Chapter 4

Author: Rising Cloud in the Mist
I didn't know how much time had passed before I woke up on the ground, the pain jolting me back to consciousness.

Owen was grinding his foot repeatedly against my wound.

"Tasha told you to take care of me before she left, so get the hell up!"

I looked up at him with reddened eyes and laughed coldly. "Even so, she still refuses to divorce me. As long as we're not divorced, you're nothing but a homewrecker who can't show his face in public."

"Why you!" Owen pressed his foot down harder, his face twisting with rage for a moment.

After a while, a vicious grin spread across his face. "It's fine if Tasha won't divorce you. As long as you die, the marriage will end on its own."

Before I could even react, someone behind me covered my mouth and drugged me into unconsciousness.

When I woke up again, I found myself on an abandoned rooftop.

My vision was still blurry. I had barely steadied myself on my feet when the door was kicked open with a violent bang.

"Keegan!"

Tasha's furious voice rang out.

Coming to my senses, I realized that I was clutching a scalpel.

Owen was huddled on the ground in a pathetic heap. "Dr. Miller, I'm sorry. Please let me go."

He clung to my pant leg, pleading over and over.

I shook my head, realizing that the drug he'd given me earlier had hallucinogenic components.

"Keegan, don't do anything rash!"

Owen and I were just a step away from the edge of the rooftop. From Tasha's line of sight, it looked exactly like I was threatening Owen with a knife.

Owen suddenly leaned in close and let out a few sinister, low laughs.

"Don't be in such a hurry. I've also prepared a big surprise for you."

As soon as he finished speaking, a swarm of reporters suddenly burst out from downstairs.

They pointed their cameras and microphones at me.

"Dr. Miller, is it true that before you married Ms. Snyder, you concealed the fact that you had been raped by other men?"

"Dr. Miller, is Ms. Snyder's years-long inability to have a child the result of lingering complications from what happened to you during the abduction case?"

The people downstairs held up their phones and played that humiliating video from back then.

The heartwrenching scream overlapped with the nightmares I'd suffered all these years. I felt as if every drop of blood in my body had frozen solid in an instant.

Tasha's expression also changed drastically. She grabbed the person beside her and shouted, "Who called them here?"

Amid the chaos, Owen suddenly seized my shaking hand, then turned the scalpel around and drove it straight into my stomach.

"Tasha, save me!" Owen screamed as he ran toward Tasha.

But no sooner had he taken a couple of steps than I grabbed him by the hair from behind and yanked him back.

Under Tasha's horrified gaze, I drove the scalpel straight into Owen's groin.

"Remember this—this is what real pain feels like!"

My eyes were bloodshot, tears streaming from the corners.

"If I can't have peace, neither of you will!"

The stab Owen had given me wasn't fatal, but I returned it with merciless force.

Blood pooled on the ground.

A wave of dizziness washed over me. And in that moment, Tasha lunged forward and grabbed Owen right out of my grasp.

Clutching my stomach, I collapsed to my knees.

Before I lost consciousness, the only thing I heard was Tasha saying coldly, "Keegan has gone mad. Lock him up in the asylum. Don't let him come out and hurt anyone ever again!"

"Ms. Snyder, committing someone to the asylum requires a family member's signature."

Tasha was in a hurry to get Owen treated, so she signed her name without even looking.

When Owen woke up and learned that his manhood had been severed, he completely broke down, screaming that he wanted to kill me.

"Tasha, the doctor said I'm a cripple now, and it's all Keegan's fault!"

Tasha tried her best to comfort him, though inwardly she was consumed by inexplicable restlessness.

I had lost a significant amount of blood, and she knew how stubborn I could be, so she couldn't help wondering whether I would refuse medical treatment.

At that thought, she finally couldn't restrain herself anymore. She stood and headed for the door, but it swung open before she could reach it.

"Mom?"

As Tasha stood there in stunned disbelief, Mrs. Snyder coldly spoke up. The words that came out of her mouth made Tasha's face turn deathly pale in an instant.

