Chapter 1

The smile on Matthew Zackman's face froze. He propped up the gold-rimmed glasses on his nose bridge, his tone still gentle. "Ms. Linsworth, do we have a misunderstanding here? We can take our time getting to know each other. No need to come to that conclusion so quickly."

The matchmaker, Miriam Winston, also got anxious and grabbed my hand. "Oh, Jamie, you silly girl! It's hard to find a fine man like Mr. Zackman, even if you search high and low! Don't be foolish!"

I gently withdrew my hand as my gaze calmly fell upon Matthew. In my previous life, it was his gentle and refined appearance that deceived me for an entire lifetime.

I had thought he would not be poor forever and that his character made him one of a kind, so I took out all my savings, gave up the opportunity to further my studies at an art academy, and stayed with him in that small town. I took care of the house for him, entertained his superiors for him, and gradually paved the way to a bright future for him.

However, what happened in the end? After achieving success and fame, the first thing he did was to kick me away.

I smiled slightly. "Mr. Zackman, it's not a misunderstanding. You're great. It's just that I'm not good enough for you." Having said that, I stood up, took my bag, and turned around to leave.

"Jamie!" Matthew grabbed my wrist at once.

I turned around and looked at him icily.

He seemed to realize he had lost his composure and loosened his grip. "Ms. Linsworth, I just find it a pity. I promised my mother I'd find a wife as gentle and virtuous as you. I—"

I interrupted him and forcefully shook off his hand. "Then keep looking, Mr. Zackman. Stop following me. It's unsightly."

I walked out of the noisy café without looking back.

The early summer breeze brushed against my face with a hint of warmth, and I let out a long sigh of relief, thinking how great it was. It was not too late to change things.

Just then, my best friend, Rosalie Beck, called.

I swiped to answer the call, and her soft, concerned voice immediately came through. "Jamie, how did the blind date go? Ms. Winston said Mr. Zackman is a really nice guy. Did you meet him?"

I leaned against a sycamore tree by the roadside. Watching the mottled shadows cast from the tree, I chuckled softly. "Yes."

"That's great! What's he like? Is he as Ms. Winston said?"

"Yeah, he's got potential," I answered flatly.

Rosalie, on the other end of the line, seemed relieved. Her voice was full of joy. "I knew it! Jamie, you have to seize the opportunity! For a woman, marrying a good man is more important than anything else! Don't worry. I'll treat Mr. Zackman like a brother after you marry him!"

She had said the same thing in my past life.

Then, while I was overwhelmed with caring for my mother-in-law, she wore the dress I bought to comfort Matthew. While I was begging for funding for his research project, she accompanied him to various academic conferences as his confidante. In the end, she held my husband's arm as she told me, "Jamie, I'm sorry. Love is uncontrollable."

I closed my eyes, suppressing the simmering hatred within me. "Rosalie, why don't I give him to you if you think he's a good man?"

On the other end of the line, Rosalie's breath hitched.

Over the next two days, public opinion online intensified. Someone claiming to be Matthew's colleague revealed that Matthew was an honest and good teacher, but he was now being boycotted in the school because he married Rosalie and offended me.For a moment, I became the target of condemnation across the entire internet. I shut myself in the studio, not daring to go out or look at my phone. It was not until the morning of the third day that things took a shocking turn.A well-known legal blogger published a long article, which clearly and systematically listed all the doubts and legal risks in these posts.Immediately after, the legal department of Blaze's company published a strongly worded lawyer's letter, naming Rosalie and Matthew, as well as several social media accounts that spread the most rumors, and demanded they immediately delete the false information, make a public apology, and pay a huge amount of compensation for mental distress. The most fatal blow was a leaked audi

