made her first decide to pursue him but they both had an obvious attraction to the other.
Hanging up the phone Nick turned his attention back to Cheyenne, "you do know this is a horrible idea right?"
She watched as Nick moved back in front of her. Reaching out she placed her hands on his arms pulling him even closer to her, "nobody needs to know what happens between us behind closed doors."
Nick stared down at her knowing that any desire he had left to resist her had just abandoned its fight. He had no clue how far she was wanting this to go, no idea what she expected from him, but he was tired of fighting her. She looked back up at him and seconds before their lips connected again the bell from the front door rang.
Cheyenne quickly jumped down from his desk. Nick had turned around and was smoothing his shirt down when he froze hearing Ed's voice from his door. "Man the rain is coming down hard. I could barely see the driveway."
Nick wondered if he was old enough to have a heart attack. Turning around he saw Cheyenne sitting down in the chair in front of his desk looking up at her dad. "I know when Nick got here earlier he was soaked. I'm not getting out in this mess."
Shaking his head Nick glanced at her again wondering how she could look so innocent when seconds earlier she was convincing him that no harm would come from them messing around behind everyone's back. He looked up at Ed as he sat down, "yeah it's pretty bad. I sent Donald and his crew home. I didn't want them doing anything electrical in this."
Ed nodded, "good call."
Cheyenne stood up, "I hope my messages are clear, if you need me to clarify anything else just let me know."
Nick watched as Ed smiled down at his daughter tapping her shoulders as she walked by him. "She hasn't been in your way has she?"
Nick shook his head, "no she's kept things interesting around here."
Shaking his head Ed laughed, "that's Cheyenne all right."
Nick felt the guilt sink in as Ed sat down across from his desk. He was talking about a little of everything but Nick's head was stuck remembering Cheyenne's words, "nobody needs to know what happens between us behind closed doors."
A little after a year after from the notorious front porch talk Ed walked Cheyenne down the aisle to Nick. It was a day that he never could have imagined happening in a million years. He was giving his only daughter away to his best friend. After Nick's talk with Ed, he has moved on to Lindsey. She had acted just as he had expected she would. She went ballistic and drug Nick back to court. Things however didn't work out the way she wanted. She had gone after more money and Nick had gone after more visitation rights. In Lindsey's pursuit of more money, she had succeeded but fell short at the same time. Nick had to pay her an additional 500 a month but he now only had to pay half of Tate's cell phone bill and extracurricular activities. Nick had won more time with Tate in the summer months when he wasn't at school.Lindsey still talked plenty of shit but in the end, there was nothing she could do. As much as she tried to bad mouth Cheyenne and Nick to Tate it was all to
Pulling up at Nick's Cheyenne was a ball of nerves. She had no idea what her dad would say to Nick. The fact that he wanted to talk to him in private worried her even more. What would happen?Nick wasn't in the house so she walked to the backyard finding him in his shop. "Hey," she said walking up slowly. He looked up from his workbench, "where have you been?"Cheyenne shrugged walking up beside him leaning in to kiss him. "Why didn't you tell me my dad hit you?"Pausing Nick looked down at her, "so you went and talked to your dad today? How did that go?"Sighing Cheyenne tilted her head, "Nick, don't bypass my question."He smiled down at her reaching out and pulling her closer to him. "It wasn't worth upsetting you with. Besides he didn't hit me that hard. You'd have known don't you think?"Cheyenne laid her head against his chest, "I guess. He is coming over tonight to talk to you. He asked me to stay away. I don't know how I feel
It was two weeks before Ed said another word to his daughter. Each and every day he avoided the office, he avoided Nick, he avoided having to face the situation altogether.Rachel had tried to take to him about Cheyenne and Nick but it only resulted in a fight between them each time. He didn’t understand why she was ok with this. Cheyenne had no clue what she was getting into. Nick came with baggage. She was making a fool out of him and his business.Today however he couldn’t avoid her. Today she was sitting on the front porch steps waiting on him. Oh sure he could just back up and leave, refuse to talk to her but what kind of dad did that make him. He knew he had to face her eventually. As he approached her Cheyenne looked up and he could see the exhaustion all on her face. It was hard to be mad at her, she was his baby girl, but he was so disappointed in her. He had raised her to be so much better than this.Sitting down beside her he took a
Cheyenne had been a nervous wreck when they made it to Nick's house. She knew Nick wasn't telling her the whole story and it bothered her. She was sure he was only protecting her but she didn't want to be protected. Left to her own thoughts she would make things ten times worse than they probably were. But what if what she was thinking wasn't bad enough? To keep busy she decided to cook dinner, maybe if she could get everyone to just sit down for a bit tempers would calm down. Nick didn't object
Cheyenne had never been as nervous as she was now sitting outside of her dad’s office. Nick was in there now talking to her dad and although she had gotten him to agree to let her come he refused to let her inside the office. Confusion had been written all over Ed’s face when Nick and Cheyenne had walked in together.Ed’s face has fallen the moment he saw Cheyenne. “Cheyenne, what kind of trouble have you gotten yourself into now?”
It had been over a year since Cheyenne had seen Nick. She rarely thought of him at all anymore. Not during the day anyway she thought of him every night. She dreamed of him most nights. Still, she had for the most part moved on.She had managed to make all A’s last semester helping to relieve some of the damage her first year had caused. School was almost a vacation for her. It was a way to fill her mind with anything but Nick. It had helped push his memory back and fill it with other facts.Cheyenne had casually dated a guy named Ryan for a few months. Nothing serious had ever come from it and they still hooked up from time to time. She had no feelings for him, he was only a means to an end that didn’t require any commitment. She had only gone home twice since she had left. Once for Thanksgiving and once for Christmas. Both times she came down and stayed two days leaving the first chance she could. Those times had been hard on her. She refused to leave the house a
