Chapter 2 Cruel Fiance

Author: Sixteen Strokes
"She can leave if she wants to. If she doesn't keep that attitude in check, life's going to be a lot harder than she wants it to be." Zach swung his hand dismissively and started helping Daisy try on the gown.

That man had forgotten that I was supposed to be his wife.

"It's not her fault, Zach. She's been really busy with the wedding. She didn't mean to throw a tantrum. And it's pouring out there. What if she gets drenched?"

Daisy pretended to care for me, but she didn't stop changing into the gown at all.

The rain was quickly turning into a downpour. Zach knew I hitched a ride in his car on the way here.

I couldn't get back to the countryside myself, but he still had the gall to say, "And that'll be a good lesson. I've spoiled her more than I should. She should know her place. She should never get jealous of you."

That was it. Those words slashed through any hesitance I had, and I ran headfirst into the rain.

Daisy posted a new story 15 minutes later. The caption read, "Another ride in Rolls-Royce Wraith. I really wanted to stand in the rain, but c'est la vie."

I recognized that car's interior.

The old me used to think that I should be happy that my boyfriend and best friend were getting along swimmingly. When I caught them flirting for the first time, I held my tongue. They took it as a sign to go further, and things kept getting worse from that point on.

I left no reaction or comment on that story.

I walked in the heavy rain for nearly an hour before I got home. My clothes were drenched, and I was freezing, but before I could even change, Zach texted me.

"Why aren't you at the restaurant? God, you're taking your time. Daisy and I are going ahead without you."

That reminded me. We promised to have a meal at an upscale restaurant after testing out that gown.

"Come on already. You always make us wait," he grumbled.

This wasn't the first time it'd happen. Daisy would always hitch a ride in his car whenever we made plans to have lunch or dinner, so they'd arrive before me.

I would have to set off alone from miles away, from where I worked. When I finally got there, the food was already half finished. Every time I tried to tell him he was being unfair, all I got in return was indifference.

"Of course, we started without you. Daisy's stomach isn't exactly the best. Keep giving me that attitude, and there won't even be leftovers next time."

The old me would've wept in silence and licked my wounds if she'd seen that message. This time, I turned my phone off without giving him a reply.

This wedding could go on without me. Daisy wanted to steal my fiancé? Well, I was going to give her that chance.

Midnight had come, but Zach wasn't home yet. I was curled up on the bed and wrapped myself in three layers of comforter. Yet, I still found myself shivering.

I tried to hold on, but I couldn't. Eventually, I called him, saying raspily, "Get me some flu remedy."

He stayed silent for a moment, then he answered coldly, "If you're strong enough to call, then you're strong enough to tough it out. I know what you're up to. I'm not falling for your lies and going home."

I heard music blaring and screeching on the other side, and there was a party going on in the background. Daisy snatched the phone away. She was tipsy as she babbled happily, "It's alright. He's with me. I'll keep an eye on him. He's not going to flirt with any other girl!"

She even sent me a photo as if she thought I wouldn't believe her. The audacity of her to send that picture, even after there was an obvious lipstick mark on Zach's lips, nearly made me turn violent.

"I've already sealed him. You can check his mark when he gets home. I went all out just for you. You're not mad, are you?"

I laughed at myself and shook my head. "I'm not." I ended the call and pushed myself up from the bed with all my might. Once my head stopped spinning, I started packing my stuff up.

Once I was done folding my final shirt, my mentor's text came. It was curt. "Sure, but you'd best be quick."

I booked a flight ticket immediately.

I stared at the wilting roses and froze in my tracks. I only came back to pick up something at my lab, so I didn't expect to see Zach standing there. He stared at me and rubbed his eyes. Then, he charged ahead and hugged my cold, cold self. What came out of his mouth next was close to gibberish."I'm sorry, Queenie. I've got it. It's all Daisy. She misled me. I'm sorry. Let's start over, please. I'll do anything you say."His words sounded so genuine, so earnest, so real, and came far too late. After everything, his tears elicited no emotion from me."How many times do I have to tell you, we are done—"He fell to the ground before I could finish. It seemed that starving himself for two days in the middle of winter finally knocked him out cold once the tension left his body.I only froze for a moment before calling an ambulance."Low blood sugar and poor mood. He's had an IV injection. A bit of sleep should patch him right up," said the nurse calmly.I nodded, paid the bill, and

