Chapter 3 Unpleasant Meeting

Author: Sixteen Strokes
My mind was groggy, and I fell asleep only to wake up and then sleep again. When I finally thought a long stretch of sleep was upon me, a thunderous roar jolted me awake.

"What is the meaning of this, Queenie?" Zach yanked me out of bed and dragged me to the living room.

He jabbed a finger at my suitcase and demanded, "Why'd you pack up? Where are you going? The wedding's next week! How long are you dragging this out?"

I fell silent before answering, "You know what? This is pointless. Let's break up, Zach."

He didn't seem to have heard me.

His voice held fury underneath as he spoke. "Daisy knew you wanted to dine at that restaurant. When you didn't show up, she packed a portion of the food to go! You faked a cold and packed your stuff. Are you trying to make me pile up on the wedding gifts?"

I frowned. "Are you mad, Zach?"

"It's the truth." Zach shot me an indifferent look. "Daisy told me your family wanted 880 grand, and she had to negotiate hard for you guys to drop it to 80 grand. I might be rich, but I'm not a pig for you to slaughter."

My lips twitched, and my body trembled with rage. "You thought I was in this for money? All the gifts you've bought me are cheaper than a pair of shoes you bought Daisy, and it's their value combined! I didn't even leave you when you insulted me that far.

"Yet, you thought I was after your money?"

He turned away and snapped coldly, "Sure, you don't care about the money. Listen to yourself! Three out of your four previous sentences are all about money."

I laughed mirthlessly. It was my fault for loving Zach too deeply, and that gave him the chance to hurt me again and again.

"Enough, Zach. We're through."

I picked up my suitcase and strode off. I wasn't sure if he'd heard me talking about breaking up or if he only thought that was another part of my tantrum.

The answer didn't matter. I couldn't care less about him.

One afternoon, I was in a department store, buying stuff to send to Brundela. When I turned the corner, I ran into two familiar faces.

Zach was pushing a shopping cart, while Daisy was right by him. Panic overwhelmed me, and I knocked over a soap tower. The soaps crashed and tumbled right onto the ground.

Zach and Daisy turned to the commotion, their smiles freezing on their faces when they saw me.

"It's not what you think, Queenie. He wanted me to help him buy some stuff for the wedding," Daisy blurted frantically. At the same time, she showed me the gifts and decor in the shopping cart.

Zach pulled her away. "Don't waste your time explaining. She's petty enough to drag this whole thing out over one gown."

He put his arm around Daisy's shoulder and strode over to the cashier.

As I watched them leave, something in my heart tore open and left a hole behind.

I used to beg Zach to set some time aside for a shopping session with me, but he would always refuse, citing exhaustion or shopping being a hassle.

When we were preparing for the wedding, I told him everything that would be needed right down to the last detail, but all he said was "I'm not interested in doing any preparation."

Now, he was taking Daisy out to do the very thing he wasn't interested in.

When I left the store, I saw Zach had already filled the trunk with the stuff they had bought, just like how a caring boyfriend would. Daisy went into the passenger seat like it was her God-given right. She rolled down the window and waved at me.

"Get in. We'll give you a ride."

I didn't move.

She feigned ignorance for a while before acting like realization just hit her. "Oh, you're upset I took up the passenger seat? Sorry, I always get carsick. Besides, I'm used to sitting here that I didn't realize."

She tried to unbuckle herself, but Zach stopped her. "If she doesn't want to get in, that's her problem. Don't spoil her."

He revved the car up and drove off into the distance, leaving nothing but a cloud of exhaust smoke blowing raspberries in my face.

I stared at the wilting roses and froze in my tracks. I only came back to pick up something at my lab, so I didn't expect to see Zach standing there. He stared at me and rubbed his eyes. Then, he charged ahead and hugged my cold, cold self. What came out of his mouth next was close to gibberish."I'm sorry, Queenie. I've got it. It's all Daisy. She misled me. I'm sorry. Let's start over, please. I'll do anything you say."His words sounded so genuine, so earnest, so real, and came far too late. After everything, his tears elicited no emotion from me."How many times do I have to tell you, we are done—"He fell to the ground before I could finish. It seemed that starving himself for two days in the middle of winter finally knocked him out cold once the tension left his body.I only froze for a moment before calling an ambulance."Low blood sugar and poor mood. He's had an IV injection. A bit of sleep should patch him right up," said the nurse calmly.I nodded, paid the bill, and