Tasha was unconscious for three days. In the end, she barely pulled through. She remembered nothing of what had happened during her hypothermia, so the first thing she asked about when she woke up was the snow lotus.Just as everyone else was at a loss for how to answer, I walked in carrying her medicine and set it down coldly. Then, I said, "I already fed it to the dogs." Tasha couldn't believe it. She threw off her covers and tried to get out of bed."I'll go find another one."No one could hold her down.I blocked her path, my tone biting and ice-cold. "Tasha, do you think I need you to do all this for me? I don't need some miracle cure for my illness. I'll get better as long as you stop bothering me or showing up in front of me. You're the one who's been causing me pain all along!"Tasha's lips trembled, though the hair swept over her eyes made her unreadable. After a long silence, she asked hoarsely, "Keegan, do you really hate me that much?""Yes!" I lifted my head and

In the end, Tasha didn't leave.I had thought the bitter cold and the altitude sickness would drive her away. But to my surprise, she actually bought a house and settled down in Snowstead.Every day during my consultations, the patients who came in couldn't resist reminding me, "Dr. Miller, that beautiful woman is watching you from a distance again."So, I simply shut the front gates altogether.Seeing that I truly found her annoying, Tasha no longer dared to loiter in front of me.Late at night, I vaguely heard some sounds coming from outside the window. But I was far too exhausted to get up and check. The next morning, I was surprised to find that the window, which had been broken by the wind, had been repaired. In fact, it was even sturdier than before.Another day, someone knocked on the clinic door late at night.I thought it was a patient. But when I opened the door, there was no one there. Instead, I found a large bucket of hot water sitting on the ground.During winter

Tasha was ultimately saved. But from that day on, she refused to eat or drink. All she did was stare blankly out the window. It was as if she had lost all will to live.Mrs. Snyder tried everything she could think of, but nothing could make Tasha pull herself together.Until one day, Tasha accidentally came across a photo online. It was a candid shot taken by a netizen of me seeing a patient, with the caption, "The most stunning sight in Snowstead."In the photo, my features were clear and refined. Just one glance was enough to make Tasha freeze on the spot. She went to great lengths to track down that netizen and obtained the address.Mrs. Snyder knew there was no stopping Tasha."Think this through carefully. The life Keegan has now is one he chose for himself. If you show up, all you'll do is throw everything he has into chaos."Tasha didn't look back. Instead, she simply boarded the plane with unwavering resolve."Mom, without him, I'll die. Even if I have to die, I'll di

That night, the renowned CEO of Snyder Group drove all over the city, searching every hospital. Tasha asked every person she met if they had seen me.This frenzy continued until the late hours of the night, until Mrs. Snyder finally had her people forcibly bring Tasha back home.Tasha was still clutching the death certificate tightly in her hand, her bloodshot eyes completely drained of all light. She refused to communicate with the outside world. All she did was repeat the same words like a broken record."Every single one of you is lying to me."Mrs. Snyder looked at her devastated daughter and let out a helpless sigh."You're exactly like your father."She gazed out the window at the night, emotions churning in her eyes."Your father once sulked and fought against the family, just like you did. He'd rather die than go through with an arranged marriage, all for some woman. But to both the families involved, his rebellion didn't even register. In the end, none of us ever had a

"There's no need to go. Keegan is dead. You'll never see him again," Mrs. Snyder said."What did you say?" Tasha froze for a moment, then instinctively pushed past the butler, Leonard Cain, to go out the door."Mom, I don't have time for jokes right now. I know you've never liked Keegan, but he's badly injured. I have to go check on him."Seeing that she couldn't stop her, Mrs. Snyder stepped forward and slapped Tasha hard across the face."Haven't you caused enough trouble? Look at yourself! Look at what you've become!""Mrs. Snyder," Owen called out uneasily from the bed. "Please don't blame Tasha. She was only doing it all for me."Mrs. Snyder raised her eyes coldly.Leonard, standing beside her, took the hint and nodded. He stepped up and delivered two slaps, one on each side of Owen's face."When Mrs. Snyder is speaking to Ms. Snyder, outsiders have no right to interrupt."Blood trickled from the corner of Owen's mouth where he'd been struck, yet he didn't dare to fight b