I laughed.Matthew was an extremely selfish and chauvinistic person at heart. What he needed was a wife who was more like a housekeeper, someone who could selflessly dedicate herself to him and work hard without complaint; not a princess who needed him to comfort her and take care of her.Matthew's face turned ashen. He was clearly embarrassed by being exposed by Rosalie in public."Enough! Stop embarrassing yourself!" He growled and forcibly dragged Rosalie away.Rosalie held on tightly as tears and snot streamed down her face. "I'm not leaving! Jamie, I beg you to spare us! You already have such a good man. Why are you still clinging to Matthew? Could you return him to me?"She twisted the truth, portraying herself as a pitiful wife whose husband was stolen by a mistress. The way the crowd, who were unaware of the truth, looked at me changed.I was so angry that I felt cold all over.Blaze grabbed my hand, pulled me behind him, and stepped forward, his tall frame exuding an im

We talked a lot, from design concepts to our future plans. I found that he and I were astonishingly compatible in many aspects. It was a feeling that I had never experienced with Matthew. In the 20 years I spent with Matthew, I was always the one who made the effort and looked up to. He would talk about his academic pursuits and his aspirations, while I could only wander in the mundane affairs of daily life and the ways of the world. There was an insurmountable chasm between us.With Blaze, we were equals and appreciated each other. It was a pleasant meal. After exiting the restaurant, we walked side by side by the river. The evening breeze was gentle and comfortable.Blaze suddenly stopped and looked at me. "Jamie, what are your plans after the postgraduate entrance exam results come out?""If I pass, I'll enroll in the academy. If not, I'll focus on running my studio," I replied."Have you ever thought about... another possibility?""What?"He looked into my eyes and uttered

I frowned and wanted to hang up.Matthew seemed to have guessed what I was going to do and hurriedly added, "Don't hang up yet! I'll just say a few words. Rosie... Rosie and I are getting married.""Congratulations." My voice did not waver the slightest bit.Matthew was silent for a few seconds, seemingly a little uncomfortable with my indifference. He struggled to utter, "She's pregnant."I raised my eyebrows. This was beyond my expectations. It seemed Rosalie had spared no expense to marry him as soon as possible."Congratulations again. It's a double celebration."My calmness seemed to enrage him. "Jamie! Don't you have anything else to say? If you hadn't rejected me back then, the one now pregnant with my child and set to marry me would be you!"His shameless logic almost made me laugh indignantly. I said coldly, "Matthew, I've only gone on a blind date with you once. I've only met you a few times. Is it appropriate to say all this now?" "I..." He was made speechless."An

That painting was one of my proudest artworks. I thought no one else would remember it except me. Unexpectedly, Blaze still remembered it after so many years had passed. I felt a gentle tingle in the bottom of my heart."I..." I opened my mouth but did not know what to say."Do you want to apply for a postgraduate program at an art academy?" he asked."Yeah.""You can contact me if you need help. I majored in design in college. Maybe I can give you some advice."Looking at his well-defined profile, I felt a myriad of emotions in my heart. My life had revolved around Matthew in my past life. I regarded him as my whole world, so I did not know that there were people in places I could not see who remembered my ambition."Okay." I nodded vigorously. This time, I would not let myself down again.Blaze sent me home. After I got out of the car, he rolled down the window. "I'll have my assistant contact you about the studio tomorrow.""Sorry to trouble you."He looked at me solemnly.

The man glanced at the ward. His brows were slightly furrowed before his gaze finally fell on me. "Jamie?"I paused. I knew him. He was Blaze Stanton, my former classmate. He was a well-known figure in our high school. However, he came from a wealthy family and was rebellious. He almost had nothing to do with a well-behaved and good student like me.What was he doing here?Blaze ignored the rest and walked straight up to me, handing me a document. "Here's the information you want. Also, I heard you're looking for a studio. I have a friend who's renting out his place in the southern part of the city. The environment is nice. I can help you get in touch if you need it."His appearance instantly broke the oppressive atmosphere in the ward.Matthew looked at Blaze and then at me, his eyes brimming with caution." You... know each other?"Before I could reply, Blaze glanced icily at him. "What's it to you?"He turned back to me, his tone softening. "It stinks in here. Let's go. I'll t
