Chapter 2

Rising Cloud in the Mist
The next day, Owen came to find me again.

"Dr. Miller, your watch fell into my pocket."

With a face full of smug satisfaction, he toyed with the watch in his hand.

"This watch is truly exquisite. I'm pretty sure you couldn't find another one like it in all of Lexington."

Hearing the envy in his tone, I merely glanced at the watch coldly. I didn't even extend my hand to take it.

I said, "If you like it, you can have it."

Owen smiled, raised an eyebrow, and set the watch down on the table.

"No, thanks. I don't have a thing for letting other people eavesdrop on me."

My hand froze.

He sat down across from me. "Dr. Miller, did you enjoy what you heard last night? I deliberately brought my coat into the bedroom just so you could hear more clearly.

"Oh, wait. You probably didn't catch some parts too well. After all, Tasha prefers places other than the bedroom."

When I saw his triumphant smile, it dawned on me that he had known everything from the start.

When I remained silent, Owen considerately took out his own phone and played a recording.

"Tasha, between that useless husband of yours and me, who do you love more?"

Tasha, already lost in a daze of passion, answered with a voice hoarse from crying, "How could he ever compare to you?"

Owen put away his phone and said provokingly, "Dr. Miller, I may have to trouble you often in the future. My wife was very satisfied with your skills."

He deliberately drew out the word "wife".

When I didn't react the way he hoped, he actually seemed somewhat disappointed.

He clicked his tongue and said, "No wonder Tasha says you're like a dull block of wood. How about I teach you a few tricks to make a woman ha—Argh!"

One punch from me shoved his words right back down his throat.

"Keegan Miller, how dare a worthless piece of trash like you hit me!"

Owen turned around and tried to lunge at me.

Just then, the door suddenly opened.

Owen's movements halted, and he curved his swollen lips into a smile.

The moment Tasha noticed the blood at the corner of his mouth, her brows knitted hard. Then, she stormed right up and slapped me across the face.

"Keegan, have you lost your mind? How can you just hit someone in the hospital? Is this your idea of decency?"

With that, she lowered her voice and instructed Leah to take Owen away for treatment.

I turned my head, my eyes utterly devoid of life. "Let's get a divorce."

"What?"

I repeated emphatically, "Tasha, let's get a divorce. We're done."

Tasha froze for a moment. Then, seeing that I was completely serious, she let out a scoff.

"Keegan, what kind of fit are you throwing now? If you divorce me, you're the one who's truly finished."

I remained unmoved.

Tasha frowned with impatience. "Just because I have someone on the side, you have to go and blow this completely out of proportion?"

There was no guilt or shame at having been caught cheating. Instead, she began to blame me.

"You should know that everyone in this circle does the same thing. And on top of that, I married a useless loser like you. After all these years of marriage, I've only had this one affair. That already makes me so much better than the rest of them."

Just then, Leah suddenly rushed back in, her face deathly pale.

"Ms. Snyder, bad news! Mr. Diaz was hit by a car right outside the entrance."

When Owen was carried in, his entire body was already drenched in blood.

Tasha looked down at the blood on her hands, panic creeping into her eyes without her noticing.

"What are you still standing there for? Get over here and save him!" she shouted at me furiously.

But the moment Owen saw me, he suddenly began to beg in terror.

"Dr. Miller, I know I was wrong now. I won't cling to Tasha anymore. Please just spare me!"

At the same time, Leah came in with Tasha's men, dragging the driver responsible for the accident.

The moment the man entered, he fell to his knees with a thud. He then grabbed the hem of my pants, pleading, "Dr. Miller, I did everything you asked. Even though I didn't manage to kill this guy, I still did your dirty work! I don't want to go to jail—you've got to save me!"

Tasha couldn't believe it. She threw off her covers and tried to get out of bed."I'll go find another one."No one could hold her down.I blocked her path, my tone biting and ice-cold. "Tasha, do you think I need you to do all this for me? I don't need some miracle cure for my illness. I'll get better as long as you stop bothering me or showing up in front of me. You're the one who's been causing me pain all along!"Tasha's lips trembled, though the hair swept over her eyes made her unreadable. After a long silence, she asked hoarsely, "Keegan, do you really hate me that much?""Yes!" It was as if she had lost all will to live.Mrs. Snyder tried everything she could think of, but nothing could make Tasha pull herself together.Until one day, Tasha accidentally came across a photo online. It was a candid shot taken by a netizen of me seeing a patient, with the caption, "The most stunning sight in Snowstead."In the photo, my features were clear and refined. Just one glance was enough to make Tasha freeze on the spot. She went to great lengths to track down that netizen and obtained the address.Mrs. Snyder knew there was no stopping Tasha."Think this through carefully. The life Keegan has now is one he chose for himself. If you show up, all you'll do is throw everything he has into chaos."Tasha didn't look back. All she did was repeat the same words like a broken record."Every single one of you is lying to me."Mrs. Snyder looked at her devastated daughter and let out a helpless sigh."You're exactly like your father."She gazed out the window at the night, emotions churning in her eyes."Your father once sulked and fought against the family, just like you did. He'd rather die than go through with an arranged marriage, all for some woman. But to both the families involved, his rebellion didn't even register. In the end, none of us ever had a

"There's no need to go. Keegan is dead. You'll never see him again," Mrs. Snyder said."What did you say?" Tasha froze for a moment, then instinctively pushed past the butler, Leonard Cain, to go out the door."Mom, I don't have time for jokes right now. I know you've never liked Keegan, but he's badly injured. I have to go check on him."Seeing that she couldn't stop her, Mrs. Snyder stepped forward and slapped Tasha hard across the face."Haven't you caused enough trouble? Look at yourself! Look at what you've become!""Mrs. Snyder," Owen called out uneasily from the bed. "Please don't blame Tasha. She was only doing it all for me."Mrs. Snyder raised her eyes coldly.Leonard, standing beside her, took the hint and nodded.