"You…" Zach blurted and put on a look that made me look like I was the cheater who had broken his heart.I grabbed the hem of Leslie's shirt and said calmly, "We're done, Zach. You have no say over how I live or who I date."Zach started shaking violently, as if he was trying desperately to hold something dark inside him from escaping.I didn't spare him another glance. Instead, I turned around and left the roof. It wasn't until I was a distance away that I realized I was quaking in my boots.Fortunately, Leslie was with me. Perhaps he sensed my discomfort as he spoke with faux trepidation. "Pulling someone's hem is considered flirting in Brundela, Queenie. You have to make me your official partner."I shot him a look that said, "Are you being serious right now?"He nodded earnestly, his eyes wide and innocent."Fuck off." I tapped his head with my phone. "You guys say hi with a kiss to the lips. Tugging on someone's hem isn't even close to what the locals here would consider in

Zach was staring at the latest text message he received. "I have a life of my own now. Don't harass me."His ears buzzed. That was when he was reminded of Daisy's words, specifically what she said to keep him from coming. "Think about it, Zach. There's a reason she went to Brundela. There's someone there."He picked up his phone with trembling hands and called one of his friends, who was studying in Brundela. "Find out who this guy is." His voice was already shaking by the end of that sentence. He couldn't believe I had found a new guy that quickly. When his friend came back with the answer he was looking for, Zach traveled to Werechester without missing a beat.Werechester was having long nights due to the season, but he waited outside Werechester University's biology institute anyway. It was early in the morning by the time someone found him, and he was nearly frozen stiff. When he opened his eyes, the first thing he called for wasn't help. Instead, he was calling the name he'

  • Never Your First Choice   Chapter 6 New Life

I became the owner of my own life after I flew to Brundela. The old me used to set all my own affairs aside to work around Zach's schedule.I stopped doing my nails or lashes because he told me he preferred the natural look. I stopped my biological research because I was always in a hurry to go home and cook for him.I had to decline all the gatherings, training, and every other me-related activity just for him. Now, I have decided to choose who I used to be.When I was at the institute, my professor teased, "My institute's a busy place. Overtime usually stretches till after 10 p.m. No one's in a hurry to go home to cook for their boyfriends, are they?"No one spoke, but their eyes all landed on me. My face went red as I quietly shook my head. "I don't have a boyfriend anymore."My professor looked at me, surprised. Then, she nodded approvingly. "Men who can't lead women to better places are deadweight. It's always better to cut off the rot."Then, she waved at someone in the bac

The barrage of bad news hit him harder and harder, until disbelief was the least of his worries. Zach couldn't believe I'd really moved out and left him at the altar. It was inconceivable I'd ever do this to him.An inexplicable sense of panic started to slither up his heart. He scrambled to fish his phone out and called me, but all he found were beeps. He tried texting, but I never responded.Zach grabbed his assistant by the collar. Then, he demanded, his eyes wild, "What do you mean, she left me at the altar? Where did she go?"The assistant had horror etched on his face. He answered carefully, "Brundela, but that's as much as we could find. We don't know the specifics."His voice went quieter and quieter, but Zach's fury only intensified the softer he got.A ding came from the elevator, and out came Daisy in that gorgeous dress meant for a bridesmaid. She quickly walked up to Zach's side."Is she still throwing a tantrum? Want me to talk to her?" She put on the mask of an und

I was already at the international airport two hours later. I was going to step into the boarding area when Zach's mother texted me."Is it okay if we meet up for a meal, Queenie?"I typed and deleted my text over and over. It took me a long moment of hesitation, but I agreed to her request. The marriage's cancellation was already set in stone. Our parents deserved to know. After all, his mother was always cordial with me when we were dating. Then, I came to the room and realized this meal was a trap lying in wait. Zach had his arm around Daisy, and they took up the main spot. I was delegated to the spot where my job was to pass them the salt."Queenie, you made it!" Melinda got up from her seat to welcome me, but her son scoffed derisively."You worry too much, Mom. Told you she'd never leave me. She loves me too much. You didn't have to set up this apology meal."Melinda coughed, and she looked awkward. Zach pretended not to notice that. He picked up the menu and tossed it ove
