Chapter 3

Author: Midnight Visitor
Matthew's expression instantly turned rather gloomy. He took a deep breath and explained in a heavy tone, "Jamie, I just hope you'll pay her a visit. She really likes you and keeps talking about you. She says you're exactly the daughter-in-law she wants. Just... have some pity for an old lady. Go and visit her, will you?"

His voice held a slight tremor, and his eyes were slightly red.

I put the book in my hand back on the bookshelf and turned around to leave.

"Jamie! Are you that heartless?" Matthew's voice suddenly rose.

The people around us all looked at us.

I stopped and met his slightly displeased gaze with utter calmness. "Mr. Zackman, please watch your words. We have nothing to do with each other except for a failed blind date. You're making so much noise in public that you're bothering me."

His chest rose and fell violently. He was clearly furious.

"Okay, okay, okay," he repeated himself with a gloomy look in his eyes.

"Jamie, I'll remember this." He turned around and hurried away, looking somewhat disheveled.

I received a call from an unknown number that night. A frail, elderly woman's voice said, "Is… Is this Ms. Linsworth?"

I immediately recognized the owner of the voice—Matthew's mother, Cassandra Zigger.

"Mrs. Zackman, hello," I replied politely but distantly.

Cassandra lamented on the phone, "Oh, Jamie. I know Matthew isn't lucky enough to be with a wonderful woman like you. But... But I just want to see you and say a few words to you in person. Otherwise, it'll weigh on my chest. I'm afraid… I'm afraid I won't be able to get over it."

Her voice trembled with emotion as she spoke.

I gripped the phone and stayed silent.

She had also done this in my previous life. Every time Matthew wanted something from me, she would conveniently fall ill, feel something weighing on her chest, or feel like she was dying. Time and time again, I became soft-hearted and gave in.

"Jamie, I don't ask for anything else. I just beg you to come to the hospital and see me, okay? Just... pity me." Her voice was full of pleading as if I would disagree.

I took a deep breath, knowing they would stick to me like glue if this was not resolved once and for all. I agreed. "Okay. Send me the address. I'll be there tomorrow afternoon."

After I hung up, I looked out at the night sky. My eyes grew colder. Since Matthew and his mother were insisting on putting on this show, I would play along. However, this time, I would write the script.

The next afternoon, I arrived at the hospital as promised. Just as I reached the entrance to the inpatient department, I saw Rosalie waiting there.

She was wearing a simple white dress with light makeup. She immediately came to greet me, her expression full of worry.

"Jamie, you're finally here! Mrs. Zackman... hasn't eaten anything since this morning. She keeps talking about you." Rosalie naturally took my arm as if we were still best friends who could talk about anything.

"Is that so?" I casually pulled my hand away. "Let's hurry inside. Don't keep the old lady waiting."

Rosalie's eyes flickered for a moment before she returned to her gentle and kind demeanor as she led me toward the ward.

The moment I pushed open the ward door, the strong smell of medicine struck me in the face. Cassandra was lying weakly on the bed. Matthew sat beside her, feeding her water.

Seeing me enter, Cassandra's eyes lit up instantly. She struggled to sit up. "Jamie. Jamie, you're here..."

Over the next two days, public opinion online intensified. Someone claiming to be Matthew's colleague revealed that Matthew was an honest and good teacher, but he was now being boycotted in the school because he married Rosalie and offended me.For a moment, I became the target of condemnation across the entire internet. I shut myself in the studio, not daring to go out or look at my phone. It was not until the morning of the third day that things took a shocking turn.A well-known legal blogger published a long article, which clearly and systematically listed all the doubts and legal risks in these posts.Immediately after, the legal department of Blaze's company published a strongly worded lawyer's letter, naming Rosalie and Matthew, as well as several social media accounts that spread the most rumors, and demanded they immediately delete the false information, make a public apology, and pay a huge amount of compensation for mental distress. The most fatal blow was a leaked audi

