My River.

Noah’s POV

The stadium lights hadn’t even warmed up all the way yet, and sweat was already dripping down the side of my face. The field smelled like cut grass and damp earth, the way it always did after a night of practice. I should have been focused on drills, on footwork, on the ball bouncing between us. We had a competition coming up, and coach had been drilling us hard about staying sharp.

But my head wasn’t on the ball.

It never was these days. Not when I’d catch myself wondering if River had eaten dinner, if he was sketching something in the art room, if he was curled up on that old couch with his knees pulled up.

“Hey, did you see that article?” Mark’s voice broke across the field like a bad note in a song.

I ignored him at first, sending the ball down the line, but he didn’t stop.

“About your boy and that professor? Freaking disgusting.”

The words landed sharp in my chest. My foot froze mid-step.

One of the other guys groaned. “Drop it, man. Nobody wants to hear it.”

But Mark

  • Never Mine To Love   The wait.

River's Pov.The kitchen was quiet, too quiet for the morning. The sun was already creeping in through the blinds, spilling long lines of light across the tiled floor, but nothing about it felt warm. My feet kept moving back and forth, bare soles against the cold tiles, the sound of them almost matching the pounding in my head. I hadn’t slept. Every time I tried, my mind kept dragging me back to the same place, the same thought, the same face.Karden.The name itself had begun to sound heavy, like a stone pressing down on me. I kept pacing because if I stopped, I would have to sit with that weight. I didn’t want to, but it was there anyway. I couldn’t ignore it anymore. Last night I had tried to convince myself that maybe it was coincidence, maybe the pieces didn’t fit the way I thought. But they did. They fit too well.Ethan’s words echoed in my head like they had been carved into the walls. He didn’t say it directly, but he didn’t need to. The look in his eyes had been enough. He wa

  • Never Mine To Love   Reunion.

Daniel's Pov.The next morning light was soft when I arrived at the house. I stood in the driveway for a moment before stepping out of my car. Olivia had been discharged earlier that morning, and Elliott had sent me a text to let me know she was resting. Even though the doctors had said it was just stress, I couldn’t shake off the weight in my chest. I didn’t want to hover, but I also didn’t want to stay away.I walked up the porch slowly and pressed the bell. Elliott opened the door, his hair messy, and he looked like he hadn’t gotten much sleep.“Dad,” he said quietly.I nodded. “How is she?”“She’s lying down. She woke up for a bit earlier, but she’s tired. You should come in.”I stepped inside. The house was quiet, too quiet for a place that usually carried the sound of Olivia’s footsteps or Elliott’s music playing faintly from his room. I followed him into the living room. Olivia was sitting on the couch with a blanket over her legs. Her skin still looked pale, but she managed a

  • Never Mine To Love   No more hate.

Daniel’s POVThe morning light slipped through the blinds, drawing thin lines across the pale hospital wall. The room was quiet except for the steady hum of the air vent and the slow drip of the IV beside the bed. I hadn’t slept much. The chair I had sat on all night left a deep stiffness in my shoulders, but I hadn’t moved far from Olivia’s side. I couldn’t. Every small shift she made in her sleep pulled me alert, like my body was wired to wait for something else to go wrong.I had watched her all night, her chest rising and falling in shallow rhythm, her lips parting every so often as if she were about to speak but didn’t. Her face looked pale, too pale for someone who always carried herself with such stubborn strength. It unsettled me more than I cared to admit. She stirred once, rolling slightly on the bed. Her hand twitched near the blanket but she didn’t wake. The IV drip kept its rhythm, steady and slow, a sound that had started to sink into me like a reminder that she was stil

  • Never Mine To Love   Hospital.

Daniel’s POV.The moment I dropped the phone after Elliott’s voice echoed in my ear, I didn’t think twice. My son had said four words that ripped the air out of me, “Mom has collapsed.” My heart jolted as if someone had just slammed a fist into my chest.I was already outside with Christian, heading toward our cars. The night air was thick, the streets buzzing, but all I could hear was my son’s frightened voice. My hands shook a little as I shoved the phone into my pocket.“Daniel, what’s wrong?” Christian asked, stepping closer, reading the sudden panic on my face.“Olivia collapsed. I have to go,” I said quickly, already moving toward my car.“Do you want me to come with you?”I shook my head, sliding into the driver’s seat. “No. Stay on what we talked about. Keep digging. I’ll handle this.”He gave a small nod, eyes narrowing in worry. “Call me if you need anything.”I didn’t waste another second. My car roared to life, and I sped out into the street, weaving through traffic with l

  • Never Mine To Love   The Search.

Daniel’s POVChristian glanced at me once as we walked to his car as we left the restaurant, his expression unreadable in the dim light. “You look like you haven’t slept in days,” he said finally.“I haven’t,” I admitted. My voice came out rougher than I wanted. “Not properly. Not since all this started. Every time I close my eyes, I see River’s face. I hear Karden’s voice, and I keep wondering if he’s already sent those pictures somewhere I can’t stop them from spreading.”Christian didn’t respond right away. He unlocked his car, slid inside, and waited until I did the same before speaking. “We’ll find something, Daniel. But you need to be prepared. People like Karden don’t make mistakes easily. If he’s bold enough to threaten you, then he’s already convinced he covered his tracks.”I clenched my fists against my knees, trying to keep my breathing steady. “There has to be something. Nobody’s that careful.”Christian started the engine. “That’s what we’re going to test.”We drove in s

  • Never Mine To Love   Traffic.

River's Pov.The car was quiet except for the sound of other vehicles honking around us. Traffic was thick, moving slowly like we were crawling through the streets. The evening sun had started to dip, painting the sky in soft orange, but inside the car, the air felt tight. I leaned my head against the window and watched people walking by. Some were in a rush, some looked tired, others were just going about their lives like nothing was wrong. Meanwhile, my chest felt heavy, and my thoughts kept circling back to Karden, to Ethan, to everything that had been happening.Noah had one hand on the wheel and the other resting on his thigh. His jaw was tight, eyes fixed on the road even though we weren’t moving much. I could tell something was going through his head. He looked calm on the surface, but I’d been around him long enough to know better.I turned slightly to face him. “Are you going to tell me what’s going on, or are we just going to sit here pretending everything is fine?”He didn’