"You…" Zach blurted and put on a look that made me look like I was the cheater who had broken his heart.I grabbed the hem of Leslie's shirt and said calmly, "We're done, Zach. You have no say over how I live or who I date."Zach started shaking violently, as if he was trying desperately to hold something dark inside him from escaping.I didn't spare him another glance. Instead, I turned around and left the roof. It wasn't until I was a distance away that I realized I was quaking in my boots.Fortunately, Leslie was with me. Perhaps he sensed my discomfort as he spoke with faux trepidation. "Pulling someone's hem is considered flirting in Brundela, Queenie. You have to make me your official partner."I shot him a look that said, "Are you being serious right now?"He nodded earnestly, his eyes wide and innocent."Fuck off." I tapped his head with my phone. "You guys say hi with a kiss to the lips. Tugging on someone's hem isn't even close to what the locals here would consider in

  • Never Your First Choice   Chapter 7 Obstinate Man

Zach was staring at the latest text message he received. "I have a life of my own now. Don't harass me."His ears buzzed. That was when he was reminded of Daisy's words, specifically what she said to keep him from coming. "Think about it, Zach. There's a reason she went to Brundela. There's someone there."He picked up his phone with trembling hands and called one of his friends, who was studying in Brundela. "Find out who this guy is." His voice was already shaking by the end of that sentence. He couldn't believe I had found a new guy that quickly. When his friend came back with the answer he was looking for, Zach traveled to Werechester without missing a beat.Werechester was having long nights due to the season, but he waited outside Werechester University's biology institute anyway. It was early in the morning by the time someone found him, and he was nearly frozen stiff. When he opened his eyes, the first thing he called for wasn't help. Instead, he was calling the name he'

  • Never Your First Choice   Chapter 6 New Life

I became the owner of my own life after I flew to Brundela. The old me used to set all my own affairs aside to work around Zach's schedule.I stopped doing my nails or lashes because he told me he preferred the natural look. I stopped my biological research because I was always in a hurry to go home and cook for him.I had to decline all the gatherings, training, and every other me-related activity just for him. Now, I have decided to choose who I used to be.When I was at the institute, my professor teased, "My institute's a busy place. Overtime usually stretches till after 10 p.m. No one's in a hurry to go home to cook for their boyfriends, are they?"No one spoke, but their eyes all landed on me. My face went red as I quietly shook my head. "I don't have a boyfriend anymore."My professor looked at me, surprised. Then, she nodded approvingly. "Men who can't lead women to better places are deadweight. It's always better to cut off the rot."Then, she waved at someone in the bac

The barrage of bad news hit him harder and harder, until disbelief was the least of his worries. Zach couldn't believe I'd really moved out and left him at the altar. It was inconceivable I'd ever do this to him.An inexplicable sense of panic started to slither up his heart. He scrambled to fish his phone out and called me, but all he found were beeps. He tried texting, but I never responded.Zach grabbed his assistant by the collar. Then, he demanded, his eyes wild, "What do you mean, she left me at the altar? Where did she go?"The assistant had horror etched on his face. He answered carefully, "Brundela, but that's as much as we could find. We don't know the specifics."His voice went quieter and quieter, but Zach's fury only intensified the softer he got.A ding came from the elevator, and out came Daisy in that gorgeous dress meant for a bridesmaid. She quickly walked up to Zach's side."Is she still throwing a tantrum? Want me to talk to her?" She put on the mask of an und

I was already at the international airport two hours later. I was going to step into the boarding area when Zach's mother texted me."Is it okay if we meet up for a meal, Queenie?"I typed and deleted my text over and over. It took me a long moment of hesitation, but I agreed to her request. The marriage's cancellation was already set in stone. Our parents deserved to know. After all, his mother was always cordial with me when we were dating. Then, I came to the room and realized this meal was a trap lying in wait. Zach had his arm around Daisy, and they took up the main spot. I was delegated to the spot where my job was to pass them the salt."Queenie, you made it!" Melinda got up from her seat to welcome me, but her son scoffed derisively."You worry too much, Mom. Told you she'd never leave me. She loves me too much. You didn't have to set up this apology meal."Melinda coughed, and she looked awkward. Zach pretended not to notice that. He picked up the menu and tossed it ove