I laughed.Matthew was an extremely selfish and chauvinistic person at heart. What he needed was a wife who was more like a housekeeper, someone who could selflessly dedicate herself to him and work hard without complaint; not a princess who needed him to comfort her and take care of her.Matthew's face turned ashen. He was clearly embarrassed by being exposed by Rosalie in public."Enough! Stop embarrassing yourself!" He growled and forcibly dragged Rosalie away.Rosalie held on tightly as tears and snot streamed down her face. "I'm not leaving! Jamie, I beg you to spare us! You already have such a good man. Why are you still clinging to Matthew? Could you return him to me?"She twisted the truth, portraying herself as a pitiful wife whose husband was stolen by a mistress. The way the crowd, who were unaware of the truth, looked at me changed.I was so angry that I felt cold all over.Blaze grabbed my hand, pulled me behind him, and stepped forward, his tall frame exuding an im

We talked a lot, from design concepts to our future plans. I found that he and I were astonishingly compatible in many aspects. It was a feeling that I had never experienced with Matthew. In the 20 years I spent with Matthew, I was always the one who made the effort and looked up to. He would talk about his academic pursuits and his aspirations, while I could only wander in the mundane affairs of daily life and the ways of the world. There was an insurmountable chasm between us.With Blaze, we were equals and appreciated each other. It was a pleasant meal. After exiting the restaurant, we walked side by side by the river. The evening breeze was gentle and comfortable.Blaze suddenly stopped and looked at me. "Jamie, what are your plans after the postgraduate entrance exam results come out?""If I pass, I'll enroll in the academy. If not, I'll focus on running my studio," I replied."Have you ever thought about... another possibility?""What?"He looked into my eyes and uttered

I frowned and wanted to hang up.Matthew seemed to have guessed what I was going to do and hurriedly added, "Don't hang up yet! I'll just say a few words. Rosie... Rosie and I are getting married.""Congratulations." My voice did not waver the slightest bit.Matthew was silent for a few seconds, seemingly a little uncomfortable with my indifference. He struggled to utter, "She's pregnant."I raised my eyebrows. This was beyond my expectations. It seemed Rosalie had spared no expense to marry him as soon as possible."Congratulations again. It's a double celebration."My calmness seemed to enrage him. "Jamie! Don't you have anything else to say? If you hadn't rejected me back then, the one now pregnant with my child and set to marry me would be you!"His shameless logic almost made me laugh indignantly. I said coldly, "Matthew, I've only gone on a blind date with you once. I've only met you a few times. Is it appropriate to say all this now?" "I..." He was made speechless."An

That painting was one of my proudest artworks. I thought no one else would remember it except me. Unexpectedly, Blaze still remembered it after so many years had passed. I felt a gentle tingle in the bottom of my heart."I..." I opened my mouth but did not know what to say."Do you want to apply for a postgraduate program at an art academy?" he asked."Yeah.""You can contact me if you need help. I majored in design in college. Maybe I can give you some advice."Looking at his well-defined profile, I felt a myriad of emotions in my heart. My life had revolved around Matthew in my past life. I regarded him as my whole world, so I did not know that there were people in places I could not see who remembered my ambition."Okay." I nodded vigorously. This time, I would not let myself down again.Blaze sent me home. After I got out of the car, he rolled down the window. "I'll have my assistant contact you about the studio tomorrow.""Sorry to trouble you."He looked at me solemnly.

The man glanced at the ward. His brows were slightly furrowed before his gaze finally fell on me. "Jamie?"I paused. I knew him. He was Blaze Stanton, my former classmate. He was a well-known figure in our high school. However, he came from a wealthy family and was rebellious. He almost had nothing to do with a well-behaved and good student like me.What was he doing here?Blaze ignored the rest and walked straight up to me, handing me a document. "Here's the information you want. Also, I heard you're looking for a studio. I have a friend who's renting out his place in the southern part of the city. The environment is nice. I can help you get in touch if you need it."His appearance instantly broke the oppressive atmosphere in the ward.Matthew looked at Blaze and then at me, his eyes brimming with caution." You... know each other?"Before I could reply, Blaze glanced icily at him. "What's it to you?"He turned back to me, his tone softening. "It stinks in here. Let's go. I'll t
