Noah's Pov.

I showed up at River’s place about twenty minutes later, carrying a grocery bag full of snacks I wasn’t sure he’d like, my favorite hoodie just in case, and a head full of thoughts I couldn’t quite shake.

I wasn’t myself.

The whole walk over, I kept replaying what happened in the shower. I told myself to stop, to let it go, to forget it but it clung to me like heat under my skin.

The door opened before I could even knock properly. Karden was there, leaning against the frame with that same look he always gave me, somewhere between suspicion and boredom.

“River said you were coming,” he muttered.

“Lucky you.”

His eyes dropped to the bag in my hand. “Is that popcorn?”

“Maybe.”

“Don’t eat it all.”

“No promises,” I said, stepping in before he changed his mind.

River’s apartment was a mess. Not in a gross way. Just… cluttered. Notes and cables everywhere. The lights were dim, and the laptop screen glowed in the center of it all like it was holding the universe together.

  • Never Mine To Love   Business As Usual.

River's POV.Noah and I hadn’t really talked about the almost-kiss. Not on the car ride home, not in texts, not even when he sent me that dumb meme of a raccoon shoving Cheetos in its mouth with the caption “us at 3AM.” I’d stared at that meme longer than I’d like to admit, smiled a little too hard at it, and sent back something just as stupid, because that’s what we did. We joked. We laughed. We pretended like everything was normal. And I told myself that was okay.It was easier that way. Easier to act like nothing had happened, like I hadn’t leaned in too close, like my heart hadn’t almost jumped out of my chest when I thought, just for a second that he was going to kiss me.But he didn’t. And I didn’t either. And now we were back to sharing memes and avoiding eye contact for too long.Totally normal.Except it didn’t feel normal. Not really.Every time I looked at him now, something in my chest tightened. Not in a painful way. Just… weird. Like heat blooming under my skin, like my

  • Never Mine To Love   Noah's Affair.

Noah's Pov.I barely made it two steps inside before the weight of what almost happened hit me again.River.His face. His damn lips—so close I could’ve counted the freckles on them. I’d almost kissed him. I should’ve been disgusted. I should’ve pulled away, laughed it off, blamed it on the moment. But I didn’t.Instead, I froze, staring at his mouth like it meant something. And now, here I was, heart thudding in my chest over some guy whose mouth I can’t stop picturing.“What the hell is wrong with me?” I muttered, dragging a hand through my hair.A knock broke the silence.I blinked, turning toward the door. Another knock. Lighter this time, and quick — like whoever was on the other side didn’t want to seem too eager.I opened the door. And instantly forgot how to speak. She was leaning one shoulder against the doorframe, wearing tight black gym shorts that clung to her hips like sin itself. A grey sports bra hugged her breasts so tightly it was impossible not to look and trust me,

  • Never Mine To Love   The Next Clue?

River's Pov.Noah blinked first. His eyes dropped from mine, and he stepped back just slightly. Not a lot, just enough to break whatever that moment was. His hand still hovered near my face, like he hadn’t decided what to do with it.“Think I got it,” he said, voice lighter than before. A little forced. Like he was trying too hard to sound normal.I nodded and blinked a few more times just to be sure whatever it was had cleared out. “Thanks.”We stood there in silence for a few seconds too long. Not speaking. Not moving. The air felt heavier than it had a minute ago. Like something had shifted, even though neither of us said anything about it.It wasn’t awkward.Just... charged. Then Noah ruffled my hair like some annoying older brother. “You always get stuff in your eye at the most dramatic moments.”I smacked his hand away. “Gotta keep things interesting.”He grinned and tossed his water bottle from one hand to the other. “You sure know how to time it. Next time, wait until I score

  • Never Mine To Love   A bug.

River's Pov.I was halfway through a bowl of cereal I didn’t want when my phone buzzed across the table.Noah: We’re at practice. Get your lazy ass here.Charming as always.I stared at the message for a second, spoon still in my mouth, and then sighed. It wasn’t even a full sentence—just a command. Typical Noah.I dropped the spoon into the soggy mess and wiped my hands on my shorts. The cereal had already gone soft anyway. Didn’t matter. I wasn’t hungry.Grabbing the hoodie off the back of the chair, I pulled it over my head and headed for the door. “I’m heading out!” I called toward Ethan’s room as I slipped on my sneakers. His door cracked open and he peeked out, toothbrush in hand. Foam was collecting at the corners of his mouth. “Where?”“Field.”He nodded once and ducked back in without another word.I grabbed my keys and stepped outside before I could change my mind. There was always the option of staying in. Laying around. Letting the day pass. But then I’d be alone with my t

  • Never Mine To Love   Talk.

Daniel's Pov.It had rained that morning. Not a big, wild storm or anything dramatic. Just one of those quiet, steady rains that taps gently on the windows and makes the whole world smell like wet leaves and muddy grass. You know the kind. Where everything feels soft and gray, like the sky forgot to drink its coffee and now it’s just… dragging. The sky looked tired. Really tired. Like it had cried all night and now didn’t have the energy to pull itself together. It was pale gray and a little moody, hanging low like it wanted to wrap itself in a blanket and call in sick.Honestly? Same.I was in my office, pretending to work, a student report open right in front of me. I’d been “reading” it for—who knows—twenty minutes? Thirty? It could’ve been an hour. I hadn’t read a single word.My eyes kept doing that thing where they wander off without permission, like bored kids sneaking out of class. They drifted toward the corner of my desk.To my phone.Just sitting there. So still. So quiet.
