Noah’s POV

My hands wouldn’t stop shaking as I pulled my phone out, my other arm wrapped tight around River like I was afraid he’d slip away if I loosened my hold. He was too still. Too quiet. His body was heavy against mine, his weight telling me he was here, but the soft rise of his chest was faint, like each breath had to wrestle its way out of him.

I couldn’t breathe right either. Every inhale scraped through me, shallow and sharp.

“Come on,” I muttered, fumbling with the screen. My thumb didn’t seem to know how to work anymore, slipping over icons, hitting the wrong numbers, until finally I found the one name I needed. Lydia.

I pressed it. Listened to the rings that stretched too long, too empty.

Once. Twice. Three times.

Then a voice came.“Hello?”

Her voice was calm. Steady. That sound almost undid me. I could’ve fallen apart right there, just hearing her like that.

“Lydia, it’s Noah.” My voice cracked, breaking in the middle. “It’s River, he.... he’s not....he had some kind of

Daniel’s POV.The moment I dropped the phone after Elliott’s voice echoed in my ear, I didn’t think twice. My son had said four words that ripped the air out of me, “Mom has collapsed.” My heart jolted as if someone had just slammed a fist into my chest.I was already outside with Christian, heading toward our cars. The night air was thick, the streets buzzing, but all I could hear was my son’s frightened voice. My hands shook a little as I shoved the phone into my pocket.“Daniel, what’s wrong?” Christian asked, stepping closer, reading the sudden panic on my face.“Olivia collapsed. I have to go,” I said quickly, already moving toward my car.“Do you want me to come with you?”I shook my head, sliding into the driver’s seat. “No. Stay on what we talked about. Keep digging. I’ll handle this.”He gave a small nod, eyes narrowing in worry. “Call me if you need anything.”I didn’t waste another second. My car roared to life, and I sped out into the street, weaving through traffic with l

  • Never Mine To Love   The Search.

Daniel’s POVChristian glanced at me once as we walked to his car as we left the restaurant, his expression unreadable in the dim light. “You look like you haven’t slept in days,” he said finally.“I haven’t,” I admitted. My voice came out rougher than I wanted. “Not properly. Not since all this started. Every time I close my eyes, I see River’s face. I hear Karden’s voice, and I keep wondering if he’s already sent those pictures somewhere I can’t stop them from spreading.”Christian didn’t respond right away. He unlocked his car, slid inside, and waited until I did the same before speaking. “We’ll find something, Daniel. But you need to be prepared. People like Karden don’t make mistakes easily. If he’s bold enough to threaten you, then he’s already convinced he covered his tracks.”I clenched my fists against my knees, trying to keep my breathing steady. “There has to be something. Nobody’s that careful.”Christian started the engine. “That’s what we’re going to test.”We drove in s

  • Never Mine To Love   Traffic.

River's Pov.The car was quiet except for the sound of other vehicles honking around us. Traffic was thick, moving slowly like we were crawling through the streets. The evening sun had started to dip, painting the sky in soft orange, but inside the car, the air felt tight. I leaned my head against the window and watched people walking by. Some were in a rush, some looked tired, others were just going about their lives like nothing was wrong. Meanwhile, my chest felt heavy, and my thoughts kept circling back to Karden, to Ethan, to everything that had been happening.Noah had one hand on the wheel and the other resting on his thigh. His jaw was tight, eyes fixed on the road even though we weren’t moving much. I could tell something was going through his head. He looked calm on the surface, but I’d been around him long enough to know better.I turned slightly to face him. “Are you going to tell me what’s going on, or are we just going to sit here pretending everything is fine?”He didn’

  • Never Mine To Love   Anything Stupid.

Daniel’s POVThe call with Karden had ended hours ago, but his voice was still in my head. Arrogant, smug, dripping with the kind of confidence only someone too young to understand the world could carry. He thought he could use me like a chess piece, like I was too weak to push back. He was wrong.I sat in my office, the lamp burning low. My desk was cluttered with papers I had stopped grading, my pen lying across the page. I stared at my phone, the recording app open, the file saved neatly. Karden’s voice was clear in it, threatening me, trying to control me.For a long moment, I debated. I wasn’t the type to drag anyone into my mess. I had kept silent about too many things, things I should have spoken up about sooner. But Karden had crossed the line. He wasn’t just destroying me, he was playing with other people’s lives.I scrolled through my contacts until I landed on a name I hadn’t touched in years. Christian Hale.I hesitated only once before pressing call. The line rang, then a

  • Never Mine To Love   Meant Nothing.

River’s POVI didn’t know what I was expecting when Ethan finally showed up at Old Paul’s, but I swear, for a second, I almost didn’t recognize him. He looked… older, heavier, like he had carried something all night that had dragged the life out of him. His hair was a little messy, his jaw tight, and when his eyes swept the room and finally landed on us, my chest pulled tight. He walked over slow, like every step weighed something. I shifted in my chair, pretending to sip from my drink, but my throat was dry. Noah sat across from me, his hands folded on the table like he’d been bracing himself for this moment since the call came in.Ethan didn’t even ask if the seat was free, he just pulled it out and sat beside me. The scrape of the chair against the floor made me flinch. His shoulder brushed mine, warm, tense, and for a moment all I could do was stare at his face.He looked wrecked.“Thanks for coming,” he muttered, voice low, like he didn’t want anyone else to hear.I swallowed, my

  • Never Mine To Love   Something Brewing.

River's Pov.My stomach was still in knots when Noah told me he wanted to go see Ethan alone. He said it like it was nothing, like it made sense, but it didn’t sit right with me.“You’re not going without me,” I told him flat out. My voice cracked a little, but I meant it.Noah’s hand tightened on his car keys, his jaw set the way it always did when he was trying to hold his ground. “River, maybe it’s better if I go first. Just to talk to him, to figure out what’s going on. You’ve been through enough already.”I shook my head before he could finish. “No. We go together. I want to know what’s happening, Noah. I’m not going to sit around waiting for you to come back and tell me half of it. Not this time.”His eyes softened, but I saw the hesitation there, too. “River…”“I’m serious,” I cut him off. “If you walk out that door without me, don’t bother coming back.”That got him. His shoulders dropped, and he let out a long breath. “Alright.”Relief washed over me, though my chest was stil
