Chapter 1

Winona Lambert looked at me, tears still in her eyes. Her lips trembled. "Mr. Fuller, you're really going to hire me?"

Dave Kingston, the vice principal, was even more excited than she was. He put his pen down as he spoke in a hoarse voice, "Of course! You're someone who has endured so much pain and still wants to come back to school to protect students. Someone with a heart like yours is so rare these days."

Caden Wagner nodded. "That's right. Her mother went through so much back then, and she still chooses to become a teacher. If that's not true compassion, then what is?"

My stomach turned when I heard the word "compassion".

38 years ago, they said the same thing about Lena Lambert. She cried that her life had been ruined. They all believed her.

My father, Brendan Fuller, said he was innocent. They said he was lying. My mother, Lucy Murphy, begged them to wait for the investigation. They said she was covering for him.

I was so young back then that all I remember was Dad standing in the middle of the crowd, his face white as he kept saying he was innocent.

But everyone ignored him.

I glanced at Winona's résumé. Lena's name was listed under family members.

I'd spent the last 38 years seeing that name. It was in old newspapers, in the court records, and even on the newspaper clipping Mom had crumpled in her hand before she died.

I thought I'd go crazy if I ever saw that name again. But now, I simply closed the résumé and slid it back to her. "Report in at the Language Arts Department next Monday. I hope you remember what you said today. Be a good teacher."

Winona immediately stood and thanked me. Her voice trembled, and her eyes were sincere. "Thank you, Mr. Fuller! I won't let you down."

If I hadn't seen that slight smile when she lowered her head, I might have believed her.

Winona didn't leave right away. Standing outside the gates of Westbrook High, she found a good angle and opened her phone. Her eyes were red on camera, the school's name in gold letters behind her.

"Guys, I did it. I finally walked into the place where my mom was hurt all these years ago. I don't want revenge. I just want to make this place better for my mom and for more kids." Winona's voice broke at the end.

I watched the comments roll in.

"You're so brave."

"The victim's daughter becomes a teacher. This is the best revenge."

"Now that's what we call a true heroine."

Winona was good at crying on camera too, and she looked so much like Lena sitting in front of the cameras back then.

I went to the desk and opened the bottom drawer. There were only three things inside.

An old teacher ID card, a yellowed newspaper, and an old envelope with a worn-out cover, containing the evidence I'd collected over 38 years. Evidence that Lena had faked the whole thing back then.

Dad was wearing a white shirt, smiling innocently in the teacher ID photo, but the brutal headline read, "Monster Teacher Exposed by Poor Girl."

When the orientation ended, a young girl with ponytails and bright eyes came over to me."Sir, that teacher you were just talking about… Was it Mr. Fuller from the school museum?"I nodded. She thought about it and said, "I want to be a teacher like him."I paused for a moment. Then, I smiled. "Alright, remember this. Being like him isn't just about being kind. You have to be brave and clear-headed. When everyone else is out for blood, you have to be brave enough to ask for proof."The girl nodded solemnly. "I will." Then, she rejoined the rest of her classmates.I stood there and stared after her. I suddenly felt that what Dad left behind had never died. It had just been buried under the dust for all these years. Now, the dust had been cleared away, and people could see the light again.…I went to my parents' graves after that. This time, there was no rain, and the sky was blue. I brought flowers and a new photo showing students standing reverently in front of Dad's displa

The last thing I wanted was for anyone to turn Mom's pain into clickbait too. So, I gave just one interview, strictly for the school district. The host asked, "Mr. Fuller, do you still hate Lena?"I thought about it for a long time. "Yes."The host paused. I guessed she didn't expect me to be so blunt."I'm not going to pretend like I forgave her. She caused my parents' death. I hate her, and I think that's normal.""But I'm not going to let the hatred run my life. My dad was a teacher, and so am I. We don't pass down hatred. We teach the truth, rules, and our boundaries."My interview got everyone talking. Some thought I came off too strong, but others said I finally sounded like a principal.I didn't respond to any of them.I just went to work as usual. I went to my meetings and made my rounds.Sometimes, when I passed tenth Grade, Class 3, I'd still think of the phone stand Winona used to prop up on the desk. But the class now had a new teacher, and the morning reading st

Sunlight fell on the kids as they ran around, loud and full of life. They didn't need cameras following them around, and they didn't need to put on some image for anyone. It hit me then.I'd spent all these years hating Lena, the people who stayed silent, and the ones who stood by and judged without even knowing the truth. But destroying any of them was never what I wanted most.I wanted to keep what Dad believed in alive and finish what he'd started. He'd always believed school should be a good place, where teachers looked out for their students. Even when the truth took years to come out, he still believed someone had to wait for it.He died believing in all of that. I was still here. I wanted to prove he was right.…Six months later, the school redid its history museum. An old display board had been sitting in the corner. It read, "Professional conduct matters. Everyone should learn from past mistakes."There was no name underneath, but every veteran teacher knew exactly wh

"Dad, they said you were innocent." My voice was quiet. "It came too late, but at least they finally said it."The rain came down harder. I kept my head down, my tears mixing with the downpour. I thought I'd break down crying, but I didn't.I just sat there, as if I'd finally gone back to when I was seven years old—back beneath the school building, back in Mom's cold arms, and back to those days when everyone was calling us names. Then, I told that little kid I used to be, "See? We didn't wait all those years for nothing."…Lena's public appearance was outside the courthouse. She had a mask on, her hair was a mess, and for once, there were no assistants or fans around her. There were no cameras flashing, either.Reporters kept shouting questions at her."Do you admit you lied about Mr. Fuller?""Are you going to apologize to his family?""Are you going to pay back the money you made from your sob story?"Lena kept her head down. She didn't answer."Ms. Lambert, do you regre

When the news broke that Winona's account had been banned, her followers were still arguing in the comments. Some people pitied Winona, while some said she had only been lied to by Lena. Some even said that it was because of the trauma she'd suffered as a child that led her to frame me.I couldn't believe the comments. There were always people willing to find an excuse for someone else's cruelty because admitting they'd backed the wrong side was hard. So instead of apologizing, they'd rather say, "She has a hard life."But what about the people she pushed into the abyss? Did they have it easy?A week later, Winona had someone send me a letter in a thin envelope, with her messy handwriting all over it.She said she'd grown up hearing about some monster of a teacher who had ruined Lena's life, how Lena had pulled herself out of that mess, and how the Fuller family owed them both. And that was why Winona hated me, Westbrook High, and Sue.Winona had thought that as long as she stoo

"I didn't win," I said.Lena's eyes flickered, as if I had hit a nerve. Then, she smiled again. "So what? They're all dead. I've enjoyed 38 years of success. Jeremy, even if you prove his innocence today, your dad is still dead."She looked at me with pure malice. "You guys still lost."I didn't get angry. I just stared at her. "You're wrong. Dead people can't come back, but the living can clear their names for them. Lena, the good days you stole are over."Lena's smile faded. The police took her away, closing the door behind them.Everything went quiet. An exhaustion suddenly overwhelmed me. It wasn't physical tiredness. I'd been carrying this for 38 years. Now, it was finally over.Sue walked over to me, her eyes red. "Jeremy, if my dad were still here, he would be so happy."I turned to her. "Mr. Brooke did more than enough back then."She shook her head. "He still thinks it wasn't enough. He said that if he'd pushed a little harder or been a little more persistent, Mr. Ful
